Basically, I've been drinking up to two thirds a bottle of liquor (or equivalent) a night for the past two years. Decided to stop, didn't sleep for five days save nodding off where I had terrific nightmares and just thrashed a lot before waking up again. Now I'm not sure what to do. Looking for advice/anecdotes. I'm in kind of a unique place. [Warning] gory details if you open the can. [more inside]

Last Friday, it became clear that a member of a group that I'm in has drinking behaviours that may be becoming incompatible with being in the group. I can see several ways to proceed, but any advice is welcome - especially if you experienced something similar and tried something that worked. [more inside]

What's the bare minimum amount of alcohol that will show up on a person's breath and/or body scent? One drink? Enough that they'd be drunk? If someone shows up somewhere with a faint booze scent, is it possible that they had the "one glass of wine" as claimed, or is it a safe bet that it was much more? [more inside]

I thought that, by law, all wine bottles in the US must show their % alcohol content. But recently in California I've bought wine which doesn't display the alcohol content on either the front or back label. Am I just not looking close enough?

I am at home visiting family this weekend, I’ll be back at the rented house I share with my boyfriend of 6 years in less than 24 hours. In a phonecall today I heard pretty much the last thing/piece of evidence I need to make me realise that I need him to properly address his problems with alcohol. Or maybe I need him to address my problems with his alcohol behaviour. Please read the extended story inside and tell me how to frame this in my mind and how to talk to him. [more inside]

I'm on the board of a club in California. Some on the board want to allow alcohol at our events. I'm scared we would be liable if someone gets hurt on the way home after drinking too much. You are not our lawyer but what do you think our liability is? We meet at a business but after hours.

I've often heard the claim that vodka is required by law to be "tasteless, odorless, and colorless". Even Alton Brown, who I usually trust on these matters, makes the claim.
This claim is often taken to mean that it doesn't matter what brand of vodka you buy - it's all exactly the same (Alton says this as well). How can this possibly be true? Anyone who's ever opened a bottle of vodka knows it has an obvious smell, with words like "paint thinner" describing it. Others will tell you that this just means you're buying cheap vodka, but according to the supposed law, it's all the same! Please help me get set straight. Is there a law or not? [more inside]

There is only one cocktail that I really, really like. I discovered it by chance at my favorite restaurant, since sadly closed down. I can get people to make it for me but it seems like I always have to explain the recipe three times and I feel there must be a name for it. Unfortunately, I have drawn a blank when visiting cocktail websites. Please help me ID this drink! [more inside]

How can I (or anyone) stop my friend's mother-in-law from sneaking alcohol to my friend's infant daughter?
Alice and Bill have a baby, Clarice. Alice and Bill used to drink heavily, until they had Clarice, who is now about a year and a half old. Bill's parents, Dave and Edna, guzzle wine all day long. When Dave and Edna come to visit Alice, Bill and Clarice at the holidays, Edna's favorite game is to stick her finger in her wine glass and get Clarice to lick the wine off her finger.
Alice hates this, and prevents it when she's around, but she can't be in the room with them every single second. Just this evening, I was holding Clarice when Alice stepped out of the room, and had an awkward stand-off with Edna because I wouldn't let Clarice do it.
Thank you in advance for any practical tips you might have.

YANML: I'm 25 years and 30 days old. I'm at a bar crawl in Pittsburgh. I just got denied entry to a bar on Carson St because my Ohio license is expired by 30 days.
What is the Pennsylvania law for a bar regarding alcohol service for a 25 year old with an expired ID? I.E. how can I avoid getting blocked for the rest of the evening?
Things to consider: Grace period for expired license, possessing multiple credit cards in my name (to verify identity) and obviously over the age of 21 based on physical appearance.

Sometimes when I drink alcohol I get sort of an allergic reaction: skin rash (red spots on my face and shoulders) that feels a bit itchy. The first time that happened was about 2 years ago (never had that before and I'm 29 now) and now it occurs about every tenth (or so) time I drink hard liquor. It hardly ever occurs with beer or wine and it doesn't seem to be related to a certain ingredient (it happens with vodka as well as with Campari). Plus it doesn't seem to be related to the quantity of alcohol ingested. Maybe the cause is a certain kind of food in combination with alcohol? I haven't done enough "tests" to find out more.
What could that be and need I be worried?
