Medical translation filter: I'm off to the Middle East and Europe. Small concern - I have a collection of allergies that would need to be known in an emergency, especially as I'll be in a few remote places. What do I put on a medic alert band in Arabic countries? I want to know how have people with milk allergies and/or lactose intolerance changed their lifestyle in terms of eating out. It seems it should be simple- all you need to know if there is milk in it- but then again, not so much, esp if its not consistent (different brands etc). I am not interested in answers of the kind, "ask the waiter" but I am more interested in knowing how it affected this part of your life. Is it a drain to eat out with people at the new office when they ask you out? Do you turn a date down just because..? How did you accept that you may never be able to enjoy that ice-cream or cheesecake again?? (sigh)

My new roommate has been sneezing since he got here, and I think it may be the dust/dust mites that's bothering him. I suspect the inherited mattress he's using may be harboring them, although it's otherwise perfectly fine. So: recommendations for a good mattress cover that will keep in the allergens, isn't weird and crinkly and won't destroy our tiny budget? (More info and further allergy inquiries behind the cut) [more inside]
I've heard about a woman outside of Boston who cures kids' allergies by starting with an infinitesimal amount of the allergen, and slowly exposing the body to greater amounts, until the allergy is overcome. A similar process was used in a study at Duke recently. Is there anyone else in the USA using this process (successfully) to treat/cure kids' allergies, that you know of?

My dog's really, really itchy, and my vet hasn't been much help. She's got bumps, sores, and the occasional scab on her underside. Allergy treatments haven't been much help (barring prednisone which isn't really a long-term solution) nor have special skin-treatment foods. And she doesn't have parasites, either. I'm kind of at a loss. [more inside]
Can someone tell me the minimum safe level of casein and lactose found in "casein free" &/ or "lactose free" foods that would not trigger an allergic reaction. (In ppm.) i.e. the lowest safe level allowed if you were trying to produce such a food product. (It will be for ghee, which has the milk solids removed, but residual trace amounts could potentially remain.) In striving to get it as low as possible, what would be an acceptable level to not trigger allergic response? [more inside]

Should I be worried about this? I went to the doctor this morning to get checked out for cold/flu symptoms; I didn't think it was serious -- I just wanted to check that I didn't have H1N1, but the doctor told me that the treatment I'd been getting for prostatitis was "highly unusual for someone in their 20s", and he said I should immediately stop taking the antibiotic I'm on (Septra/Bactrim) because I might be having an allergic reaction to it, or possibly an autoimmune reaction.
