I'm about to get 2 years of free time starting october where I'm intentionally stretching out my phd because of some funding. I'm kind of looking for a new life-changing "adventure", something totally different to try. Can you provide some suggestions? [more inside]
The world is boring. It needs more buried treasure. What things could I bury as treasure - things with great and lasting value, yet could be obtained cheaply? (Eg, a spirits/wine chest could be inexpensive to buy, but eventually become a treasure worth finding after enough years have passed. Superstar backstage passes are useless as treasure (they expire), but are an example of something of great value that doesn't cost much money to obtain - if you can find a way to obtain them.) How can I assemble epic genuine treasure on a budget? [more inside]

I'm planning on visiting Alaska in June of 2011 with my boyfriend and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for small ship excursions. I hate, hate cruises and have no interest in a big cruise ship package. Looking for something smaller and more adventurous, with a younger crowd. Not exactly sure what I want to do specifically, but glacier hiking and fishing/catching seafood would be definite pluses. I don't know much about Alaska but I'd like to see some of the cooler towns along the way as well. Has anyone had any great small ship experiences in Alaska? By small, I mean anything from 10 people to 100, but just none of those big ship casino-and-canned-entertainment experiences. Thanks!

How do you keep your sense of adventure when you sit in a cubicle and have to pick up the kids at 5 o'clock? I love my wife. I love my kids. I like the fact that my soul-sucking job allows me to use my brain while paying for piano lessons, vacations, and an educational trust. I am not looking to get rid of said wife, kids, or job. What I am looking for is a renewed sense of adventure within my current 'constraints'. [more inside]

Seeking stories of men and women who -- either by way of adventure or by circumstance -- succumbed to the elements after a protracted attempt at survival...
I've read and loved the histories of Sir Robert Falcon Scott, James Kim, George Mallory, S. A. Andrée, et cetera, and now I would like to be pointed towards more stories of men and women who -- either by way of adventure or by circumstance -- succumbed to the elements after a protracted attempt at survival... preferably leaving a rich and well-written-about story. I've recently been gifted a round-the-world plane ticket, and have the cash and time to support maybe three to four months of travel. I've already penned in visits to friends in NE America, Japan, and France, but otherwise am paralysed by choice - there's nowhere in the world that I don't want to see, if that makes sense. Does anyone have any links that might help with planning such an epic trip, or even suggestions for YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY MISS THIS destinations? Other, miscellaneous globetrotting advice is also welcome.

When I was a kid (mid-1980s, early-90s) I was obsessed with these compendiums of Japanese illustration they had where I took art lessons. Most of the art was airbrushed; a lot of hyper-realistic work in the vein of Hajime Sorayama, which I don't mind, but some of it was this cartoony airbrush style I love. In particular there was this cartoon dog who wore a suit which I'd like to find again. I'm not sure what the advertisement was for, but it features a cartoon dog wearing a suit in various situations with a weird cast of characters. On a rollercoaster, etc. i know that is vague, but does anyone know what this is? The style is pretty similar to the boxart for Hudson's Adventure Island. Does anyone know who did the art for that game? Any artists I should check out based on that style?
