Too sad to be good convo partner?

Ok, so I've been having this problem lately (and I think it's related to my recent depression) where I meet new people and kind of expect that I'll never develop any friendship with them, but then it actually does happen, and I realize in horror that when they bring up previous conversations we've had, I act completely clueless because I didn't bother to remember it in the first place, and they say something like, "Remember we were talking about how my mom lives literally right next door to you?" (seriously, that happened today) and I remember suddenly, but clearly have already made it obvious that I didn't remember it in the first place... That's been happening a lot lately, and I want to know how to recall what I talked about with people more. [more inside]

What are the sexual steps you take while dating?

I'm female in my mid-twenties and due to circumstances have been a late entrant into dating. I've been out with several guys (ages 27 - 33) and am trying to get a better handle on how quickly things move forward in terms of physical/sexual. So while every guy, girl, and experience is different, could someone share what they might consider standard in their experience? I'd be curious to know what peoples' typical natural progressions are (for a person they're dating, not a hook up) in terms of the steps, not necessarily timing. For instance, do you generally do the first base/second base/third bases in order? [more inside]

Can you grow goals?

I used to have clear goals. Now I don't. Have you been through a foggy period in which you had no clue what you wanted to do with your life while everyone around you spoke with confidence about moving abroad, writing the book or saving the world? What can I do to shake myself out of limbo before 10 or 15 years fly by? [more inside]

Advice for a recent college graduate dealing with depression

I'm a recent college graduate and long time depression sufferer. Now I've suddenly been cast out into the "real world" with no directed day-to-day course of action and I'm feeling lost and needing help. Currently near by the San Francisco Bay Area, I'm needing to settle down soon to make some money and also receive the mental health care that I believe I need. The problem is that I'm totally broke. Any practical advice on breaking a stubborn depression when you're not made of money would be sincerely appreciated. [more inside]

Advice for geeks?

What advice would you give to a young geek? What are the best sites with that advice? I have a geeky younger brother, and I want him to avoid many of the pitfalls and social isolation that hit me and have hit others. I've already sent him The Five Geek Social Fallacies, the Nice Guys rant, and at least one Something Awful thread. Similar sites, as well as personal advice, would be appreciated.

Buffalo University: Where to stay?

Looking for good, cheap accommodation in Buffalo, NY. My partner is visiting to work at Buffalo Uni for about 7 days in late September. They've offered to organise accommodation in a Holiday Inn at $98 a night. This feels a little steep. We'd like to shop around a bit, perhaps look at alternatives other than a hotel/motel. Perhaps a student "sleep in my spare room" scheme or something. Advice much appreciated. [more inside]

"A good marriage is where both people feel like they're getting the better end of the deal."

Two of my best friends are getting married (to one another!) and I'm putting together a book of letters, photos, advice, poems, etc. from everyone invited to the wedding. A lot of what I've found are love poems and vows written in the first person about how much the speaker loves the intended, which might feel a bit weird coming from the wedding guests. I'm looking for more general advicey-type stuff, about marriage as an institution or love in the abstract. Funny or serious; the couple are extremely happy together and have great senses of humor. I want to take up surfing. I live by the sea (for the first time in my life) and I used to skateboard as a teenager, so it seems a good choice of hobby for a fat woman approaching the mid-life crisis and wanting both fun and exercise. What do I need to know? Can I just get a cheap 2ndhand board and a massive wetsuit and go for it? Or should I take lessons? What sort of board should a starter surfer get?
