Advice for air travel with power wheelchair

We are flying for the first time with my daughter's power wheelchair, and could use some advice to make sure the chair gets to our destination, and home again, in one piece, while making life easy for baggage handlers. [more inside]

What makes an airline choose Lorna Doones as a long haul-only snack?

A few years ago, on a plane flight, I looked at the list of free snacks -- potato chips, cookies, etc. Next to one (and only one) item (the Lorna Doone cookies), I saw the annotation: "long haul flights only". What (probably) are their criteria for this choice, and what makes Lorna Doones a good choice for this distinction?

Help with vacation cancellation planning

This spring, I planned a trip from NYC to Denver and then SF in the middle of September. I purchased my three plane tickets and paid for strict-cancellation airbnbs in the two cities. Alas, I did not pay for travel insurance. Two months ago, I developed a health condition which to be treated, temporarily prevents me from flying. [more inside]

nervous about flying because i can't stop thinking about death

Complex multi-city (and continent) travel: do I need a travel agent?

Through a combination of work opportunities and family obligations, I have some really complex travel planned for next April. I am starting and ending in Stockholm, but will be in Asia, the US, and Central Europe in the middle -- in that order. My attempts to price tickets myself (on Expedia and similar sites) with the multi-city travel options have landed me prices in the $3k range, which seems pretty absurd (and also isn't even offering me good flight times/layovers). Will I have better luck with a travel agency? I've always booked all my own travel before. [more inside]

Is Global Entry worth it?

I have some international trips coming up in the latter half of this year and was thinking of getting Global Entry to reduce airport hassles. When I traveled abroad a few years ago, it seemed a definite advantage (at least at my airport, Dulles), if only for the TSA Pre-Check. But, is it still that way? I read recently that they get 50,000 new applications every month, so I imagine as more people join, it may not be as useful. [more inside]

Taking dog from UK to US, and back?

I and an American living in the Netherlands, and have taken my dog to the US several times from Schiphol when I'm taking a long-ish trip back to the States. She has a pet passport, and it has never been an issue going back through Amsterdam. I'm moving to the UK soon, and for my fall trip I was wondering if I should take her from the UK to the US, and back (probably from Heathrow), or stick with Amsterdam. [more inside]

What do you call it when a jet engine 'explodes' but the plane doesn't?

In 2001, I was on a passenger jet that made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff. Right around the time we would have reached 10,000 feet, there was an "explosion" (I think?) in one of the engines. After landing, the pilot told us what it was, but I can't remember. Help me remember the term? [more inside]

Abbie Hoffman's cryptic "fly free" techniques

We know two foolproof methods to fly free, but unfortunately we feel publishing them would cause the airlines to change their policy.
Ever since I read the book as a kid, I've wondered what those methods were. Presumably, they're antiquated and safe to discuss. Anyone have any ideas?

But I used to sleep like a baby

I'm a relatively experienced air traveler and usually have no trouble napping on flights. But recently on the return leg of two trips I've experienced a dizzying, discombobulating roar in my ears when I drift from closed eyes to semi-sleep. The first time I just curled up and persevered, but my sleep quality was very poor and, more importantly, the experience left me dizzy for days afterwards. So the second time I forced myself to stay awake, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same feeling. If so, what have you done to combat/prevent it?

Shotgun of emergency international travel questions

A dear family member suddenly passed in Italy. I live in the Mid-Atlantic USA. I really need to travel to Italy on very short notice for the funeral. I am not a frequent air traveler to begin with, but have never been abroad in my life (though I do have a passport). I have no idea how this works. I also want to know how bereavement fares work, whether I should bother trying to get one, who people have had good experiences with, etc. [more inside]

Is it a bad idea for my terminally ill grandmother to go to the USA for 48hrs?

My dad and I are thinking of taking my 85yr old grandmother on a road trip. She was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last Thursday and decided on Friday that she doesn't want to go through treatment. She does, however, want to see her sister, sister's kids and grandkids one last time. However, they live 1,300KM away in a mid-sized Mid-West city in the States while we're in Toronto. We'd like to make this visit happen for grandma, recognize all the risks inherent in trying to do so, and would like to hear the stories/experiences of anyone who has done anything similar. Relevant details below the fold. Thank you. [more inside]
