Does anyone have recommendations for dealing with wicked, terrible insomnia that seems to be caused by something I'm breathing in (judging by my racing heartbeat, constriction in my chest, and burning eyes)? Multiple Chemical Sensitivities are a part of this, so anyone with this who has learned a trick for controlling indoor air quality - please help me!!! [more inside]

HEPA Filter, uh, filter: AskMeFi is awash with general references to HEPA filters. How about some more specific advice? My books, which really own the house, would like a HEPA filter for the main library (11 x 22). I've been looking at the various Kenmore brands, for starters, as well as the usual consumer ratings sites. Price is a moderate object--a whole-house filter is out of the question right now, but a room-size portable can be done. Any recommendations from experience?

I recently acquired two cats which is lovely and enriching excepting that I am now living inside a giant hairball. Cat hair everywhere. Millions spent on lint rollers. First question: Can anyone recommend a decent, reasonably-priced vacuum cleaner that can tackle pet hair? It must have attachments and a HEPA filter. Also, I have bare floors. Second question: Does anyone use an Ionic Breeze or a similar air purifier? Is it worth the money?

ApartmentFunkFilter? I live in Seattle, in a 90+ year old apartment building. It's a great place except that, like most older buildings I've lived in, it's got kind of ... a funk. I don't really know how to describe it, other than the air smells kinda stale, especially when you first walk in. It's getting a little too cold to simply leave the windows open and box fans help to move the air around but don't really do that much to help with the staleness. Plus, the droning of box fans is kind of annoying. Also, we have two cats (and all that that implies...)

I'm curious if the ionic air purifiers thingies, which seem way overpriced, actually work. Of if there's another (preferably cheaper) way to get cleaner air in my apartment. Is something like the Hamilton Beach TrueAir what I want?
