I was wondering if anyone has any experience with LG Multi-zone air conditioners? We have a multi-zone system that has been working fine until recently. Now, when I try to run the AC I get a flashing CH 26 and CH 46 error on the units. They work fine if we just use the fan settings. Do I have a bad compressor/inverter or is it something worse?

I'd like to install an air-conditioner to cool a 200 sq ft. bedroom. Problem is, the bedroom is fitted with crank-style casement windows, rather than sash windows with an opening for a rectangular air-conditioner. Will I have to endure the summer heat, or do I have options? [more inside]

My heat pump / air conditioning unit (HVAC?) is not blowing in my house. I have a programmable thermostat. When I walked past it this morning it said 80 degrees. I bumped it down a couple of degrees and waited to see if it would kick on. No such luck. The unit outside ( the condenser I think.... large box with a fan on top) did turn on but nothing is coming out of the vents. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I am getting ready to have to spend some serious money on a replacement? Thanks!

Help me keep cool! Ok, I'm a bit OCD about this I realize. I'm wondering if there's some way to test the AC in my apartment to see if it's working properly. Is there a special thermometer to use to test the air temperature coming out of the vents? If so, what should that temperature be? [more inside]

My landlord in NY claims that our heater must turn on when the temperature drops. If we wanted to prevent this, a technician would have to "turn the valves off" -- a cumbersome process that risks the valves later freezing and "popping" and steam destroying our apartment. True? Is this common? And if so, how can we deal with a too-hot room, other than by opening the window?

Our homeowner's association doesn't allow window air conditioning units to be mounted outside of dwellings. But with our built-in inside window ledge, we can put our AC window unit right against the screen, keeping it fully indoors while still venting outside. Are there any health or safety reasons why we shouldn't do this?

This summer I, unfortunately, will be living in my old bedroom at my parent's house. To make matters worse, it gets ridiculously humid/hot in my room (the A/C doesn't make any difference at all.) A window-mounted A/C unit won't fit in my vertical, outward opening "french" windows and while I've considered a "personal air conditioner" the hose poses a similar problem with my windows, a problem I'm hoping to solve. I look to you, AskMeFi reader, to make my summer stay a little more bearable. [more inside]

We have a Chrysler Airtemp A/C unit (more than 20 years old) that's gone on the fritz 2 days before we're scheduled to be away for 2 weeks. Although it's in the 80's outside, about 6 inches of frost has formed on the rubber-insulated tube next to the outside unit. There's condensation all along the line that runs through the basement to unit where the fan and the copper tubing are located. The latter is also covered with frost but is now melting since I've turned things off at thermostat. The fan will only work if it's set to manual. I've called a repairman and he's suppose to come tomorrow. In the meantime is there any way for me to determine on my own if this is a catastrophic breakdown that will require a new unit or if it's possible for me to do something on my own to get the thing going?

How do you air out an air conditioner? My housemate left his on all yesterday evening during our barbecue--not a problem if it wasn't positioned right over the grill. Now whenever he runs it the entire room smells of grill smoke, even though the smell has long since gone from outside. We've run it overnight with the door to his deck open to try to circulate air through it, but the smell is as strong as ever. Do we need to take it apart? Spray it with Febreze? What do you suggest?

Our air conditioner is going out and has to be replaced. We are likely going to replace it with two standard units as the single unit has never heated or cooled the entire house evenly. The heating/air guy said that would be ideal but would cost 8-10 thousand vs 4 thousand or less if we just bought a new 5 ton unit. However the electric company is offering to loan people the money if they want to buy heat pumps. Not having a lot of extra money right now, that is tempting IF heat pumps are likely to do the job, which I am not sure about. [more inside]
