For one of the steps to a science project, I need to take a 32oz bottle of drugstore 70% isopropyl alcohol and reduces down to 50% by adding distilled water. Can anyone tell me how many ounces of water I would need to add to the 32oz bottle of isopropyl to make it 50% alcohol? The mathematical formula would be helpful if it's easy enough to calculate in the future. Thank you.

For various reasons, I've never been entirely comfortable with a very common type of social event -- I'd characterize it as meeting in loud spaces in the evening with strangers around alcohol. In college, they were frat parties. In business school, it's been beer blasts. In professional life, it's been bars and happy hours. These social events are so common that I haven't been able to avoid them entirely, and I realize to some extent attending them is important because they're so common -- this is how many people meet mates, job prospects, connections. Is it worth it to force myself to get better at enjoying them, or am I completely justified in avoiding them as much as I can? (personal details follow) [more inside]

Does anybody else find that they consume more alcohol during PMS? More months than not, I drink a lot on what turns out to be the day right before my period starts. (I do realize that this a precarious time to drink and am going to start charting so I have a better idea of when to expect it.) I am curious a) if other women do this, and b) if anybody knows of any possible biological reason for this.

My boyfriend of 8 years just had what looks very much like a manic episode. It involved him doing incredibly stupid, dangerous stuff with alcohol that got him arrested. He's out of jail now, he's in touch with a lawyer... So, the legal stuff is as settled as it can be right now. But now we're dealing with much larger psychological issues, and I am desperate for advice. [more inside]

Four college roommates and I moved into a new house in a sketchy neighborhood, next door neighbor welcomed us with a bottle of alcohol. And another bottle a couple weeks later. I'm on the board of a club in California. Some on the board want to allow alcohol at our events. I'm scared we would be liable if someone gets hurt on the way home after drinking too much. You are not our lawyer but what do you think our liability is? We meet at a business but after hours.
Arakfilter! I've happened across a little bottle of pricey Arak (El Rami, from Lebanon), welcome tips on its consumption. I've seen the suggestions about adding water followed by ice, though I wonder if it's the same with all grades, kinda like how one might not consume cheap and high-end tequila the same way. Thanks... and come by for a glass if you're in Dubai.

I've often heard the claim that vodka is required by law to be "tasteless, odorless, and colorless". Even Alton Brown, who I usually trust on these matters, makes the claim. This claim is often taken to mean that it doesn't matter what brand of vodka you buy - it's all exactly the same (Alton says this as well). How can this possibly be true? Anyone who's ever opened a bottle of vodka knows it has an obvious smell, with words like "paint thinner" describing it. Others will tell you that this just means you're buying cheap vodka, but according to the supposed law, it's all the same! Please help me get set straight. Is there a law or not? [more inside]

I am increasingly finding that I dislike the (emotional) effect alcohol has on me when I have anything more than a single drink, particularly when tired. I also dislike the fact that I have almost a physical need to drink in the evenings (I think "alcoholic" would be being overly melodramatic in my case, but the need is there all the same). Is there any way to get the health benefits of alcohol without the temptation of an open bottle of wine? [more inside]

My partner and I have decided that we would like to learn to drink in moderation, and have already begun to see if it will work for us. But we're not trying to reduce our intake-- we've each abstained from alcohol for over five years and are starting from a place of not drinking at all. Basically, we're un-quitting drinking, and want some guidance. Is there some sort of support or literature that can help us make sure we're on the right track as we learn to have a healthy and casual relationship with alcohol? [more inside]
