I received an email the other day from someone who claims they have a client who wants to advertise on my blog, which I only started a couple of months ago. I can't tell if it's legit, and I'm wondering how best to find out. I don't have any advertising on my blog, nor do I have any mentions of seeking advertisers.

What is the branded history of the
Marlboro Red cigarette? I am contemplating the history of marketing to women right now, and I am especially interested to know if the "Red" branding of today goes back to when the cigarettes had red filters to blend with lipsticks. Are they "Reds" of today called such because of the red packaging, the processing of the tobacco, the historical marketing to women, or something else entirely? It would be especially interesting to me if these cigarettes, which are hyper-masculine today, are direct descendants of a quintessentially feminine product.

I’m trying to start up a housecleaning business, but can’t figure out how to actually get any customers. I’ve been putting flyers on houses in fairly upscale neighborhoods – McMansions, hip urban condos, places populated by professionals and executives. I have an ad on craigslist, although my city doesn’t use craigslist much. I’m not getting anywhere with either of those methods though.

I have a sort of photo sharing website that breaks content up by category. There is not much text on the site, and we've been rejected by Google AdSense on that basis (not enough text). I'd like to find an ad network that will let me supply keywords (e.g., we have a gardening section, so we could sell space for gardening ads on those parts of the site) instead of scanning the site for them. Can anyone recommend an ad network that might do this?

In
84 Charing Cross Rd Helene Hanff's 1st letter to the bookshop Marks and Co., written in October 1949, says she's responding to an ad she saw by them in the
Saturday Review of Literature. One little problem: I recently went over a library archive of the
Saturday Review. I couldn't find an ad from Marks and Co. in any of the October issues of 1949, nor in any of the issues in September, August, or July. This involved looking at both the display ads and the small-print classifieds. It also involved looking at the
Saturday Review's 25th Anniversary issue, August 6, 1949, which was more than triple the size of a typical issue of the time (180+ pgs vs. 50+ pgs, and so many one-off advertisers it had an index to them). So... Has anyone ever seen this ad, that caused such a big change in Hanff's life? Did she perhaps get the magazine wrong? If so, which magazine was it in, and when?
