I need great, imaginative, appealing names for black dogs! A friend operates a rescue organization for dogs and cats, and mentioned how hard it is to find homes for black dogs (see Black Dog Syndrome)... and since I was already helping her come up with names, I thought I'd come up with a special list of Black Dog names that are perhaps evocative of personality types, and that might inspire interest so that potential adopters will maybe find their curiosity/sense of whimsy piqued and stop to at least read a description on the website, instead of just passing by any photo of a black dog. Some specific considerations inside... [more inside]

I've been applying to adopt a dog in Massachusetts for about a year. I live in a tenant-at-will apartment, so they won't give me one. My situation is such that I rent from a friend, his elderly aunt lives downstairs and I look after her, and she would love to have the companionship of a dog during the day when I'm at work. But it seems I can't have one, even though my landlady has given me the go ahead. She is deaf and partially blind, but able to play with a dog. I read the post about dogs being euthanized in Georgia (May 11, MeFi) Maybe these people should advertise in other states. I'd be happy to pay the transportation fee for a long-life friend. I don't want to buy one from a breeder, because that's a waste. I want a nice, friendly pooch, I don't care what it looks like, just that he's in my lap in the evenings when I'm watching TV, and an inspiration to get me up early in the mornings for the morning and evening pee, happily clutching my plastic bag to pick up the poo. Anyone in Massachusetts have any ideas?

Do you have experience using a crate for a puppy? What did you feel the pros/cons were? Anything in particular we should know if we get one?
Possibly pertinent details: We are hoping to get a puppy next week. We're getting it from a pound/adoption agency (Humane Society or similar), and it will probably be a male, medium-sized mutt of some sort. This will be the only dog in the household (at least for a while). We both work away from the house, but one of us generally spends a few hours at home in the middle of the day. We've had dogs before but have never used a crate.

My roommate and I adopted a dog about two weeks ago. He's a submissive/excited urinator. When I get home from school, if I so much as look at him, there's pee everywhere. Same thing with scolding--he does something bad, I'm all "no, that was bad," and he's all "okay, have some of my urine!"
I've been told that the best way to deal with this is just to wait, but if there's something to expedite the process, I'm all ears. (More about our training methods inside.) [more inside]
