Overlanding from Los Angeles to Buenos Aires: tips or recommendations?

In August, my best friend and I (both 20-something guys) begin a 5 month adventure across the Americas. We started to research the trip last September, and have basically scoured the internet since then. Instagram has proved to be a great source to connect with the overlanding community and there's a couple of good blogs out there of people currently doing the trip. Still, we'd still really appreciate if the askmefi community could weigh in. As I start to put together a detailed itinerary I'm beginning to feel overwhelmed by all the details and possibilities. Where to go? What to plan? How much to budget? And, just generally, what level of detail should I plan to? Normally I'd come up with a broad plan in a few days and then wing it but given the dangers, sheer size of this adventure, and the amount of unforgettable places to see I want to really plan it. UNESCO sites, nature, must-see towns and villages... Can anybody help us? [more inside]

Afraid of missing an opportunity - should I stay or should I go?

I was in a long distance relationship UK-Canada and lived with my ex in Canada for just over 6 months on a 1 year working holiday visa. Before I left (and broke up) I applied and was approved for a 2nd working holiday year (the limit is 2 years) which I haven't yet used. The expiry date is coming up very soon, I have to be in Canada for March 1st to use it. The visa can't be cancelled. I have to make a decision as soon as possible. [more inside]

Places to go camping with a 5- and 7-year-old near New Orleans?

My SO's kids are becoming a bigger part of my life, and she and I would like to start taking them on camping trips as a way to have fun, bond, introduce them to the outdoors, and find some precious peace and quiet out away from the roar of the city. We live in New Orleans, Louisiana; what are some good places to take them for weekend camping adventures? [more inside]

Let's Travel Alone...Together

Solo traveling mefites! Have you found active travel tours that tend to learn a little to the younger crowd. I'm not trying to find a singles-ready-to-mingle tour, but would hike with folks who are more excited about the hike than the souvenirs. I'm comfortable traveling solo to most places - but, who wants to go on a safari solo? Ideas for companies or feedback from those who have taken REI-type travel tours would be great! Thanks globe-trotters,

Most of a Sunday "stuck" in San Diego - what should I do?

Next month I have a 10:30pm flight out of San Diego and all my mates are leaving in the morning. What lovely fun thing could I do that I could only do there? Or, never mind me, what would you do if you just had 12 hours in San Diego? [more inside]

What are the best American historic sites east of the Mississippi

My husband and I want to carefully plan a series of American History field trips for our family, to take place over the next 3-6 years. We live in Northern New England and are, ourselves, pretty conversant in US History. Can you help us plan what we should see and -- most importantly -- what order we should see it in? [more inside]

Talk me through water filtration and purification

As I'm spending more and more time on bike trips where there are many long stretches without access to reliable tap water, I'm starting to investigate water filters and purifiers as a supplement/backup solution in case the extra water I carry runs out or spills or whatever. But there are so many kinds, and some of them seem really sketchy, and I'm getting overwhelmed! Can you point me to a good, comprehensive resource on how to choose and use water purifiers and filters? Or can you talk me through a typical real-world use? Take for granted that I'll be using them within the US and am unlikely to be traveling in areas where the natural water supply is seriously contaminated.

1 week vacation, $1000, 1 Adventure

My company offers an employee escape program if you can come up the "best" idea of how to spend the $1000 and extra week vacation. I have a few ideas of what I might want to propose - but would love to see what you think: if you had a week and $1000 - what would be an incredible adventure? Note - most employees who get chosen usually tie in some sort of service program or volunteer efforts, but sky is the limit.

Kingsquest can be cool again.

I need a new quest or adventure, I'd rather like it to be focused on a particular event. I was temporarily obsessed with the idea of tour skating and the 11 cities tour, but it seems it hasn't happened since 1997 so locking in a multi-month preparation in 2012 seems a little optimistic. So I'm looking for other unusual events that I might be able to participate in, or locations where tour skating is still viable. [more inside]

What's a 6month adventure that will pay for itself?

I would like to quit my job and go on a self-sustaining adventure. By self-sustaining, I mean that it would mostly pay for itself, cost very little, or both. I have money saved, but I will need it as a buffer when I return to the real world and look for a job again. For argument's sake, let's say I can put $1500 toward this adventure. My time frame is 2 months to a year. I'm open to anything from being a frieght train hobo to volunteering in a far-away country to flying to Sweden and finding a job washing dishes. [more inside]
