Where to post flyers/ advertise for free in Chicago? And in general, how to get hired for a block party?

Where to post flyers/ advertise for free in Chicago? And in general, how to get hired for a block party? Hey hey Chicagoland Mefites.

I'm expanding my little business that I use to pay tuition- I work b-day parties and block parties as a face painter. I'm looking for a way to effectively advertise for free- specific to Chicagoland.

I've been getting an OK response from craigslist, but I want more business. Besides, I understand that people are probably reluctant to hire someone from CL for their kid's party! I posted some flyers in my local Jewel and Dominicks, but no response so far. I checked my local library, but their bulletin board is non-profit only. A friend of mine has offered to help me put together a little website, so that should help, but in the meantime- any other ideas? Specific is good- if you know of a particular store/coffee shop/ whatever in the area that has a bulletin board, what and where is it? Of course, places where people with kids would go are ideal. I'm willing to devote an entire day to driving around and putting up my little flyers, I just don't know where to go. But block party season is rapidly approaching and I'm trying to figure out the most effective way to get that business. For any of you who have organized block parties . . . how did you find your entertainment? Also, when it comes to putting up flyers in grocery stores, what Chicago neighborhoods would you recommend/discourage (i.e. where do people with kids tend to live or not live?) I don't have kids, I have no clue. Oh and suburbs are fair game too. My business seems to be about 50/50 in the burbs and in the city proper.

Thanks everyone, for your infinite wisdom :-) any and all advice on how to improve my little business is welcome.

Marketing a great website before it's copied

Recently I've thought of a great idea for a website which I'm planning on developing soon. I believe the site has the potential of something like YouTube or Facebook.

Due to my paranoia and low budget, I've decided to develop the site myself. I believe no one has the capacity or resources to copy the site for at least a fortnight.

Due to the low budget Im having to resort to spreading the word over the net.

Unfortunetly I cannot reveal what the site is about :( I was just wondering if anyone knows of any descent sites or forums that are pretty general, where I could post my idea? so i can reach as many people as possible within a fortnight.

P.S. Please don't say Youtube or Facebook... lol

Is this the unauthorized practice of law in New York?

Is helping family from New York prepare wills and trusts the "unauthorized practice of law" if I'm an attorney from a different state? I'm an attorney licensed to practice in MA. I have family in NY who wants me to write wills and trusts for them. Can I do so?

I read Judiciary Law Sec. 478 and 484 regarding the unauthorized practice of law and also the rules regarding pro hac vice. There seems to be a gray area between being able to petition the court to represent a client in NY even though you're not an attorney in NY and not being allowed to hold yourself out as an attorney in NY.

I read the rules as saying that a non-attorney or an attorney from another state cannot "advertise" their services in the state of NY without being licensed in NY. However, I am not advertising myself as a NY attorney nor am I trying to get clients from NY.

How is preparing wills and trusts for family in NY different than being admitted pro hac vice (for this case only)? Any NY attorneys want to give me some advice?

Why do hospitals advertise?

What exactly are they selling? I live in a biggish city in the rust belt. We have two major hospitals in this city. Both of them run constant and extensive advertising campaigns with billboards, full-page newspaper ads, and so on, telling us what great hospitals they are. I don't understand why. I'm 40 and have been through a lot of insurance carriers in my life, and in my experience the choice of hospital comes down to:

1. I'm bleeding a lot; which one is closer?

2. The doctor who participates in my insurance has privileges at this one, so I have to go there.

Do many people really have discretion in choosing what hospital to go to? If not, what is the point of these advertising campaigns? What do the hospitals hope to achieve?

Why do companies advertise?

Does advertising work? I can understand advertising a product which is new and novel, but what does, say, Coca-Cola gain from advertising? Are they just afraid not to advertise? At the same time, don't annoying advertisments disparage product use? Do the advertising departments in certain companies just have too much power to allow themselves to be eliminated or reduced?

Specialist websites where I can advertise to sell my working 1973 Sony reel to reel video tape deck?

I just acquired a vintage, fully working Sony reel to reel video tape deck, circa 1973. This deck is from the dawn of the consumer video market.
I have no use for it and would like to sell it. Of course the 1st market to sell it in would be EBay, but I've had less than great results with obscure stuff like this.
Does anyone know of a more topically-appropriate place to advertise this item for sale?
