How to bypass my provider's annoying "site not found" screen?

How to bypass my provider's annoying "site not found" screen? I used to be able to just type in a domain name in the address bar, like "metafilter", hit return, and the browser would automatically load "metafilter.<strong>com</strong>". But lately, Optimum Online is interfering with that handy shortcut by displaying a search result screen (to show me ads, I'm sure) saying "the site cannot be found" and a screen full of search results, usually with metafilter.com listed right at the very top. How do they do this? More to the point, how do I get the old behavior back?

Why won't firefox (always) react to the address bar?

Sometimes the address bar in firefox won't respond when I type in it. How come? Occasionally during a browsing session, when I try typing something into the address bar, firefox simply won't notice - it doesn't matter if it's www.google.com, a bookmark shortcut, or anything, the browser just doesn't react when I hit enter. I can still do anything else - click on links, open a bookmark by going through the bookmarks toolbar, or whatever, and if I open a new (concurrent) instance of firefox the address bar will work again, but it never comes back in the original instance. Anybody seen this before, or know how to fix it?

Fixing the in-law's IE 6.0 - please help.

Computing at the in-laws .... Since they don't know what their ISP password is, I'm forced to do all my web work (I'm telecommuting today) using their Windows machine. The central vagary I'm confronted with is that they have somehow let IE 6.0 for Windows XP become overrun from one of those "Do you want to set your homepage to ...?" sites, and not only has it installed itself as their homepage, but anytime you put a URL in the address bar that's not proceeded by an http:// or www., it redirects you to their shitty find4u.net page. I've changed the homepage to Google, but how can I liberate the address bar?
