Tenant/housemate with a drinking problem

My friend A owns a large house and rents out 3 rooms, while she lives in the 4th room. One of the housemates, D (the brother of one of A's friends), is a nice enough guy, but shortly after he moved in she discovered that he gets drunk every night. She is wondering a) what to do? and b) what steps to take to do it. [more inside]

I guess this problem won't fix itself, and it's time to face that.

My sweet, strong, beloved Momma has become a high-functioning alcoholic in the last few years. All the literature I can find on talking to an alcoholic start with "tired of begging, pleading and fighting with your loved one about their drinking?" Well, no, I'm not, because no one has ever even MENTIONED it to my mother. Where do I/we start? I'm scared. [more inside]

Living with an alcoholic boyfriend

I am in a pickle. My boyfriend is an alcoholic (probably the functioning kind- whatever that is,) and we live together. We have been together for almost two years. I can't stand the drinking anymore, and I have tried nearly every avenue to remedy it within the relationship. The only thing I can think to do now, is move out so that I can distance myself from his alcoholism. [more inside]

Boyfriend's drinking problem has become uncontrollable. Can't deal.

He now drinks every day without fail --when we first met, he only drank every once in awhile but it was something he did to relax. Now in my perspective, it's gotten out of control because we decided to move into a new place where we both are on the lease. All conversations have ended in a screaming match and him telling me I no longer have any power because we share a lease. I don't know if I can continue on like this, what do I do? [more inside]

The Trouble with Answered Prayers

I met someone on a dating site five months ago, who turned out to be alcoholic. Despite all odds, and both of us trying to resist the other because of this--we talked openly about it--we ended up getting involved and slowly got closer and closer. Finally, he stopped drinking, turned to AA, and effectively disappeared, at which point my abandonment issues kicked in. Help me understand what happened to him, and how to soothe myself in the aftermath. Apologies for the wall of text within. [more inside]

Setting healthy boundary with my highly functioning alcoholic mom

My mom leaves far away. In another country. I speak everyday with her on the phone for 20 min. She is everyday drunk. I know by her voice. When she drinks and when she doesn't. However, alcohol did not affect her career, money, even she is still married to my dad- although not the best marriage, I still believe they get along well. [more inside]

How do I deal with my alcoholic mom

Hi guys I live in us and my mom in Romania. We talk on the phone quite often- everyday being that I am the only child. But it hurts me so much when I talk to her to know that she drank, or that she is drunk. The way I suspect it is by speech. She is not that fluent, the words come out harder from her mouth. I know her, and I know if she drank just by listening to her speech. Obviously she denies like any addict. This thing kills me because I know it kills her. How do I deal with it? I told her repeatedly that I hate it. I was thinking to stop talking to her. Basically I was thinking that if one night I call and she is drunk then don't call for a week. Hopefully she can link her drinking to me not calling which she freaks out if I don't call. It might not work but at least I keep my sanity because after I see her like that my whole day is ruined.

How to help teen with alcoholic parent

A family friend who is divorced has been an alcoholic for more then several years. She has primary custody of a teenage daughter. We have kept in touch with the alcoholic mom but sporadically due to her behavior. Recently I found out the the daughter was cutting and acting out, I believe due to the stress of living with her mom. Because of this I started texting the daughter just to check in and give her some positive messages (mostly like “hope you have a good day” and “I’m so impressed how you did on that test”). I did ask her if she’d like to go to an alateen meeting which she agreed to but only if I went with her. However we haven’t set a date. [more inside]

AA for atheist

Atheist and alcoholic I need to seek support from AA. Please interpret aspects of the higher power stuff in a way that is not cognitively dissonancing for someone who has no belief in a deity. I know there are other options for "rational" alcoholics but my circumstances and location make AA the best option. Feel free to include scripts and behaviours for me to respectfully avoid participating in group prayer (and hand holding - im really uncomfortable with touching strangers) without drawing excessive notice to myself. I am in Australia which is not overtly religious but the two AA meetings I have been to previously (and will be attending) included a prayer, and people who explicitly said they were not religious but recommended the higher power as crucial in their sobriety.

Cleaning up my alcoholic sister's poo...

Found my sister yesterday in a poo covered apartment. I had her sent to the hospital (which she was released from 2 weeks ago). She was drinking again but now her apt, carpet, floors, mattress and sofa is covered with poo. I just opened the windows and locked the door when they carted her out. It needs to be cleaned up but should SHE do it or hire someone to do it or should I get it cleaned up and/or present her with the bill? Will a regular cleaning service do this or do I need some sort of specialized service? I've talked to some people and arguments for having me clean it up is: someone out of the hospital really doesn't have the strength to deal with this. arguments against is: she needs to see/be responsible for her life and the results. I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?
