Who would want an old wall unit air conditioner / heater (PTAC)?

I live in a condo that is heated and cooled by PTAC's - 100+ pound electric air conditioner / heater wall units such as are common in hotel rooms. Except that two of mine are 15+ years old and don't work well, such that I need to replace them. I want to find someone to take my old PTAC's away and ideally help me put the new ones in place too. I figure I'd just put a posting up on Craigslist with that offer (no charge for the units, but I don't pay anything either), but before I do, I'm curious: are there really people out there who would be interested in this? If so, why? For the scrap metal? For the bit of life left in the things? Are they worth more than I thought, should I charge something? More info on them below. [more inside]

How much will it cost to run window air conditioner all year in PA?

How to cool off my basement apartment this summer?

Summer is coming! I love my apartment. It is large, it is in a wonderful neighborhood, it is affordable, it is also in Brooklyn (miracle!). However, I am from a Midwestern clime, and am hopelessly intolerant of summer heat. I have a basement apartment, so the windows that I have all have bars on them. [more inside]

Please help me install a window air conditioner safely

I own this relatively new (only one season of use) 6000+ BTU GE window air conditioner, but have lost the plastic framework that allows it to be installed in a window. Does a universal kit exist that will fit this A/C (and if so where can it be ordered online)? Also, please share your tips for successfully and safely installing a window A/C unit that won't ever fall out? [more inside]

Can you listen to my AC and tell me what's wrong with it?

We left our air conditioner in the window during a cold winter (stupidly uncovered). Now when we turn it on, it makes a ghastly scraping sort of sound for as long as we run it. I've recorded it and taken a photo; any idea what might be the culprit and how to fix it? [more inside]

Why would moving a car stereo break the aircon?

My wife removed the stereo from our 2006 Renault Scenic to extract a coin that had been stuffed in the CD slot by one of our lovely children. This wasn't the first time she'd done this, and there haven't been any problems in the past. However, upon returning the unit this time, the dash controls for the stereo were found not to work, only those on the steering column. She removed the unit again, checked the fuses, replaced the unit - and now the bloody air conditioner is dead. [more inside]

How to de-mold an air conditioner?

Hi, I have 2 window A/Cs that are pretty standard as far as those things go. They have a ton of black mold in the output fan area, and presumably within the A/C workings themselves. Is there any way to reliably get rid of this mold? Or should I simply replace them (possible, if not ideal?)

Window air conditioner suddenly randomly tripping circuit breaker

We have a window A/C unit that is about three years old. Since we bought it, it has worked flawlessly to cool our bedroom for the few weeks a year that we need it... until now. We put it back in the window last Wednesday, and it worked fine until Monday evening. Now, seemingly without rhyme or reason, but usually (of course) in the middle of the night, it will trip the circuit breaker. [more inside]

How can I install an air conditioner in a 5' wide window?

My bedroom window is 5' wide, which seems to be too wide for the traditional air conditioner side accordion flaps to cover. The previous owners mounted a steel bar horizontally at the height of the air conditioner, installed the air conditioner all the way over on the right, and then hot-glued a piece of plexiglass to cover the leftmost 60% of the window. It looked crappy, leaked air, and let in more street noise than I'd like. Is there a better way to do it? [more inside]

Should I get a window a/c for the bedroom even if we have central air?

We have a 2000sqft house with central air. We are fine keeping it at 76 or warmer during the day, but like a cold bedroom at night. Surely getting a window unit for our bedroom and closing the door makes more sense than cooling down the whole house at night. Even if we did close all the nonbedroom registers every night--which would be a chore I'd rather avoid. Is there any downside to this I'm not appreciating? Ot would it make no difference to our bill? Woulf it put less wear and tear on our central unit?

Help me rig my air conditioner

My apartment has a heater/air conditioner combo-unit that looks like this. It outputs cold air via the vents along the top. PROBLEM: There's no way to direct the air flow. This means it's pointed at my desk (BrrrRRRrr!!!) but it's not sending cool air to the rest of the room (HOT!). Can you think of anything clever I can clip to the front vents to redirect at least some of that air?! [more inside]

Will my appliances work in Europe?

I'm moving to Germany in a couple of months and have a few questions about using various 110V US-purchased appliances on the local 220V power. Specifically the 50Hz/60Hz issue - how big of a deal is it? My understanding is that anything with a motor may have a shorter lifespan and run somewhat less efficiently (and of course anything that uses AC for timing will run slow), but any other issues? Cool as a cucumber

Hypothetical thermo-engineering question. Let's say you have a room. It's a living room. It's about 300 sq feet and open on one end (This can't be closed). There's an air conditioner in the living room in the window on the west side of the room. The problem with the air conditioner is that it doesn't project very well. There's a few feet of empty space between the air conditioner and the couch, which it does a great job of cooling, but if you're not standing in front of it you're SOL. [more inside]

Our air conditioner doesn't work very well.. it blows out cool air but the cool air doesn't travel to where it needs to be so the room doesn't feel cool. Sitting there in a hot room with the AC at full blast seems like a huge waste of money. Is there any way to determine if a new air conditioner will save us electric bill money or is that a foregone conclusion/obvious "yes"?

A/C acts like it's on, though it's not

I have a phantom central air system. I turn the upstairs unit off at night, because my bedroom gets the coldest of the rooms in the house when it's turned on, and my side of the bed is directly under a vent. Anyhow, last night the unit was off, but the vent still made noise like it was working. Vents in other parts of the house sounded like they were working as well, though the unit was off. Though the vents were making noise, I don't think the rooms were cooling. What's going on, and is this the sign of something worse?

Advice on installing an air conditioner into a window sleeve that's too big?

In the apartment I'm moving into, each room has a wall sleeve (just below the window) for an air conditioner. We tried installing one of my air conditioners in there tonight, and it's too small to fit the space. It mostly fills it, but even with the fins on either side of the air conditioner pulled out, there are still spaces above and below. Does anyone have any advice on how to properly install the air conditioner? [more inside]
