Unmarked aluminum MTB handmade by master steel framer?

I've been looking for interesting vintage-ish hardtail mountain bike frames, and found an ad on Craigslist for an aluminum MTB purportedly built by Colin Laing. Laing is known as a master steelworker who traditionally built beautifully-lugged track and road bikes in England and Arizona, so my hackles have been raised. It would certainly be a unique bike were it built by him. Would you be so well-informed as to confirm or deny the plausibility that this is a Neat Bike? [more inside]

Aluminum wiring! Asbestos! Termites! Are they a big deal? What to do?

First-time homebuyers under contract for a 60-year-old house-- how serious/expensive are these problems: aluminum wiring, friable asbestos insulation, termites, undisclosed window leak causing water damage? Along with original plumbing and an old HVAC, is this a pretty standard situation that falls under the umbrella of "all houses are going to have some problems, no house is perfect" and is this the kind of stuff they mean when they say you'll be spending 1%-ish of your home value on this kind of stuff every year? Or are these costs and issues on the high side, and this is probably on top of another 1%-ish every year on other repairs and maintenance? Help us put this in perspective! (We need to decide whether to give the sellers' relocation company the right to cancel our contract by requesting repairs. And we need to figure out what we should fix and how much it'll cost if we go ahead and buy the house without repairs.) [more inside]

Choices on Aluminum attache case

My husband mentioned today he needed to replace his black leather briefcase/attache case with an aluminum one. Of course, with Christmas just around the corner I think this would be a good Christmas present. My question is what is a good brand, best place to buy online price wise and what color would be best as far as black or silver?

Foiled by the cost of aluminum

I've got this aluminum alley door (28" x 70" avec mounting door post), that I don't want. I'm told solid aluminum doors like this are expensive, which made me wonder if I could sell it. Which, because I can't seem to find anything comparable on the net, brings me in turn to my question: what should I ask for it when I post it on Craig's List? And if there's a better way to sell it than Craig's List (such as selling it to a scrap dealer), please enlighten me.

must be something in the water...

This is a question for anyone who knows about houses from the inside out: Do homes ever use aluminum pipes for plumbing? We just had our water tested by the national center for water quality at Heidelberg University using samples from two separate faucets in our home. One sample came back totally normal; the other had double the rate of acceptable aluminum per billion parts. Readings for all other substances were fairly close to each other between the two faucets (and except for the aluminum, no other concern.) Why could one faucet have a higher aluminum rate than another in the same home? [more inside]

anodizing a design

I saw a neat clock the other day on MoCoLoco and I was wondering process is used to get the design printed/dyed on the face. It says that it's anodized, and from my research this seems pretty straightforward, but my question is how is the printing/masking done? Are the dyes added in stages using a photomask? Or is it masked in the anodizing stage? You can see a good example of the colors here [more inside]
