So, I finally wrote a novel and I'm ready to start looking for an agent. I found this via twitter, and the agent looks like a good fit for my book. The submission guidelines at her agency say "Please mail submissions to the attention of ETHAN ELLENBERG". [more inside]
One of my closet relatives has self-published a book and now has revisited with hopes of submission to book agents. Aside from being a really interesting and good story, he is flummoxed by the plethora of requirements agents require (synopsis page, sample page, query letters, no attachements etc). He has used OpenOffice to create and is looking for software to help make agent submissions? Any ideas? More Inside the fold! [more inside]
The treatment I get from estate agents in the UK is almost as though they are not looking for business. I have been trying to buy a house for over a year and find estate agents to be surly, often not returning calls. How do I make clear my interest and what should I do to make sure I am treated well and fairly by estate agents in the UK?
I've finished a self-help book and want to try to get an agent. I'm looking for recommendations for websites that have the most accurate, up-to-date information about agents that solicit self-help books. I've done a lot of research and found sites, but I don't know how to determine which lists are accurate, up-to-date, don't contain entries of agents who scam you by charging you after the fact, etc. Any recommendations for finding an agent will be very much appreciated. Thanks!
I just signed my first publishing deal after the publisher approached me directly. I had been noncommittally talking to an agent before this--no representation agreement or anything, just hypotheticals and suggestions. When the publisher contacted me, I just jumped for it and didn't tell the agent until it was done. Did I just screw over that agent, or is this just business? [more inside]
I've had some success this past year in publishing through small presses. I'm seeking direction in my literary career. A lot more details inside. [more inside]
The computer reservation system that airline personnel at airports use to rebook flights for customers, change seats, and so on seem markedly slower than when the customer uses the internet to pick a seat, or book or change a flight. Why is that? [more inside]
1. My partner and I are planning an 8-day/7-night trip to Costa Rica to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Our plan is volcano + rain forest + beach. Any suggestions on specific places and must sees or must dos? 2. Any recommendations on the best travel agencies to work with to arrange the Costa Rica portions of our trip? 3. I've already heard from 4 companies and they've responded with essentially the same package - 3 nights at Arenal, 3 nights at Manuel Antonio, 1 extra night in either of those places or in San Jose. The prices are in the $3800-$4000 range except for one company which comes in way below the others at $2715 - am I potentially getting scammed if I go with this company?

OK, I've posted on this subject before. Each time, I'm a little further along. Here is where I am right now. I've been working on a book since March. The idea upon which the book is based has been getting a lot of attention recently and has consistently been in the news for about four years. [more inside]

I have a web site. I want to write a book based on the topic. I have publishers/agents asking to talk to me, but I don't know if I'm ready. For one thing, I'm not convinced traditional publication is best — I'm intrigued by self-publishing and e-books. I'm looking for general advice: What are the pros and cons of each method? It seems that unless I'm lucky, traditional publishing offers the lowest dollar return. But are there other, intangible benefits I'm missing? Exposure? Having somebody who knows what they're doing guide me along? And how do I approach a discussion with agents/publishers so as to get the best deal? [more inside]

We've been talking to a generally nice/enthusiastic real estate agent for the purposes of selling our home. She's quoted us that approximately 9-10% of the listing price will go to cover her commission, the other agent's commission, and the various closing costs in between. This strikes us as rather high - we were thinking 5-6%. What's the breakdown and truth here?
