My company offers an employee escape program if you can come up the "best" idea of how to spend the $1000 and extra week vacation. I have a few ideas of what I might want to propose - but would love to see what you think: if you had a week and $1000 - what would be an incredible adventure?
Note - most employees who get chosen usually tie in some sort of service program or volunteer efforts, but sky is the limit.

I need a new quest or adventure, I'd rather like it to be focused on a particular event. I was temporarily obsessed with the idea of tour skating and the
11 cities tour, but it seems it hasn't happened since 1997 so locking in a multi-month preparation in 2012 seems a little optimistic. So I'm looking for other unusual events that I might be able to participate in, or locations where tour skating is still viable.

Some of my siblings are talking about doing the Annapurna Circuit together next year. I've did it a few years back but would love to travel with them - can you recommend something that would provide similar adventure and excitement for them and also be new for me?

I'm wanting to spend a month or so in each of some of the coolest cities of the USA/Europe. I've got a full-time work-from-anywhere-there's-wi-fi job that'll keep me going but still want to keep expenses down. Done something similar? What was your best way to find lodgings?

I'm 35, an attorney, and married with 3 children, and want to move myself and my family to Europe (preferably Germany) for the experience. My preference is to work for the U.S. Government overseas, as that seems the easiest transition, but positions are not easy to come by. Any ideas?

I've recently been gifted a round-the-world plane ticket, and have the cash and time to support maybe three to four months of travel. I've already penned in visits to friends in NE America, Japan, and France, but otherwise am paralysed by choice - there's nowhere in the world that I don't want to see, if that makes sense. Does anyone have any links that might help with planning such an epic trip, or even suggestions for YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY MISS THIS destinations? Other, miscellaneous globetrotting advice is also welcome.

I would like to quit my job and go on a self-sustaining adventure. By self-sustaining, I mean that it would mostly pay for itself, cost very little, or both. I have money saved, but I will need it as a buffer when I return to the real world and look for a job again. For argument's sake, let's say I can put $1500 toward this adventure. My time frame is 2 months to a year. I'm open to anything from being a frieght train hobo to volunteering in a far-away country to flying to Sweden and finding a job washing dishes.

Security Clearance/Foreign Service-filter: I'm thinking of a career in the Foreign Service when I get out of college (T-minus 4 years), which I am just now entering. While metafilter has had
questions about this before, but my situation is am bit different (so I'm hoping the Foreign Service mefites from those threads can chime in). The most important distinction is that I'm looking to be a
Security Engineering Officer, or in some other sort of engineering related role (which falls under "Management" I believe) not a diplomat. Much more after the jump...

This may be a long shot, but does anyone have any travel tips for Cameroon they could share with me? I'm going there for two weeks for work and my boss basically told me "stay in the hotel, it's too dangerous to go travelling around there." I hate the idea of not seeing the country, and I wonder whether this is true, and if so, whether there's some kind of organized tour I could take over the weekend. I'll be based in Douala.
