Bringing Pets in Airplane Cabin: I know that each airline has its limits on the dimensions of the under-the-seat carrier and combined weight, but how strict are they? Do airlines actually measure your carrier and weigh the pet plus carrier? Or just eyeball it? I'm wondering particularly about Northwest and American Airlines. Any horror stories or warnings appreciated.

Ideas for seeking corporate donations of tech equipment and air travel? I'm one of the co-founders of a free arts/tech workshop happening for the first time this August in Serbia. We've already had some modest success getting funding for this through traditional channels, but I also want to approach hardware companies and airlines to see if they can help us.

The great musical-instrument-on-plane paradox. How do you prepare (what case[s] do you buy and what strategies do you develop) when you need to travel on many different kinds/scales of airlines, with a delicate wooden instrument that MAY or MAY NOT be allowed as carry-on baggage (depending on circumstance, how full the plane is, and how much or little the inspectors care that it looks large, solid and "middle eastern")? I left my iPod in the seat pocket on a flight from SFO to IAD (I changed planes and went on to ROC) yesterday. I've made some attempts to locate it, but with the holiday travel and the huge backup due to Denver being closed, I'm having little success. I'm jumping through the hoops with the airport and airline, but having a tough time due to the heavy traveler volume. Has anyone else lost an item by leaving it in the seat pocket and got it returned? Any tips?

(Denied boarding Airline question) -- I just got back from what was supposed to be a cheap trip to Paris (rtrp $464 after tax) but on the return leg, I missed my Air France flight because NO COMPUTER SCREEN in CDG (Charles de Gaulle airport) had the flight listed. By the time I located the terminal of the flight, it was 45 minutes before take-off and despite not having carry ons and perhaps 5-10 people in the line for tickets, I was told the flight was closed and I was not going to be able to board...... I bought a $750 airplane ticket online from United. Flight is for the end of December. Got confirmation # and receipt, saw the money go out of my bank account. Four days later noticed the money is back in my account -- there is no sign that it was ever taken out. United.com still says my ticket is confirmed. What's up? Will they charge me the day I actually fly? Did they screw up and give me a free ticket?

I bought a non-refundable plane ticket on Sunday night from Northwest Airlines. It's now Tuesday afternoon and I need to make a change to my reservation. I know I can easily do this by paying their $100 service fee, but I'm trying to avoid this. Any help is appreciated. [more inside]

How can I watch prices for a roundtrip flight for a few-day visit somewhere? The dates aren't as important as cheap fares-- pretty much any time through this coming April would be fantastic. I'd just like to watch for lower prices. How can I do this?

Anyone flown extremely long distances with an infant? We're planning to fly to Thailand from NYC with an 11-month-old and I'm wondering if it's best to fly direct and get it over with in one long ugly trip or fly with stops in Seattle and Taiwan so baby (and we) can get a break for a bit. There's a little more info inside. [more inside]

UK/EU flight. My friend's plane was 3 hours late, flying Southampton to Edinburgh, making her miss a wedding. I have an inkling that this means she is likely to be able to make her airline pay out under recent EU law. Is this the case and if so what's the best way to make them pay?

How far in advance, or how close to the time, is the most advantageous time to purchase airline tickets in order to get the cheapest fares? For instance, if I were planning to travel in early August, and it's late April now, should I buy my ticket now, or should I wait until closer to the time (and how close is the "sweet spot")? Are there risks of the price going up substantially (more than $100)? This refers to U.S. travel (SEA-ATL in this case), traveling mid-week, with a weekend stay.

So I appear to be trapped in Paris. Flew to Europe over the holidays for a conference in Berlin, and thought I'd spend a week in Paris and fly out of there instead. British Airways is informing me they'd like about a grand to get me out of Paris, and no less if I take the chunnel up to London to catch the London-SFO leg there. Best option I've found is to try to delay the return flight until I can actually make my way back to Berlin (it's too late now). Still on hold finding out how painful that's going to be. Anyone have any better ideas?
