I use Goodreads and occasionally enjoy what purports to be editorial content from the site itself: for example, this list of anticipated 2017 books, monthly round-ups of notable new releases in various genres, newsletters, year-end best-ofs, etc. None of this stuff is expressly labeled as advertorial, but given the Amazon-owned site's obviously extensive relationships with publishers and sellers, I feel like a lot of it might in fact be "sponsored content," and I'm curious to what extent I'm being marketed-to. Does anyone know?
I'm currently paying Amazon money each year to host my own music, and it's ok, but the upload/macOS client is consistently flaky. Does anyone here use a different service for hosting music that they already own, and love it? What is it? I have a DropBox account with enough capacity, but I'm not aware of any great clients tailored for music playing. I'd like to not host my own out of a home NAS--that is not an option. Clients must run on iOS and macOS.
I have a subscription to Amazon Prime and would like to try out Amazon Prime Reading. How do I search for specific books I want to read? [more inside]
Recently I resolved to look for alternatives to Amazon when possible--especially local or independent shops. I also started upping my donations to progressive causes. Now, let's say someone on my gift list wants a book. I can buy it from a local bookstore for the $28 list price, or I can order it from Amazon for $18 and donate the $10 savings to charity. Which has more impact? [more inside]
I'm going to be alone tomorrow, Thanksgiving. I'm already dealing with enough personal and family losses that all happened right on top of each other in the last few months that it hurts to breathe some hours right now. Give me your best suggestions for compelling, bingeworthy stories on screens to push through the hours (or other suggestions for getting through a first holiday while grieving and not able to be present with family and friends who know what's up). I live in Chicago. When I buy something from Amazon (as in "ships from and sold by Amazon.com"), the checkout process and confirmation email show me an estimated sales tax of 10.25% (the sales tax rate for the state + county + city). The final tax actually charged, however, is the correct state-only tax of 6.25%. My question is why Amazon ever has to estimate. [more inside]
Is there anything out there that advises, for a show you would type in, what the average wait between airdate and it showing up on a particular legal streaming service is? [more inside]
I ordered speakers from a 3rd party seller on Amazon (Discount Music) and when they arrived the serial numbers had been cut out of the boxes. This sketches me out. Why would someone do this and, given that the items are now out of stock and more expensive, how should I proceed? [more inside]
Looking for any good recommendations on Amazon Prime for bed sheets. I just spent my entire lunch break looking and I feel overwhelmed with fake reviews in a hugely oversaturated market. [more inside]
I'm trying to help out a friend who recently lost all his books. His personal situation is such that he would benefit from a Kindle or other ebook reader, but there are complications including not having a credit card. [more inside]
I want to send some small, low-value items to some people all over the U.S. and world. Many of them would prefer to not just give me their address. So I need a middleman: someone that will take their addresses and ship the items for me without me ever knowing their addresses. I'm not trying to start a store to make money off of this. I just want to do something simple and nice on a limited basis. [more inside]
I'm interested in becoming an Amazon merchant that uses order fulfillment processing by Amazon, but I have some questions about how to make it profitable. [more inside]
Ordered on amazon wasn't charged? I contacted amazon chat and synchrony chat. Now they want me to call. I'm too damn lazy to waste time on the phone to correct their mistake. What's the worst that can happen? Order was only 39.75
I'm in the UK and I have a US Mechanical Turk account (I'm not completely sure how this happened or if it's allowed -- Amazon sent me an email inviting me to sign up so I did and it worked). Now I have $15 in gift card credit on Amazon.com but there doesn't seem to be any way to get it into my UK account. [more inside]
AMZN was going along fine, close to an all time high on Amazon Prime Day today, when it suddenly dropped 1.5%, accompanied by huge volume. Didn't see the same drop in other stocks, so something Amazon related must have happened. Just curious. The market always responds more quickly than the news outlets, but maybe investors or brokers have heard something.
A friend of mine and I would like to self-publish a book together on Amazon. How do we split the royalties when Amazon only allows one payee and how do we deal with the tax implications? Added complication: one of us is the U.S., the other is in Canada. [more inside]
I'm using Amazon Streaming for the first time, and it crashes my Windows 7 PC. Whats up? [more inside]
I would love to upload a video to Amazon's Direct Video service [more inside]
Considering downgrading my internet from 100 mbps down to 50 mbps. Will that affect how well video streams? [more inside]
According to some internet searching, a book I have in my possession is worth a few hundred dollars. I'm wondering what the best way to go about selling it is, given that my Ebay and Amazon seller accounts haven't been the most active.
Bonus points for diet-friendly but all snacks welcome. [more inside]
My friend is expecting her first baby soon (yay!) and I would love to get her and her husband an Amazon Mom account! How does that work? Is that the same thing as gifting an Amazon Prime account? Possibly relevant: we are in Canada. [more inside]
There's a company on Amazon charging $2,004 to ship a plastic water bottle. Is this a new scam? If so, how does it work? Is there more of this? [more inside]
I like watching documentaries, but most of them have agonizingly slow narration - is there a way (bonus points for doing so on a Roku) to speed up Amazon Prime or Netflix films? [more inside]
Hi, I'm a voracious reader in the midst of a 30-day trial for Kindle Unlimited (I'm thinking it probably isn't a keeper). It seems like lots of the books available are from self-published or otherwise obscure authors and don't have many reviews. Has anyone come across an obscure book on Kindle Unlimited that they'd recommend? I'm pretty genre agnostic (I'd rather read a good romance novel than a bad science fiction novel), though I'm not generally interested in urban fantasy.
I work for an import agency. I'd like to sell electronic and textile products to Amazon. Any idea how to contact a corporate buyer?
I feel silly, but I can't seem to find an answer to this. I'm currently in a free trial for Prime for another week or so. We were probably going to cancel it, but there is a weekend offer that knocks a few bucks off the price and I'm reconsidering. However, as I'm already in the free trial, is there any way to get the lower price?
Looking for the most reliable and easy to use automatic photo/video backup solution for iPhone. Contenders include Dropbox, Amazon, Flickr, icloud, Google, and probably others. We take tons of photos of the kidlet, and want to ensure they're backed up somewhere between syncing to the computer. Bonus points for a solution that can easily be imported to iPhoto for wife and Lightroom for me. [more inside]
I was listening to the Question of the Day podcast and heard them plugging their Amazon affiliate url: earwolf.com/amazon which redirects to a surprisingly short Amazon url... Did I miss that short Amazon url when I signed up as an affiliate? Does metafilter have a short amazon affiliate URL? Is it just amazon.com/?tag=metafilter-20 ...?
I am thinking about migrating my websites from a VPS server to Amazon's EC2 t2.small. I find the whole process a bit daunting and am looking for a good place to ask questions. Do you have any recommendations? [more inside]
I was given an Amazon Echo for Christmas. I'm trying to decide whether it makes sense to keep it or return it (for something as-yet-undetermined). Those of you with Echos: what am I missing? Is there some great application of it that I don't yet realize? [more inside]
I'm looking for a $0 - $100 or so techy gift for a friend. Amazon links are fabulous. Something you would give to someone that would make them say "Ooooh!" If there is something you got for Christmas that you give rave reviews, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!
Help me think about the best way to manage my kid's new Kindle that he was gifted for the holidays? [more inside]
Is there a way to find out if Amazon Prime is paying off for me? [more inside]
I ordered a textbook on Amazon from a non-Prime seller (none of the Prime sellers had it in stock) and specified "expedited" shipping. The seller provided a USPS tracking number, but the estimated shipping time is longer than I had expected. Is there any way to ensure that this package was shipped via Priority Mail?
My dear friend across the country is going through a difficult time, and I want to materialize on her doorstep a giant pile of components she can swiftly -- and I mean swiftly -- turn into dinner for herself and her eight-year-old. I'm thinking of good ramen-y things, canned fish, and more stuff I can get on Amazon (or similar) for her, and I'd love your suggestions. [more inside]
Hello, I am a newer reseller, I am looking to cut out my middle man. I also want to be the first to look at the returns. Right now, I go through a company that I believe goes through stuff before they box it up to resell from Amazon. [more inside]
I purchased a TV show from Amazon Video and paid extra for "HD" but the quality is awful. It looks like a web video circa 2009. Is there anything I can do to improve the quality? [more inside]

I looked at the previous questions about Amazon.com not loading and have tried everything I can think of to try and get it to work. I have flushed my dns cache, deleted my browsing history and cookies, disabled prefetching, and even restarted my router. I even made sure I was using the most up to date chrome. What gives? I am fairly competent with computers, but might need things spelled out for me. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!!
Product reviews on Amazon reviews have been very helpful in choosing and researching options for everything from fish oil supplements for dogs to baby swaddles to windshield wiper blades. It's always been fairly easy to tell obviously fake reviews and mentally discount those from the bigger picture, or see the extreme highs and extreme lows offering a certain kind of perspective that may or may not apply to my own decisions. The Vine program was a bit annoying at first, but since the reviewers were generally chosen for writing helpful reports, their reviews were often quite helpful and contained information missing from the product descriptions. But recently it seems like there are SO many reviews by non-Vine folks who include a variation on the line, "I received this product at a discount in exchange for my writing a honest review." It is obvious why the manufacturers or distributors want to get more reviews, but does Amazon condone this kind of review? Why have they suddenly been popping up even more? [more inside]
I received a sealed, empty, business-size envelope in the mail from a non-Googleable entity called "Buy3rzParadise" claiming to be located in the Galleria in Atlanta. It had a USPS First-Class Package sticker deliberately stuck onto it (with a tracking number, which says it was sent from Oakland) that says the "package" weighs 4oz. This seems like Amazon/ebay fraud, but I haven't ordered anything from Amazon/ebay that hasn't arrived. I've also only lived at this mailing address for a few months. [more inside]
I'm $1.34 away from qualifying for free shipping. What should I add to my cart? [more inside]
Why are the ads on my Kindle so completely off-base? I'm a BIG Amazon user. I buy tons of products of all sorts, many books, and many, many ebooks. So why does Amazon do such a terrible job of targeting ads to me via my Kindle? [more inside]
What are my options for more ethical alternatives to Amazon? [more inside]
What are your recommendations for strategy games for the Kindle Tablet?
I quit Amazon because all my packages ship via USPS, either directly or FedEx SmartPost. Now I'm looking for online retailers who let me choose UPS or FedEx. Are there any? Also want to avoid SmartPost and its UPS equivalent. (Some merchants tell you a shipment will use FedEx/UPS but you find out after commiting the order that USPS handles the last mile. Right now I'm waiting on a SmartPost package turned over to USPS 150 miles from me and it will take 3 days to get it delivered from there.)
I'd like to stock up my Kindle relatively inexpensively (and am also a little overwhelmed by the phenomenal quantity of cheap public domain books available). What are the best works of literary fiction under $2 available for the Kindle? Preferences/requirements inside. [more inside]
What are the weirdest, strangest, wrongest edible items that I can order RIGHT NOW and have in two days via Amazon Prime? Gummi chicken feet is a good place to start.
After spending a while researching Kindle vs. Kobo, I bought a Kindle Paperwhite. I've only had it for half a day and I'm starting to think I made the wrong choice. Help me figure out whether I should return the Paperwhite, whether I should buy the Kobo Glo, or whether I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely. [more inside]
