Abbie Hoffman's cryptic "fly free" techniques

In Steal This Book, Abbie Hoffman states:
We know two foolproof methods to fly free, but unfortunately we feel publishing them would cause the airlines to change their policy.
Ever since I read the book as a kid, I've wondered what those methods were. Presumably, they're antiquated and safe to discuss. Anyone have any ideas?

But I used to sleep like a baby

I'm a relatively experienced air traveler and usually have no trouble napping on flights. But recently on the return leg of two trips I've experienced a dizzying, discombobulating roar in my ears when I drift from closed eyes to semi-sleep. The first time I just curled up and persevered, but my sleep quality was very poor and, more importantly, the experience left me dizzy for days afterwards. So the second time I forced myself to stay awake, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same feeling. If so, what have you done to combat/prevent it?

Shotgun of emergency international travel questions

A dear family member suddenly passed in Italy. I live in the Mid-Atlantic USA. I really need to travel to Italy on very short notice for the funeral. I am not a frequent air traveler to begin with, but have never been abroad in my life (though I do have a passport). I have no idea how this works. I want to know anything I should know about getting to and from my destination (e.g., negotiating customs). I also want to know how bereavement fares work, whether I should bother trying to get one, who people have had good experiences with, etc. [more inside]

Is it a bad idea for my terminally ill grandmother to go to the USA for 48hrs?

My dad and I are thinking of taking my 85yr old grandmother on a road trip. She was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last Thursday and decided on Friday that she doesn't want to go through treatment. She does, however, want to see her sister, sister's kids and grandkids one last time. However, they live 1,300KM away in a mid-sized Mid-West city in the States while we're in Toronto. We'd like to make this visit happen for grandma, recognize all the risks inherent in trying to do so, and would like to hear the stories/experiences of anyone who has done anything similar. Relevant details below the fold. Thank you. [more inside]

Where are all these flight deals?

People always tell me they found cheap flights by not buying direct from the airlines... however, when I search all the sites they recommend and the ones I find via google, they're always about the same price as buying direct from Air Canada. Flight Limbo Hell

What are our options? Thirteen days ago my wife and I flew to Canada from Birmingham UK using tickets booked via Canadian Affair ( a British travel agency). Will United care if I skip the first leg of a two-leg itinerary?

I'm flying from the east coast to southern California via San Francisco in a few weeks. I've decided that for the return trip, I'd like to drive up to San Francisco a few days early, skip the first leg of my return flight (SoCal to SFO), and just catch the second leg. What's the best website to book a flight online?

Air travel search engine filter: what's the best website to use to book a flight these days? I know this has surely been asked before, but this is the freaking internet -- things change, rapidly, and I want to know what's "up and coming" and worth checking out or which formerly reliable sites have gone downhill. So -- what do you use and what makes it better than the alternatives? For this upcoming flight, I mostly care about getting cheap tickets, but I'm interested in any info you care to share. Thanks!
