Why doesn't Gmail understand what kind of spam to advertise?

How advanced are Google Ads, really? I thought we were all frightened of Google mining our GMail accounts to serve targeted ads. But when I check the spam folder of my GMail account, all I get is adverts for recipes ("Ginger Spam Salad - serves 1, refrigerate overnight") using the food product Spam! [more inside]

Hey Archie, do I have what it takes to be a cartoonist? (looking for ads)

In Archie comics in the 80's (and maybe still today), there was an ad where you copied a sketch and mailed it in, and a company would tell you if you had what it takes to be a cartoonist. Or something like that. What was the company, and can you help me find the sketches or maybe an ad itself? [more inside]

What form of advertising should I use?

I am 19 and starting a small IT business in orange county, CA. I have 3 medium size clients that use me regularly, and I've taken on my first employee part time recently. But I just had my first month where no one needed IT work done, because I'm too good of a job! And this indicates to me that I need to do some proactive advertising. What is the best method of advertising to get my company's name out there? [more inside]

How do they do that: subway flick-book style movies

While riding on the subte (subway) in Buenos Aires I noticed an advert for the new Nike trainers. The advert was on the sides of the tunnels between stations (just before Carlos Gardel on Line B). There was a flick-book like movie showing the evolution of the shoes. You could see it from the main windows on the train but not from the windows in the doors. How does this work? [more inside]

Any (lab) test? We're so discreet, we even use parentheses.

Billboards around town offer the service of "Any (lab) test." The companies offering the service vary, but they all include the word "lab" in parentheses. Why the consistent parenthetical? The service wouldn't really make sense without the parentheses, would it?

get rich on rock'n'roll?

How do I build my writer's portfolio?

Help me get started as a freelance copywriter. I have one ad under my belt that I created for the company that I work for (I'm not in the marketing department but was lucky enough to lend my talent). The marketing department is now run under a different manager and the opportunity for more is no longer there. The ad appeared on the back cover of several magazines. That's it...one ad for my portfolio. What is the best way to build my portfolio as a writer? How do I gain business and experience with an extremely slim portfolio? Someone once said that I should go back to school and try to build it through projects. This isn't really an option and I'm really not looking for any more education. Any advice is appreciated.

Name that tune!

While watching the olympics I've seen a few ads with Visa's new slogan, "Life Takes Visa" and I really like the song playing in the background. It seems like a pop/rock song (with a little classical in there too), though it may have been composed specifically for the commercial. So my question: if you've seen the ad, do you know what song that is? (And where I could get it? - hopefully iTunes)
