Hello everybody,
I recently got a promotion, and although my subordinates abide by the rules, I often find my boss getting into the details of what I do. Whenever I try to confront him, he sidesteps the issue or he tells me not to make a big deal out of petty things. I really love my boss and admire him because he is very kind, refined, and respectful. He also built the company from the ground up all by himself (which might explain why he feels he needs to be so detail-oriented), but his micro-managing is beginning to affect how I work. The main reason I feel depressed is because I feel I could do a great job (being the perfectionist that I am) if I had the chance to do my work without him intervening so much. So, how should I deal with my micro-managing boss without antagonizing/upsetting him?

I might need to go back to work and I am thinking about a career change. I have held business analysts/planner positions in retail but while I enjoy the actual work, i don't enjoy the purpose/ field. Working retail is starting to feel a bit pointless, trying to sell more stuff to people all the time.
I am interested in taking my skills to a different field. Maybe a similar job but with a different goal. Namely healthcare administration could be what I am looking for. I'd would want to work for patient advocacy groups or in the government (ie: not trying to make an extra buck to private insurance). But to do that I figure I need to understand how the private system works too.

I will be starting a senior administrative role at a university. I was doing administration with supervisory responsibilities up until this point, but this is a big step up for me. I don't doubt that I can do it, but I'm feeling a bit uncertain about a few things. I need pointers or resources on "getting your act together" to operate at this level.

I'm curious as to what are the current "best practices" when it comes to centralized administration of a network of Unix (primarily Linux, but not necessarily so) machines? Essentially, what is the equivalent of Active Directory for a network with one or more Unix hosts? The immediate answer I come up with would be something like
OpenLDAP plus PAM but what I'm looking for is the suite of tools (GUI and CLI apps) for managing the directory, deploying software, centralizing sign-on and security, managing printers, etc.
In a perfect world, I would like to centralize administration of Windows, Unix, and OS X machines via a single directory service, though I imagine such a solution would be expensive and/or cumbersome if it even existed. Or is this something
Samba 4 will do?
