Looking for an antique automobile renter/dealer in Florida panhandle, South Alabama, or South Mississippi? I'm getting married in October and my fiance and I want to drive away in an antique Cadillac.

Does anyone know of any antique dealers, renters, shop in the Florida panhandle or South Alabama?

It has to be a Cadillac... her father's a dealer for GM. We really don't care which model... but preferably something older than 1950 (something along the lines of 1931 Fleetwood or
1941 Series 60 Special).

How do I get a low/no cost divorce when I live in Mobile, Alabama but my spouse lives in Georgia?

How do I get a low/no cost divorce when I live in Mobile, Alabama but my spouse lives in Georgia? Some states offer something like Alaska's dissolution of marriage, but it appears to me (though I do not know for sure, because I cannot find the actual law) that Alabama doesn't allow this. I know for a fact that Georgia does not. My soon to be ex said he would file but being true to his personality, he has not and that presents a problem. Alabama law requires that the divorce be filed in Georgia, because that is where we last lived together. Although my understanding is that I can file in Alabama if I can prove that we've been separated for six months, which we have. Is there any way to do an interstate dissolution? That's probably a silly question.

I have found "forms" online that can purchased which claim to be legal in Alabama, but this seems suspect to me because the law isn't clear. I don't want to go through all the paperwork to find that it won't stand up in court. Not only that, but there was a large amount of debt incurred during the marriage which I would prefer not to be responsible for. He was notorious for ignoring bills and hiding costs. I want everything declared and divided. Whatever else which was incurred that isn't declared, he should be responsible for.

Am I better off just getting a lawyer? How do I find an inexpensive, but good one? I don't know anyone here so I have no one to ask. He hasn't paid me anything for child support (not that he has much himself) and I have very little money.

The key here is cost, convenience and not having to go into further debt.

Any advice?

Do I need to reregister for Alabama's Primaries?

I'm thinking about voting in the Alabama primary. This is something I've never done before. I'm already registered as a voter. I didn't vote in the last election but I did vote in the two (presidential elections) before that. According to UAB's Kaleidescope, I should register by January 25th. Is this the same registration as the last time I registered (for the general elections)? Should I register again? Should I just show up at my voting location? I haven't moved or anything. Am I right in assuming that I only get to vote for one candidate? I would personally like to vote for two, one for the republican of my choice and one for the democrat of my choice.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. I can definitely see how it could be abused. Maybe I shouldn't worry with it?

Where do we go to see neighborhood Christmas lights in Mobile, AL and metro Atlanta? We're going to be spending time over Christmas in both Mobile, AL and metro Atlanta and would like to drive through super-lit (starlight) neighborhoods.

We're aware of Life University, Lake Lanier and Bellingrath Gardens, but we're interested in neighborhoods (free) too. Can anyone recommend some places or a website that has detailed information?

What should we not miss in a 3 day drive from New Orleans to Atlanta? Looking for interesting cultural, historical, musical or culinary experiences. Would prefer the non-touristy stops. We know the places to hit in New Orleans and Atlanta - how about the places in between? The small towns off the beaten path... the weird... the cooky... the naturally beautiful...

Heading down South for the Holidays.

My best friend is stationed in Biloxi, MS with Americorps and I'm planning on going down there for a Southern roadtrip over the Christmas holidays. What should we see within 4-6 hours of Biloxi? [mi] We're Northern born and bred, having most recently lived in Philadelphia and Chicago, and so we were thinking of doing a giant circle through the South over the course of a week. Drive 2-3 hours, see stuff, spend the night, continue onwards.

I'd be interested in your favorite places to eat/things to see in MS, LA, TN, and AL. We're also concerned that everything might just completely shut down between Christmas and New Years. Is this something to worry about? Will it be safe for the two of us (22 and 23 female) to travel alone in a car in more rural areas, or should we stick to the major cities? Any places to definitely avoid?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Where can I find a print?

Where can I find a copy of a print I saw on display in Alabama? I recently had lunch at Chris' Hot Dogs in Montgomery, Alabama. On the wall nearest the cash register hung a panoramic print of Montgomery. The print featured a juxtaposition of all of the city's most notable architecture as though those buildings were on one street leading to the capital building.

Two business cards on the print referenced The Montgomery Independent and Stonehenge Gallery, but neither website seems to have information about the print. A label underneath said framed versions were available for purchase.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Help me find family-friendly winter holiday festivals and celebrations in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to be held this year (2007-2008)-- especially non-Christian celebrations like those celebrating Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or just winter itself. Or specific cultural celebrations that would offer something beyond the usual Xmas/Santa stuff. It's especially hard for me to get good descriptions since many holiday sites and city calendars aren't yet updated for the coming winter's festivals. I'd like specific towns/destinations to point others to (this is for a magazine article).

Gulf coast Alabama, vacation?

Where to vacation on the Gulf in Alabama? Wife and I planning trip, Gulf area of Alabama. Friends have recommended the Grayton Beach area, but we're not sold on anything specific. It's just the two of us. Our priorities, in no direct order:

Beach, but right on the beach not necessary
Cool area/walkable is great
Pet friendly (50 pound dog) huge bonus
Good food

We're looking for cute accommodations, preferably non-chain hotel. 2-3 nights, 4 nights max. Think cute B&B or small house rental...

So, mefi, help us find the perfect short vacation getaway!

Fun roadtrippy songs that mention the states of Louisiana and/or Alabama (or cities therin) prominently? Bonus: showtunes that do so! I'm going on an Easter road trip between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama with a friend and her two children.
We would like to make a mix cd for the trip made up of upbeat, child-appropriate songs (no language, not too heavy sounding) that mention either Louisiana or Alabama OR New Orleans or Mobile prominently in their lyrics.
Being musical theatre geeks, I'd also love to include some showtunes that also fit this criteria.
Need tips on restaurants/places to visit in Nashville, TN; Huntsville, AL; and Birmingham, AL... I will be taking a trip to see a friend that lives in Huntsville, AL; I will fly in to Nashville,TN on Saturday, Feb 17 (Early Afternoon), and then head over to Huntsville, AL later that day; then I will be flying out of Birmingham, AL on the afternoon of Monday, Feb 19...

Essentially I will be in Nashville, TN for about 4-5 hours, in Huntsville, AL 1 full day, and in Birmingham, AL for 4-5 hours...

Any tips on local restaurants (BBQ, etc...), events, and/or places I should visit?

These three posts have many good tips (Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham) but they are older posts, and I was wondering if there are any seasonal events happening on the holiday weekend...

I plan to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.

Thanks in advance!

Do most white guys in Alabama have their hair cut like the guys on Two-A-Days? How about the rest of the south? Is this considered attractive? I've been watching the MTV series Two-A-Days and it really is amazing. Sure, it brings back memories of my high school days, but what's really got me hooked is that damn hair.

I've spent time in every US region except the south (not including Flordia - I've been there a lot), and people generally have the same basic haircuts. But this show makes it seem like Alabamans (at least white male Alabamans) like to poof their hair and comb it downward so it covers their eyebrows. Is that really a popular hair style? Is this a new fad or a longstanding tradition? What celebrities have this hairstyle (besides Donald Trump)? How do you treat this hair and are there instructions on getting it to keep that way? Does it smell bad?

Is it popular in other states? Maybe even on the West Coast, where I live? Is this just a new fad by the younger generation that I'm missing out on and I don't understand because I'm over 25?

Are there any MeFis with this haircut? If not, would anyone be interested in growing their hair like this and journalizing their experiences?

brief stop in Alabama

What to do in the Riverchase Galleria area of Alabama (besides shop)? I'll be in Alabama on business this Thursday and Friday, and staying in the hotel in the Riverchase Galleria. Is there anything notable/interesting to see/do in the very immediate area? Good restaurants? Movie theater? Music venue? Restrictions: I won't have a car; I will only have free time in the evening/night.

Alabama getaway!

Civil Rights tour of Alabama, destinations, places to avoid? Me and the SO want to go on a week-long civil/voting rights tour of Alabama in January. Fly in, rent a car, noodle around, stay in cheap hotels, etc. We're thinking about the Selma - Montgomery - Tuskegee black belt area but this is still up in the air. We have a short list of things we'd like to see, but I've never been to most of Alabama before though I have travelled in the Deep South quite a bit. So, for anyone who has done a similar trip or who lives in the area, is there anything not to miss, or places to avoid entirely? We're on a tight budget and perfectly content to walk around and look at things, so I'd love to hear about interesting streets/neighborhoods as well as good museums and other more tourist-oriented things. Advice on good food, good lodging, hidden delights, also welcome. Thanks.

At loose ends in Tuscaloosa

Tell me what to do in Tuscaloosa, AL. I'll be there for grad school orientation next week and while my days are full, my wife and I would like to get out and have some fun in the evenings. Are there any hot spots close to campus? Anything we really shouldn't miss while we're there?

Fun in Huntsville Alabama

Looks like I'll be in Huntsville, Alabama, for a few days next week, without much of anything to do. Besides signing up for Spacecamp, are there any interesting things to do or see there? Museums and suchlike are interesting to me, as are good bookstores, record stores, and restaurants. I will have a car.

Books with gay protagonists?

ProposedAlabamaBookBanFilter -- As mentioned in the Blue, there is a piece of legislation proposed by Alabama State Representative, Gerald Allen, that seeks to ban "novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural" from publically-funded schools and libraries. If Mr. Allen's bill survives committee and passes, I cringe to consider just which literary classics would disappear from the shelves of Alabama libraries. Which, if any, of your favorites will become suddenly verboten?

Being an African American in Alabama- Should I be worried?

This is an extension of a question I asked 5 weeks ago. I am going to Auburn University in Alabama tomorrow and would like to know, as an African-American, if there'sanything I should be worried about. I haven't been down south in a long time and I have no idea what the climate, so to speak, is at the moment.
