Going to Tokyo, allergic to soy. Help me build a list of "safe" dishes!

I'm going to Tokyo in the fall. I'm allergic to soy. It is an allergy triggered by the soy protein, which means that tofu and edamame are not OK but soy sauce is because the protein is denatured. (This is common for people who are allergic to soy - I am no special snowflake.) The easy solution would seem to be to live on yakitori and yakiniku...but I'm also a vegetarian. Difficulty level = 11! [more inside]

Looking for a woman's sports watch with no exposed metal.

My wife would like a sports watch. She doesn't need GPS or fancy gadgetry, just something to wear to the gym. She needs large digital numbers that can be read easily while she's moving, and some timing functions. The problem is that she's allergic to metal, so anything that would touch her skin would have to be leather or plastic--the strap, the buckle, the back of the case, and any buttons on the side. I've looked in sporting goods stores but only found metal on the backs of cases, and that's something that's hard to tell online. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Migraine Doc in Chicago

Hello, I am a long time allergy and asthma sufferer in Chicago. Recently this summer, I have been experiencing major headaches as the weather shifts dramatically. I have an ENT who has been working with me closely, but this is going beyond their area of expertise, as my sinuses, Eustachian, and nasal passages are clear. He thinks the problem/swelling is originating from above my sinus passages. (Sorry for TMI.) [more inside]

Why do I get so congested after I eat?

I'm trying to figure out why I get congested after I eat many types of foods. Often after I finish a meal, I get very congested in my chest 10-15 minutes later, and my throat and chest feel somewhat tight. Not wheezing-I-can't-breathe tight, but tight like how things feel during a panic attack. When this happens I have to cough a lot and clear my throat to get the phlegm out of my chest. Then, after about 15-20 minutes, everything goes away and I feel normal. What's going on? [more inside]

Peanut-allergy friendly travel options from Boston to Detroit?

I need to travel from Boston, MA to Detroit, MI to visit my family this Christmas break. I'm faced with three options - fly, bus, or drive. I have a severe peanut allergy, so I'm trying to choose the safest option for me (with a preference for shorter travel times). In particular, how safe might Greyhound bus and United Airlines be for the peanut-allergic? Fellow allergics, would wearing a surgical mask help? Personal stories welcome. [more inside]

My eyes are going to pop out of my head.... thank you Spring!

Hello fellow Metafilterians, now that allergy season is upon us, does anyone recommend the best OTC med for: pressure on the eyes, chest congestion, stuffy nose, and sore throat? It's much worse in the morning. Coughing up yellow awfulness (sorry, gross). Claritin and Mucinex-D do NOT work. Sudafed works like a charm but knocks me out, literally for 2 days. Not sure what's out there, haven't had allergies in a couple of years.

Allergic to schnapps?

Sometimes when I drink alcohol I get sort of an allergic reaction: skin rash (red spots on my face and shoulders) that feels a bit itchy. The first time that happened was about 2 years ago (never had that before and I'm 29 now) and now it occurs about every tenth (or so) time I drink hard liquor. It hardly ever occurs with beer or wine and it doesn't seem to be related to a certain ingredient (it happens with vodka as well as with Campari). Plus it doesn't seem to be related to the quantity of alcohol ingested. Maybe the cause is a certain kind of food in combination with alcohol? I haven't done enough "tests" to find out more. What could that be and need I be worried?

How to keep the dust in for a better night's sleep

My new roommate has been sneezing since he got here, and I think it may be the dust/dust mites that's bothering him. How worried should I be about my symptoms?

Should I be worried about this? I went to the doctor this morning to get checked out for cold/flu symptoms; I didn't think it was serious -- I just wanted to check that I didn't have H1N1, but the doctor told me that the treatment I'd been getting for prostatitis was "highly unusual for someone in their 20s", and he said I should immediately stop taking the antibiotic I'm on (Septra/Bactrim) because I might be having an allergic reaction to it, or possibly an autoimmune reaction.
