I might finally come to be worth something to society! Maybe...?

Hi Mefites. I'll be starting an online medical coding and billing course in January ( given by the AAPC), after graduating from a relatively well respected state school with a psychology BA in May and finding out far too late in the game that it would leave me with nil in terms of job prospects. After building up quite a bit of credit card debt and deciding that man cannot live on Hulu and Facebook alone, as I've been doing for six months, I decided to look into opportunities that required relatively little training to get started with, and happened upon medical billing, something that seems to fit me quite well. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however, because no amount of Googling seems to give me a clear sense of my path once the course is over. Help? [more inside]

How to administrate "photos with Santa" as painlessly as possible.

ch-ch-ch-changes: out with the old, in with the new employees

I run a small-scale but pretty profitable business (5 employees). Entertainment agency. I'm very fortunate to both love my job and really really like the people who work for me. I feel positive about our company and the work we do. We're growing all the time. One of them - the administrative lynch-pin/office manager/keeper of all knowledge is moving abroad to join her long-distance boyfriend. I'm gutted and feel she's going to be really hard to replace. Can you help me? [more inside]

How should I deal with a micro-managing boss?

Hello everybody, I recently got a promotion, and although my subordinates abide by the rules, I often find my boss getting into the details of what I do. Whenever I try to confront him, he sidesteps the issue or he tells me not to make a big deal out of petty things. I really love my boss and admire him because he is very kind, refined, and respectful. He also built the company from the ground up all by himself (which might explain why he feels he needs to be so detail-oriented), but his micro-managing is beginning to affect how I work. The main reason I feel depressed is because I feel I could do a great job (being the perfectionist that I am) if I had the chance to do my work without him intervening so much. So, how should I deal with my micro-managing boss without antagonizing/upsetting him?

Change of career: Going into the health care administration field ??

I might need to go back to work and I am thinking about a career change. I have held business analysts/planner positions in retail but while I enjoy the actual work, i don't enjoy the purpose/ field. Working retail is starting to feel a bit pointless, trying to sell more stuff to people all the time. I am interested in taking my skills to a different field. Maybe a similar job but with a different goal. Namely healthcare administration could be what I am looking for. I'd would want to work for patient advocacy groups or in the government (ie: not trying to make an extra buck to private insurance). But to do that I figure I need to understand how the private system works too. [more inside]

new job, new dynamic

I will be starting a senior administrative role at a university. I was doing administration with supervisory responsibilities up until this point, but this is a big step up for me. I don't doubt that I can do it, but I'm feeling a bit uncertain about a few things. I need pointers or resources on "getting your act together" to operate at this level. [more inside]

How to centralize adminsitration of multiple Unix machines (and others)?

I'm curious as to what are the current "best practices" when it comes to centralized administration of a network of Unix (primarily Linux, but not necessarily so) machines? Essentially, what is the equivalent of Active Directory for a network with one or more Unix hosts? The immediate answer I come up with would be something like OpenLDAP plus PAM but what I'm looking for is the suite of tools (GUI and CLI apps) for managing the directory, deploying software, centralizing sign-on and security, managing printers, etc. In a perfect world, I would like to centralize administration of Windows, Unix, and OS X machines via a single directory service, though I imagine such a solution would be expensive and/or cumbersome if it even existed. Or is this something Samba 4 will do?
