Where can one donate to Iraqi and Afghan victims of violence?

Are there any organizations I can donate to or help with that are devoted to cleaning up the messes we made in Afghanistan and Iraq? I keep seeing news of American and allied bombings accidentally killing children and civilians, and it seems like all these require something more than just an "oopsie!" or indifferent silence. Help my family stay in touch with a deployed dad

I need updated info on the best way for a deployed solider in Afghanistan to send and receive calls from the US. He is taking a macbook. Do we buy a GSM cell phone, use Google voice, skype or something else? I am willing to spend $50-100 per month for options. He is starting at Bagram AFB but will move around some. He will be deployed for 6 months starting in May. There will be a period in the summer where the kids will be at camp and will only have access to a phone. Thanks.

I'm looking for a blog about a civilian embarking on a short-term deployment to Afghanistan (or Iraq?) in some sort of support role—I think he was involved in engineering or computer modeling or mapping or something similar. Help me add truthiness to this fictional anecdote involving the military.

I want to write a short, not-very-detailed fictional anecdote about a soldier who gets separated from his unit during a (short) firefight and winds up lost for a few minutes in a Middle-Eastern city, before his fellows find him. This will be just a few paragraphs in a larger story. [more inside]

Attention Fox News: don't fuck with Canada

I'm having trouble tracking down Troy Hurtubise's "Don't fuck with Canada" YouTube response to Fox News host Greg Gutfeld's inflammatory commentary about the Canadian military on Red Eye. I'm sure the numerous violent threats that pepper the video might have something to do with why I can't find it anywhere, but I've never had this much trouble tracking down something that got a fair bit of press when it first aired... Can you help me out, hivemind?

Virtual Afghanistan?

In Thomas Friedman's weak OP-ED entitled www.jihad.com, he writes: “Let’s not fool ourselves. Whatever threat the real Afghanistan poses to U.S. national security, the “Virtual Afghanistan” now poses just as big a threat. The Virtual Afghanistan is the network of hundreds of jihadist Web sites that inspire, train, educate and recruit young Muslims to engage in jihad against America and the West.” If this is true, could someone provide examples? I mean, I'm sure they're using the internet to recruit people, but this makes it sound far more sophisticated than I would have assumed.

Books about the British Empire in Afghanistan?

I was talking with a friend about the "graveyard of empires," b*tching about politics, and we both realized that we knew pretty much nothing about the British experience in Afghanistan in the 19th century. (I have a vague recollection about it being background for some Sherlock Holmes stories. She remembered some Kipling.) What books would you recommend for getting a good understanding of that period of history? Bonus points for an engaging writing style and for not being the length of an encyclopedia. Thanks!

Help a soon-to-graduate PhD find work in Iraq or Afghanistan

Hi! I will soon graduate from a top computer science program with a PhD. I am interested to work in Iraq and Afghanistan for a year or two. Clearly, I prefer to work in the "green zone", but am willing to work alongside troops in the combat zone. I am quite versatile and can do alot of stuff, e.g., teaching, designing software, engineering work, testing, maintaining complex systems, etc. Does anyone know how I can go about this? I tried looking at KBR's and FLOUR's job postings for contractors. But they primarily list jobs that are in food service, transportation, warehousing, etc. I like to get a job that is intellectually fulfilling. Oh. One more thing. I am a foreign national from a country that is friendly to the US and the NATO countries. Thanks! :)

Jonathan "Keith" Idema and Ed Carballlo

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about Jonathan "Keith" Idema. The guy who was sentenced to 10 years in Afghanistan for running a prison and anti-terror group supposedly outside of US and Afghan control. I've read the BBC stuff that's out there. Does anyone have any other information about this guy? I heard he went to jail for fraud in the US. Also, he had a documentary filmmaker named Ed Carballlo with him. I'm interested in learning more about him as well... Anyone? [more inside]
