Snuggie vs. Snuggie for Kids for an 11-year-old? OK, I'm embarrassed about this, but I'm going ahead and hopping on the Snuggie bandwagon for all my immediate family members for Xmas. I'm all set to purchase adult-size Snuggies for my husband and tall 16yo stepson and a Snuggie for Kids for my small 9yo stepdaughter.

It's my 11yo stepdaughter that I'm not sure about. She's somewhere between 4'10" and 5 feet, and I don't want to buy a kid one if it's going to turn out to be too short, but neither do I want to buy an adult one if it's going to be too long and draggy. (Yes, they're mostly for cuddling on the sofa but I fully expect that there'll be snuggied people traipsing around the house at intervals, and I don't want her to trip.)

Anyhoo, I've never actually seen one of the wretched things out of the box so I'm honestly not sure what kind of length I'm dealing with. I'd love input from anyone who has them, particularly short folks who have the adult size.

Tips for strips?

StripClubFilter: The wife and I want to give going to a strip club a chance. I've only been to two or three, and she's never been, so we're relative novices. What do we need to know? We'll be going to the local Spearmint Rhino in Dallas, which is a national chain. From what I can tell, it's a pretty classy joint, but then again, I'm not sure what's classy for strip clubs. We're going because the headliner is a popular adult star, and we figured this was as good a time as any to try it out. We're both in our 20s, married, and comfortable in sexual situations.

A few questions:

Do I bring a wad of singles like we used to do in college the few times I went, or is this a different type of place?

Is going in with a woman lead to a different experience than going in with a group of guys? Different treatment?

Is there any expected dress?

I've only been to relatively skeezy clubs and a few nicer ones, but in Montreal. Is there any sort of strip club etiquette that I should know about? Tipping? Minimum drink orders?

I've agreed that if she (or I, for that matter) start feeling skeeved out, we'll bolt. Any ways to avoid that?

I figure it's a new experience, but like any new situation where I don't know the rules, I like to get advice in advance.

Any other tips/things I haven't thought about for a couple's first joint strip club visit would be much appreciated.

Toy For a Grown-Up Daredevil?

What is a fun, active, motion toy for an adult? I want to get my (adult) cousin something she can play with/on. She likes surfing, skateboarding, and all related feats. Any ideas of an interesting, active type of thing like that? Bonus points if it's unusual...or unusually fun.

Projects for Christmas-weary adults?

Monopoly and decorating cookies aren't interesting enough to woo my relatives away from their naps. What are some fun projects, challenges, and DIY kits the adults in my extended family can do together for entertainment over Christmas week? I'll be spending Christmas with my extended family, which is mostly adults (teenagers through 60ish). We'd like some group activities for when the conversation lulls--preferably, fun things we can do together around a table, tasks that require some creativity or mental challenge. These can be individual tasks we all do at the same time, or things that require group effort.

Things we've enjoyed in the past (but that are getting old):
-carving pumpkins
-gingerbread and card houses, cookie decorating
-sculpting with clay
-working on logic and Microsoft Puzzle Challenge problems

I'd like some more ideas in this vein--things that take up enough mental effort that everyone has something to do if conversation lulls. Bonus points for anything mildly competitive (e.g. highest card tower) or producing a finalized product worth keeping or eating (this bunch likes puzzles and Make-style DIY kits).

Where's the website Startup button?

I want to create a website and need general and specific guidance. I don't want to give the idea away so the description is a little sketchy.
How do I deal with keeping the kids out of the "adult" section? How do I "spread the word"? (to get submissions and readers?; i.e. kickstart) I am considering a WordPress engine and Nearly Free Speech for hosting (at least at the start). Is that reasonable to use? I have not purchased the domain yet.

The website will mostly deal with user submitted documents; I am not really sure I know how to get the submissions: users scan things and email or upload the files. Should I allow submissions to me snail mailed in and I scan them? (I don't want to be required to return them, I think)

I know that some of these things will end up being the "adults only" type (I'm OK with that), but I want to keep the kiddies out of there. Require a registration for that section? What qualifications do I ask for?

Is it reasonable/acceptable/advisable to accept PayPal donations for upkeep? What about advertising? what's the best way? (I don't want to go with the obnoxious popups and horrific banners if I can help it)

Is it possible to make a buck or two if it is popular? I'm not looking to make a real killing, mostly pay for the effort and costs.

How does one select and "promote" moderators that will keep in line with the original concept of the site?

When do I bust the cherry and put it on MeTa's Projects section?

What have I not covered??

Anyone "volunteer" to answer specific questions after I get started?

What is the PayPal of the adult industry?

Adult Website Filter: Which payment processor should I use to sell advertising space on my porn website? I'm going to launch a little project of mine which is a porn website. I won't go into detail about what it does, but it's basically a portal site for advertisers to place banner ads to their websites. I want to be able to accept payment from the advertisers.

I would normally use PayPal for such a thing, but as far as I can tell, PayPal will not allow any transactions from an adult website, no matter what they're for. Is this true? If so, can you recommend another good payment processor which will allow adult content? Note that I am not selling adult content; I am only selling advertising space which will contain adult content.

I have heard that CCBill is good, but their fees are high (starting at 14.5%), and I don't want the upfront cost of a full merchant account.

Why do male porn stars wear socks and shoes?

Why do male porn actors so often wear socks and shoes while otherwise naked in adult movies? It's true that high heels are prevalent among the females but at least one could argue there's some aesthetic point to that. The guys' choice of footwear, meanwhile, is nearly always awful. Is there a practical or cultural reason for the men wearing socks, shoes and sometimes hats and sunglasses?

How Do I Promote My YA Fantasy Novel?

I want to promote my Young Adult fantasy novel about Morgan le Fay on the web. The biggest audience should be young women and libraries; Wiccans, medieval re-enactors and King Arthur fans would dig it, too (I hope).

How can I best promote the book myself? What sites and blogs should I contact? Are author's tours effective? What should I definitely put my efforts into and what's not worth my time? I've written a fantasy novel about the childhood of Morgan le Fay which is coming out next year. My publisher probably doesn't have huge resources for promoting the book, and I want to do my part.

I've thought of doing a virtual author's tour, contacting blogs and websites for (a) young adult readers (b) Wiccans (c) medieval fans (d) King Arthur fans. What are the blogs and websites I shouldn't miss?

Also, here in Canada, publishers can get grant money to send authors on real live book tours. If I hit four or five major cities, how can I get the maximum buzz out of being physically there? It's not worth traveling to Calgary to sell ten books, unless I can leverage that somehow into radio interviews or ... what?

I'll work up some sort of website about the book and about Morgan le Fay, of course. What sort of content might be the most interesting to readers?

What have I missed?

Adult ADHD questions

Adult ADHD newbie has lots of questions for you. I have just been diagnosed with ADHD, including the H even though I am a couch potato. I am a geek girl in my early thirties.
I have suffered from depression and anxiety in an almost cyclic fashion forever, and have been seeing a psychologist and taking antidepessants for about two years. We have ruled out other "cyclic" diagnoses such as bipolar, etc. and it seems that while I cope and compensate very well for the adhd, after a certain period of time I just can't anymore. I hadn't considered adhd previously, but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. I am presently off meds due to the testing for adhd. I live in europe in a country with fairly open attitudes to this sort of stuff, and am being offered meds as well as other support, and have my first meeting about it with my dr. next week. I don't know what to ask about?

I have been trying to combat my "stress" by simplifying my life, doing calm things, not multitasking, and so on, but it sounds like that might be the worst thing for me?

Am I likely to be able to study now? The neuro-testing says I am not as dumb as I have previously thought, so I would like to try again. Anyone with experience of that?

I want to try meds but do you have other advice? Hydration, fishoil, b-vitamins etc? Can these be combined with stimulants when I get them?

Will treating this help me with follow-through or willpower? I want to work out, I really do, and I want to do the vacuuming, really, I just never actually do. Same goes for really wanting not to take both of the last pieces of cake. Is this the impulse aspect?

So that's the background, and a bunch of questions. Advice and real life tips please.
What is there that I don't even know to ask about?

Gifts of an "Adult" Nature

What kind of stuff does a 20-something "grown-up" not know he needs/wants? No surprise, my boyfriend's birthday is coming up. He's turning 27, and his parents have been needling him to add things to his wishlist. Gifts are a big deal in his family, and the Amazon wishlist has been a crucial part of that for years. In the past, his list was populated almost exclusively by video games and the occasional movie, but lately, he's been trying to move towards a more grown-up selection. Well, that's super, but when he sits down to try to add "grown-up" stuff to his wishlist, he gets this panicked, "deer in the headlights" expression. I know there are plenty of things he likes/wants, but he has no idea where to start.

Him: scruffy, quiet, socially-capable, 27-ish, physicist

Likes: adventure/RPG video games, reading political and science blogs, puzzles (a la MIT Mystery Hunt), food (eating, not cooking), and Philip Seymour Hoffman films

Dislikes: mushrooms, Will Ferrell movies

Mostly clueless about: fashion, cars, power tools, professional sports, fine wine/booze, and any music other than classical or showtunes

Clearly, he's not a guy's guy, and I've had little luck finding a "manly, but not too manly" guide that wasn't just all gadgets. We'd love to point his family in the right direction, but with the lone exception of an iPhone, his wishlist looks about the same as when he was 14 (video games and Star Trek). He doesn't want to be viewed as the eternal teenager, so what do you want/need when you're "all growed up"?

A friend of mine is thinking of moving out to Miami, and is wondering about job opportunities for working with clients who have developmental disabilities in an adult foster care environment.
[AdultFilter] Recommendations for fantasy adult films [NSFW] Any recommendations for fantasy adult films? or websites?
By fantasy I mean the characters are wearing costumes/makeup depicting fantasy characters...it could be the 3 little pigglets where the girls are wearing pig noses, or fairy tale movies, or sci fi movies or any "fantasy" theme, but with an adult twist (wink)

NSFW question about adult films... I have noticed a very weird think in some adult films (porn). And of course I've not seen this in ALL adult films, but I've seen it in enough to find a pattern.

Several of the films I've seen, especially the more high budget Vivid stuff from the 80's, the curse words are muted out, the audio goes to silence if someone says a bad word like shit, fuck, etc.

It's very confusing...in a XXX movie why would they worry about language? I at first thought it was just a flub in the audio track, but have noticed that it always happens around curse words, and if you ONLY listened to the dialogue of these movies, it's very PG rated.

Any ideas why this would be?

Please introduce me to your field of study (or work) in a way that one can experience This will be an odd question, but please humor my inner geek.

I studied a lot of biology (undergrad, PhD, and then taught uni bio courses for a few years). Looking back, some of the most incredible moments for me regarding my particular field were the experiences coupled with studying the material. For example, not just reading about physiology and anatomy, but when taking or teaching such a course, it was actually dissecting and studying the (shark, mink, human cadaver)– it was the experience that made it spring to life/along with teaching me the material. Another example was spending time looking at animal or human bones, or taking a behavior of zoo animal course where you learn about the behavior of the animals and walk around and look at them at the zoo.

I consider myself almost borderline illiterate when it comes to other fields but everything else fascinates me. Can you introduce me to your field of study (if you completed a BA or almost have done so, you are the expert) or your job if it is technical, can you introduce an outsider to your field? What could I do that would introduce me to your field – it be great if it is interesting, representative, and accessible and involves an experience.

You may feel that for your particular field, a person needs to read about it – that is okay too if you want to throw down the title of a few journal articles or one topic in a textbook – there were moments that I learned about biology, and did not appreciate it until I read a couple journal articles, so I understand that too, although primarily I am looking to experience these things.

So please hive mind introduce to your field.

You never write ...you never call

..Advice please? My grown stepchildren NEVER invite us to their houses...NEVER I am a significant other..and have been for going on ten years. I have no children of my own. My S.O. has three grown children. One was married last year and the other two have committed relationships (they also have significant others). For ten years I have hosted zillions of functions at our house. Birthdays and holidays out the ying yang. It has been expensive and a lot of work. A whole new year of holidays is looming...but I am very very tired of hosting. Recently my s.o.'s daughter bought a house. She has not yet invited us over to see the place!! My s.o's children seldom call and if they do it is usually because they want something (for example the daughter needed a small loan to get into the house).
It is clear that these adult children are very busy like all people in their 30's are...but can you tell me what you would do in my place? I try not to complain about these youngsters..but I have noticed that all my hosting has not made them any closer to me...and that all they seem to care about is presents and money. They honestly don't seem to give a fig about us. Advice?

Do daddy's girls own a negotiation power that I do not?

30 years after my father is gone, I wonder what intangibles he denied me. How do I get a sneak peak into the world of a daddy‘s girl? I‘m a 33 year old woman, the only child, and my father left the family when I was 3. I would say I turned out very well in life, all things considered, and I never cared about how not having an active father took something qualitatively from a life of a girl/woman who otherwise got lots of love from her mother and other family members. Until pretty much now, as I start raising question as to why I failed to create family of my own, which has been my desire since my teenage years. By observing other people’s dating-courtship-getting married transitions, I cannot escape thinking that in most of these successful cases, women had negotiation power that I did not.

My family did not condition me to dislike men: I quite like them. But I was raised with this sense of partially removed security where I was constantly aware that if I get in trouble, there will be no one to bail me out. This successfully kept me out of trouble. But it kept me out of marriage, too!

I had two long term serious relationships: both ended at the point where decision needed to be taken whether there is susbtantial future to them or not. In both, men had expressed confidence that they had found in me what they had been looking for for a long time. Apparently, those qualities in me were not enough, and I tend to believe it was because of my lack of the said “negotiation power”. I received a good education, but I am by no means rich, I live in a foreign country which I came for my phd to (hence lacking social support structures). And at some level I harbor this idea that having a strong father to step in (or at least the idea/threat of him stepping in) would have meant a different outcome in my relationships with men.

Am I very much off-base in my thinking? Does the father factor have such real significance? (On my side, I certainly felt pressure to make sure my behavior does not call for the man’s parents’ disapproval, especially in the second case where parents lived in my new country, and the father came off as a resourceful, powerful, controlling and intimidating personality.)

And more importantly, how do I regain what was never part of my informal education as a father’s daughter? Do you have an experience to share? A book recommendation? Would you advice to try to avoid revealing that father factor is non-existent early in dating process, before they get to know me better?

I'm old and play the violin, ok?

What are some resources and events for adult amateur classical musicians? I'm a late starter adult fiddle player/violinist. I have a degree in music in a different instrument (double bass) but started fiddle in my 20s and studying classical violin in tandem with fiddle in the last 2 years.

What festivals, camps, workshops and the like would be open for adults? What is the best way to get a great teacher to take you seriously as someone who is seriously interested in getting to the best playing level they can in the midst of living their life?

This is one thing I know about but I'm wondering what else is available?
http://www.applehill.org/index.htm

I'll be located in Boston, for whatever that's worth. If there are any violin teachers in the area you think might work, I'd be interested in hearing that too.

Adult ESL fun activities, for groups and especially for private students. I'm starting to teach some adult English classes, and I have my first private student tomorrow morning, and I'd love some suggestions of either fun things to do with a class to spur on conversation or fun things to do with a private student for the same goal.

Suggestions are particularly appreciated for beginning to intermediate students.

Thanks!

(Classes are in general bunches of austrians, and my private student is Korean [and future private students will likely also be Korean])

How do I teach an adult to ride a bicycle? I have never taught anyone about bicycle riding, and it's been long enough since I learned that it just feels like instinct to me. Girlfriend has been asking about learning to ride for awhile now, so we're going to give it a go when the weather warms up a bit.

I need some advice on how to pull this off. We're about the same height, so I was going to just drop the seat on my commuter and use that to teach - bad idea? Should I buy her a cheap woman's cruiser or something? Adult training wheels? How do I even go about teaching someone this skill?

Looking for storage ideas for bedroom toys I'm trying to find a small box (I think) for storage of personal bedroom items. The SO and I have a small collection of things we keep in a large nightstand drawer, but with a little one becoming more mobile I'm looking for some sort of shoeboxish size box to store them in (roughly 10"long x 7"wide x 3"deep). I was thinking this would be a funny valentines gift for my SO also, so maybe a frilly, decorated box.

So two questions:

Where would one find a box like this? I'm going to swing by Cost Plus, but I'm at a loss as to where else to look. I'm in the Sacramento, CA area and I need it for valentines, so online might not work.

Do you have other ideas for storage of said "bedroom items?"

I'm having pervasive sexual thoughts. How do I make them stop? (NSFW) I'm a 30 year old male. I've only had one sexual relationship in my life. I look at porn almost everyday, and have a large selection of porn mags.

Recently, whenever I see a woman who is even a little attractive, I start having thoughts of myself and the woman having sex. I can't seem to stop these thoughts.

I've got an appointment with my therapist next week, but what can I do in the interim to make these thoughts less pervasive?

The cat's name might have been "Barney"

Help me find this book I read as a kid. I remember a fair amount of it, but I just can't get the right Google combination to find it. I believe the main character's name was Jesse. He lived in New York City. These are the two anecdotes I remember in particular:

There was a photoshoot that was happening in Jesse's house, for a dollhouse. It was supposed to be raining in the photo, but they couldn't get the rain machine to work, so Jesse's father suggested painting the windows with (mineral oil? something) to make it look like it was raining on film. The distinct line I remember is that Jesse was not supposed to say anything during the shoot, but when they asked if anyone had a paintbrush, he said "I've got one".

There was a girl (in his building? that he saw on the subway quite often?) named Veronica. She would always talk about how her cat was half-Persian, half-Siamese, half-whatever, and half-something-or-other. Eventually Jesse calls her on it, saying "if that's the case, then you have two cats!", and she gets all upset and embarrassed and all that.

So I've tried Googling all sorts of different combinations of the facts I remember and it seems like all I get are Veronica Mars sites.

Please help!

Adult literacy materials?

What books could you recommend that might help a slightly mentally challenged adult start learning to read? I'm asking this on behalf of my mother. She knows a young man who's about 25 years old, but cannot read. Although you cannot tell at first impression, he is slightly developmentally disabled. Unfortuantely, neither I nor she knows the exact nature of his disability.

The man asked my mom if she knew of any way he might be able to learn to read. She's already recommended people he speak to, and programs he might consider, etc... but she'd like to give him a gift. And that gift would be some books that might help him to begin learning how to read.

The hard part is finding books that
a) don't already require you to be able to read
b) aren't babyish, cartoonish, or otherwise childish-looking (he is sensitive about this)

The man has no computer access. He probably has access to a CD player. He may or may not have a literate adult to help him go through the materials.

Can anybody recommend any books (or books with a CD companion, for example) that might fit the bill?

Much appreciated! This is so much better than taking a stab in the dark on Amazon!
