I'm the kind of person who gets worried enough they'll do their work not well, or make a mistake, that they end up either not starting or working too slowly and filled with dread. Last week, I had to work late on a project. I had two beers in the process, found I cared less about the anxiety and dread and perfectionism, and just did a better, less stressful job. I want to do this without drinking. [more inside]
I took one 5 mg of valium, once, to help me fall asleep. After a full 24 hours, I drank excessively the next night. How bad is this? [more inside]
I have a sealed bottle straight corn whiskey from McCormick distilling company. The bottle says it was aged 8 years and it has the mark of 1977 on on the bottom. It was kept in a cold basement all this time. Is this still drinkable? What will it taste like?
I thought that, by law, all wine bottles in the US must show their % alcohol content. But recently in California I've bought wine which doesn't display the alcohol content on either the front or back label. Am I just not looking close enough?
I'm looking to establish a therapeutical relationship for standard-ish reasons (ideally, a cognitive behavioral approach to some interpersonal issues) and need to find someone with a nuanced-to-permissive view of substance use. I'm not talking about narcotics, but occasionally I enjoy cannabis and often drink alcohol--neither, I believe, is excessive and certainly never cause health or legal* problems in my life. What surprises me is that I didn't drink too much, I only drank 2 glasses. It was my first time drinking Vodka, so my question is : Is it normal that I threw up and had the spins? Does that mean that I have a very low tolerance for it? I mixed the second glass with some orange juice. Not sure if that's relevant.
I'm pretty tolerant to any substances I've tried; alcohol, cannabis, and prescription medication always needed higher than average doses on me to procure any effects. I also sober up pretty fast. Just out of curiosity, what does this mean? Does my body do something well? Do I just have a healthy liver? [more inside]
Will having a beer (or maybe two) affect the efficacy of a course of methylprednisolone? There were no alcohol warnings on the pharmacy packaging, but of course the Internet says not to combine them, as it says for everything. Thanks! If it matters, this is day 4 of the course.
I have a friend who is a bartender and who has a birthday coming up. I'd like to get her a *really* nice cocktail shaker for home. Something that would make a bartender say "ooooo fancy". Do you have any ideas/thoughts on brands I could look at?
I can idly finish a bottle of wine. How do I not? [more inside]
My parents have found an unopened bottle of Fernet that belonged to my grandfather. This makes it at least 25 years old. Do herb liquors like this get any better or worse with such age? Is it still safe to drink? [more inside]
My partner and I are about spend the next two weeks camping in a fairly remote national park in Tasmania. We are bringing a bottle of gin because we like it and being compact it can come in by boat with our other supplies. We can buy limited other supplies before we leave to mix with it. Other than that we will have access to (possibly rather mediocre) tank water and a decent camp kitchen. So please give us all your creative gin cocktail recipes that can be prepared with limited ingredients in the middle of nowhere. We will toast you as we drink them!
Where is the line between drinking-is-my-hobby and alcoholism? [more inside]
My husband gets a clean bill of health from his doctor every time he goes for a checkup, which makes no sense to me if she knew his habits. He seems to like and respect his doctor, and is inclined to listen to her. I've been considering calling her up and informing her of what she's been missing. Have you ever done this? Have you ever been the doctor on the receiving end of this information? I welcome your thoughts and experience. [more inside]
I don't drink at all and I'm happy that way. What I don't like is the strong aversion I have to other people drinking. Help me understand why people drink and why it needn't be all that evil! :) [more inside]
I recently discovered that the morning after drinking vodka (I'm not getting drunk and this wasn't on an empty stomach), I get mild chest pains. I'm not looking for what to do: obviously I've stopped drinking vodka and will see a doctor ASAP. What I'd like to know is: have you experienced this and did you ever figure out the cause?
I'm looking for a merchant in NYC who sells a good selection of French sparkling hard dry ciders (from Normandy and Brittany). Also great if said merchant has more diverse hard cider options (UK or Scandinavian etc.) [more inside]

Asking for my son, who has confided in me. I am unsure of the best way to proceed, so I am turning to the hivemind. My son needs help in assertively turning down social events that he would not like to attend. Details inside. [more inside]
My wife is very early into her first pregnancy (4/5 weeks). We are very excited and nervous and overjoyed and terrified. We also know it's extremely early, and as such at the moment we aren't telling anyone anything (not even family or close friends), other than her doctor. The issue is that my wife is going on a business trip soon for 4 days, during which time her small group of coworkers (including her boss) will be going out every night for dinner and drinks. My wife is typically a social drinker (glass of wine or a cocktail), and with no typical excuses available like, say, being the designated driver, it will be noticeable with her small group when she's the only one to decline a drink every night. This holiday season I want to make a non-alcoholic eggnog and have some liquor on the side that people can just add to it. The question then is: bourbon, whiskey, rum, brandy...what's the best alcohol for eggnog? [more inside]

I am in an argument with my friend who claims tequila is somehow a stimulant or upper. I think this is ludicrous and all alcohol is a depressant. I am trying to prove her wrong via the internets but all the sources I can find are completely unsubstantiated crap. Is there any reputable source that will settle this preposterous argument?
My hangovers have been getting worse, even though I've been drinking less. It's also taking longer for my hangovers to start. Is this normal? [more inside]

A person from my Past has friended me on fb out of the blue. I haven't seen him in around 15 years. We didn't part on good terms and I've had a lot of regret and shame over the years. He sent me some general messages. Now, should I apologise for the past or leave it alone? Many details below. [more inside]
I have been dating a lovely man for two months. We met online. I'm concerned he may drink too much and would like to talk to him about it. [more inside]
Inspired by this question, I have a Chinese mystery-spirit question of my own. I got this potable years ago at a Ranch 99 Supermarket, and find it pretty interesting, but I'm running out. Does it have a more conventional name than "ng-ka-py", and can I get it here, in the middle of the country? [more inside]
A Chinese colleague gave me a bottle of some kind of alcohol - photo. It's one of the most... err... distinctive things I've ever tasted. What on earth is it? (And are you supposed to drink it neat? Down it or sip it?)

We've got no more than $100 to spend on booze and mixers to bring to Burning Man. At a minimum, this should keep two of us lightly intoxicated for eight days. In a more perfect world, we'll maintain a nice buzz AND have enough to spare that we can share generously with our neighbors. Oh, and we'll have *no* refrigeration or coolers and no fancy mixologist gear. What should we bring? [more inside]
My roommate drinks a half gallon of vodka a week. I know it's a lot but is it so much that I should consider an intervention?

Any Adams family experts in the house? Did Charles Adams (son of John Adams) die of alcohol poisoning, delirium tremens, liver disease, pancreatitis, or other illness merely attributed to his drinking? Basic googling did not pull up any details on his death. My understanding is that in 1800 DTs was not a well described syndrome (in the US or possibly anywhere), but there was some familiarity with other alcohol-related illness.
I'm having some abdominal discomfort that might be related to my alcohol use. But I don't know what to do about it, for reasons related to sleep issues. Long story within. [more inside]
Does more ice in the shaker make the drink colder faster? Is there more or less dilution per second of shaking? in short, is there any reason I would want to have a particular level of ice in a shaker when making martinis?
All other things being equal, does a short person's blood alcohol level reach 0.05 faster than a tall person (because they have less blood and/or a smaller liver)?
I have, over the last year, developed an unusual reaction to alcohol. My GP basically brushed it off and said “oh well, guess you don’t get to drink any more” – but… [more inside]
I know I have a problem drinking. I am a binge drinker that drinks once a month just before my period. Alcoholic Anonymous is the only answer I am getting. It has been helpful in the past, as I had 7 months of sobriety. As a binge drinker one or two nights a month, what do you think I should do, as I have found AA not the exact solution to my problems right now? Let me explain when, how, and why I drink. Please help! [more inside]
My husband drinks too much, and I just attended my first Al-Anon meeting. I have some questions about it. [more inside]
My favorite drink is a Tanqueray and tonic and has been since I was young. In the US, especially as a teenager, people told me that it was a cranky old man drink while marveling at how it glowed under blacklight. I traveled to London once, and a guy there told me that it was a "chick drink". I, of course, don't let what people think of it affect what tasty, tasty alcohol delivery vehicle I choose, but where you are, what's the "reputation" of gin-based drinks? Are they "manly" or "girly"? And how did it gain that reputation? I'm holding a gimlet right now because I've run out of tonic water.
