Help me get sober in a secular, woman-friendly way

I am in my early thirties, and I am finally facing the fact that I have a substantial drinking problem. Like a lot of people, I drink to mute my feelings--I have been through an awful lot of trauma, so even as I work on things there is still more hurt to feel. I am trying to formulate a recovery plan that works within my own idiosyncrasies and values, but I am not sure what is out there. [more inside]

How to best support my partner who wants help w/ shame & addiction?

My partner has been wrestling with alcohol and sexual shame for a long time. This week, he confided in me that he wants to seek help based upon a boundary I set for myself, that he does not want to live like this anymore. I don't want to "over-help" or engage in any co-dependent behavior and I want to be a loving partner in this. But I also need to protect myself and our kids. What can I do or what should I avoid? Specifics inside. [more inside]

How much do you have to drink to get boozy breath or pores?

What's the bare minimum amount of alcohol that will show up on a person's breath and/or body scent? One drink? Enough that they'd be drunk? If someone shows up somewhere with a faint booze scent, is it possible that they had the "one glass of wine" as claimed, or is it a safe bet that it was much more? [more inside]

Finding a substance-friendly therapist?

I'm looking to establish a therapeutical relationship for standard-ish reasons (ideally, a cognitive behavioral approach to some interpersonal issues) and need to find someone with a nuanced-to-permissive view of substance use. I'm not talking about narcotics, but occasionally I enjoy cannabis and often drink alcohol--neither, I believe, is excessive and certainly never cause health or legal* problems in my life. What happens when you try to talk to your spouse's doctor?

My husband gets a clean bill of health from his doctor every time he goes for a checkup, which makes no sense to me if she knew his habits. He seems to like and respect his doctor, and is inclined to listen to her. I've been considering calling her up and informing her of what she's been missing. Have you ever done this? Have you ever been the doctor on the receiving end of this information? I welcome your thoughts and experience. [more inside]

Chest pains after vodka

I recently discovered that the morning after drinking vodka (I'm not getting drunk and this wasn't on an empty stomach), I get mild chest pains. I'm not looking for what to do: obviously I've stopped drinking vodka and will see a doctor ASAP. What I'd like to know is: have you experienced this and did you ever figure out the cause?

How to avoid pregnancy questions on my wife's upcoming business trip?

My wife is very early into her first pregnancy (4/5 weeks). We are very excited and nervous and overjoyed and terrified. We also know it's extremely early, and as such at the moment we aren't telling anyone anything (not even family or close friends), other than her doctor. The issue is that my wife is going on a business trip soon for 4 days, during which time her small group of coworkers (including her boss) will be going out every night for dinner and drinks. My wife is typically a social drinker (glass of wine or a cocktail), and with no typical excuses available like, say, being the designated driver, it will be noticeable with her small group when she's the only one to decline a drink every night. I don't know how to help him or myself

My boyfriend of 8 years just had what looks very much like a manic episode. It involved him doing incredibly stupid, dangerous stuff with alcohol that got him arrested. How to safely un-quit drinking?

My partner and I have decided that we would like to learn to drink in moderation, and have already begun to see if it will work for us. But we're not trying to reduce our intake-- we've each abstained from alcohol for over five years and are starting from a place of not drinking at all. Basically, we're un-quitting drinking, and want some guidance. Is there some sort of support or literature that can help us make sure we're on the right track as we learn to have a healthy and casual relationship with alcohol? [more inside]

Wet House

My cousin is a lifelong alcoholic. Other than staying with friends, he is homeless. He has limited contact with the family and every attempt at sobriety has failed. He has a long history of arrests and jail time, all of which involve alcohol and alcohol-related offenses (shoplifting, public drinking and intoxication, et cetera). I need to find a wet house in either the Los Angeles or Phoenix area. No recommendations for AA or sobriety programs, please. It has been tried and he does not want that help.
