Pacific Northwest road trip

We want to drive from Contra Costa County, CA, to Anglicon 2015 in Seattle. We'd like an interesting drive up and back down that balances sights and time, and would like to hit Portland along the way (and maybe tiptoe into Canada after Seattle). We have lots of specific requests, so we'd love some help. [more inside]

Financial advice for a very fortunate 18 year old with a 401k?

There isn't any matching, but my employer does contribute a flat amount. How much of my paycheck should I contribute to this 401k? How should I operate the 401k, and what kinds of investments should I make? How much should I save or invest seperately, in other accounts? Are there any other actions I should be taking, financial or otherwise? [more inside]

What to do if I'm being paid less than agreed upon in an interview?

I recently took a part-time job tutoring at a nonprofit, and was told that I'd get paid $X/hr. Today, I was pulled aside and told by my supervisor/interviewer that I would instead get paid $Y/hr. I should have confronted her about it at the time, but I wasn't confident that I could think clearly in the moment so I asked for some time to think things over. What should I do so that I can get at least some of this back? [more inside]

1.85% on 45k student loan - just pay the minimum?

So, I'm selling my house and will have some extra cash, finally. I have a consolidated student loan that after years of steady payments, has come down to a very low 1.85% interest rate. Given the current economic conditions, and an intense desire to have my money work hard for me after years of being in the doldrums, should I up the payment and try to save a tiny bit on interest? Or would it be better to stuff my IRA, or put money into a no-load fund or index? [more inside]

Requesting guidance re: stalkerish ex-friend

Hi all, I have a former friend with mental health issues who is somewhat obsessed with me and has been increasingly creeper-ish over the past year. I just found out today that he now lives within 1.5 miles of me and I'm a bit freaked out. Would like to request input/advice re: next steps, partially because I'm not sure how concerned I should be. Because "good presentations site" on Google doesn't help

About a week ago, I saw a very nicely designed site (parallax-y scrolling, a teal color scheme) where a (famous?) Web developer or engineer had collected her/his advice on giving good presentations, including thoughts on slides, handouts, timing, dealing with nerves, the q&a, etc. It was the perfect thing to send to people gearing up for a big talk, particularly in the tech field. It was recently launched, I think just in the last month -- I'd found it because someone on Twitter or Hacker News or somewhere had just linked to it. It was great and now I can't find it again. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? (Sadly almost all the salient keywords that I can think of for searching for this page are uselessly generic.) Thanks very much.

Non-profit career help in Britain?

Last October, I started a charity that since April I have won some good grants, grown over the last three months from 10 to 54 clients. Well enough, I am happy to continue working on it as a volunteer and board member. But, it doesn't need full-time employees. I have got some consulting work beginning in November. I would like to find a full-time job. Explaining "I did this, it is going well, now I need some money" is difficult. I am trying to find a non-profit or NGO career consultant in England or the EU to help sort this all out. Can you help?

Is there a good quote or idiom for this sentiment?

It doesn't have to 100% match the sentiment, but I'd love if it has the same general lesson (and is more concise than the following): "An idea that you keep in your head, incessantly perfecting, is worth nothing. Whereas the person who is willing to actually act on an idea, even if it's imperfect, has accomplished something. So instead of getting hung up on perfection, just DO something and learn from it for the next time." I'm kind of looking for what, say, Diablo Cody would say to her hipster haters who have never finished a screenplay. Or what you'd tell your friend who wants to be a writer but has been tinkering with their novel for the last 200 years. Oh, and I know about "perfect is the enemy of the good."

Who should be responsible for my ex-wife's birthday gift?

I've been divorced for several years now. My ex-wife and I get along amicably. I am single and she has been involved in an LTR since the divorce became official. Everything's fine, everyone's happy. Our kids are thriving. My ex-wife's birthday is in three weeks and up until now I've been the one to coordinate helping the kids get her something for her birthday. It occurred to me that it's probably time for the New Guy to take this over, right? They're not engaged, he still has his own place, but he does spend a lot of time there in your standard domestic situations. I have no problem discussing this with my ex, I'm just looking for a sanity-check on this idea before I bring it up. Am I missing something? Is this even a good idea? (For the record, I am single and she will probably be responsible for my birthdays (vis-a-vis the kids) for the forseeable future.)

How do I tell him they want to let him go

I work on a small office, my stepson also works there. He is bright but for some reason his performance is poor, he makes a lot of mistakes that costs money, and doesn't care about the job at all. The office manager told me today that they don't let him go because they hope my stepson will find another job soon and leave (he just finish a MBA) but asked me not to tell anyone. The problem is that I don't think he is looking for another job. I don't want to involve my husband. I think my stepson has a great opportunity of looking for job while he has this one. What would be the best way to get him to know it without breaking my promise of not telling anyone? Thanks!
