The Devil I Don't Know is Still a Devil

What is the best option for an air travel gift card?

What is the best way to give a gift card to help pay for plane tickets for domestic US travel? It can't tie the recipient down to a particular airline and it must be a gift card, so please don't tell me to give cash. That would obviously be best.

Where's the quietest spot in a Southwest Boeing 737?

The Googles is giving me conflicting information: where is the quietest spot on a Southwest Airlines airplane? They fly Boeing 737s (-300/-500/-700/-800, if that means anything to anyone?). Is it going to be in front of, over, or behind the wings+engine? Are there differences between wind noise and engine noise? Thanks in advance.

Upcoming trip airline travel question

I have an upcoming trip to and from Chapel Hill, NC. While there, we will be traveling to the Washington DC area. My return flight leaves RDU, near Chapel Hill and routes through IAD, Dulles, at DC. Skipping the flight from RDU would save about four hours of driving back to North Carolina and realistically provide another full day in the DC area. Can I do this? If so, what are the restrictions and gotchas? Can I roll the RDU-IAD flight revenue over into a seat upgrade? Personal experiences with trying to do this welcome. Direct experience from airline and travel pros also welcome. Speculative answers less welcome. Thanks very much! [more inside]

Refundable airline ticket, or last minute purchase for uncertain date?

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in February. He lives in a different state. On a recent visit to see him, he suggested that my husband and I buy refundable airline tickets in case my dad's condition gets unexpectedly worse and I need to travel to see him on short notice. He thinks that this might be cheaper for me than having to buy tickets on very short notice. My impression is that nonrefundable tickets are fairly expensive, and I'm not sure if I can buy one that's open-ended enough for that purpose (my dad's prognosis is 1-3 years). I'm wondering if I should just wait and either 1) look for last-minute travel on Hotwire/Expedia/whatever or 2) accept being gouged for last-minute airline tickets. I'd appreciate any advice on what the best option is here, especially if there are some that I'm not thinking of right now.

But there's a whole empty plane here!

So, a general question based on an anecdote. Yesterday we were supposed to fly from Tampa to Chicago Midway. Because Midway was crazy, we left really late and eventually got diverted to Memphis. A few hours later, our flight was cancelled due to a (fixable, but not at midnight) mechanical problem, and now Southwest has to figure out how to get 143 people to Chicago. So...why not just put them on that same airplane tomorrow when it's fixed? [more inside]

Advice for a frequent flyer newb?

After not travelling much for most of my life, I've been on a quite a few flights in the past year, and plan on flying more in the future, domestic and international. I've just been using Orbitz, etc, to book flights, but are there better ways to do it if you're flying often? Should I focus on one carrier? How do frequent flyer miles work and how can I best take advantage of them? Is there a good resource for figuring all this stuff out? [more inside]

Pick one: Delta vs. United vs. American Airlines

Due to a new job, my wife and my family will be making regular trips from Boston to northern Michigan. The closest airport to her new job is Traverse City (TVC). WhiteTrash Airlines: fly the friendly sky!

I'm trying to find an old radio short called "White Trash Airlines" that I heard online in the early 90's. It was a parody of a United commercial and had the "Fly the friendly skies" tagline in it but I don't know where it came from or who made it. It was, however, very funny if you like hillbilly jokes. How fast can i get between domestic arrivals and international departures in the bangkok airport?

For those familiar with the Bangkok airport: On Wednesday morning, my flight from Koh Samui will land at 7:05 a.m. , and my flight from Bangkok to Taipei will take off at 8:25a.m. I'll have carry-on luggage only, and a Canadian passport. Will I have time to get from domestic arrivals to international departures in time to check in, get thru security and get on my Taipei flight? (They are two separate tickets.) Alternatively, will it be relatively easy to get on the later flight to Taipei if I miss the first? Its on China Airlines, I have no familiarity with their policies. [more inside]

Help me figure out what to do with AA miles

What do I do with 15,000 American Airlines miles? I have 120,000 British Airways miles - and the two airlines are part of the same network - but I don't think you can transfer miles between the two. I don't want to waste the 15,000 miles when they expire next year, but I don't see how I can use them. Correct strategy to deal with unexpected Expedia itinerary change

We booked a return international trip from city A to city C on Expedia (.au site). A subsequent email informed us it was ticketed as two separate tickets (due to incompatible airlines): city A -> city B, city B -> city C. Later, the B->C airline "changed" its flights by many hours, making the itinerary impossible to complete (by creating impossible connections). Expedia offers to arrange a refund only of the B->C connection. What can we do? [more inside]
