Legal Career Advice

I am looking for some career advice regarding search techniques and information about non-traditional legal jobs that I may be overlooking. I am interested in international law, environmental law, administrative law, and trade and investment law. I have work experience in international law and have also lived and studied abroad. Prior to law school I worked in finance for four years (my undergraduate degree is in international finance), I am located in the Northeast, and I am awaiting results from the bar exam which I took this past July. Friend just gave birth. Leaving her husband. What does she need to know?

Not the happiest circumstances to bring a new child into this world. After years of supporting her husband, financially and emotionally, she's reached her limit. He's dealing with some addiction issues, and has become increasingly hostile with the birth of this baby. Maybe they'll work this out one day, but right now she doesn't feel safe, has filled her car with personal belongings and is staying with family. She left him a lengthy note, but does not want to talk to him in the next few days. This has been a long time coming, and while I don't imagine it will be a surprise—his family has actually encouraged her to do this—he won't react well. What sort of legal precautions should she begin taking? [more inside]

ask.lawyerfilter?

I am currently involved with a criminal case. I have a lawyer, but would like a resource for multiple opinions on some questions I have related to the case. Is there a forum frequented by lawyerly types? A paid website where I can poll a panel of lawyers? Any offline resources? Thanks you.

Mortgage payment audit advice

How can I find out whether or not my mortgage company is ripping me off? I thought about something like a "forensic audit" but I see via Google that that is the hot new scam, and I don't want to be taken for a ride (twice). I am not looking to modify my loan or get out of my mortgage, I just want to make sure that my payments (for which I pretty much always pay extra) are being applied correctly. [more inside]

Hey, that's not what you told me last time!

(you are not my lawyer filter) My lawyer has 35+ yrs of experience in family law and is also a guardian ad litem. I am involved in a family case regarding legal custody in a state whose preference is for joint legal custody (not joint physical). He told me in the past that I had a good case for sole legal custody. Now that I am a defendant in a motion for joint legal, and the circumstances of the case have not changed, he is telling me something different, or avoiding most of my questions. How do I approach this? [more inside]

Who gets arrested when our "urban outdoorsman" sign holders break the law?

I was run over, should I take legal action? If so, how?

So I was crossing the street right after work in the crosswalk, on a green walk sign. A cab was making a left turn, ran into me, knocked me down, and then ran over my foot! The worst part was that he stopped ON TOP OF MY FOOT, wth?! So he gets out of the car to check on me and i'm on the ground screaming bloody murder- BACK THE F OFF MY FOOT- pretty funny when i re-tell it now since miraculously (doctor's words) I was spared from any major injury! Question on Grants: Taxes, Keeping, Making a Living, Etiquette, and Legal Ramifications

I decided to try my hand at making a grant application, sent the 8 pages or so letter and forgot all about it. Then yesterday, I got a call indicating that I may actually have a chance of getting some if not all of the amount I requested ($40+ grand for video/photo equipment/NLE gear, stipend). Although I'm seriously excited, I have a few questions to ask you, fellow MeFites:

1. Will I owe taxes for this money?
2. What questions might their lawyer/trustee ask me if they ever call?
3. Do I get to keep the equipment after? (I know its stupid but this is my first time)
4. Can people actually earn a living doing this "grant" gig?
5. Is there some etiquette involved when receiving the moolah? (i.e. hugging the donor, kissing her feet, thank you letters)
6. Am I absolutely, legally bound to follow through with this project?
6. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Public photography laws

I see lots of photographers with candid photos of strangers from the park, on the street, etc., but I'm wary of getting sued just for taking some amateur photos. What laws, guidlines, rules of thumb, etc., should I use when taking photos of people in public?
