I am a guy who would like to stop watching porn (watch on the internet). I don't judge others who watch it but it bothers me that I do. I don't do it often but porn has in some way been in my life since high school and now that I am married and in my late 30s, I still drift over to sites. (Frequency, I would say is once every few weeks)...I need to use my computer so getting rid of it is not currently available as an option. I finally admitted it to my wife because I wanted to stop and to my surprise, she has loved me and wants to support me anyway. Any tricks on stopping this habit, or book/web site recommendations are appreciated. I figure dropping ice cubes down my shorts would be a start!

Due to years of my mother’s mental illness, dependency on prescription medication, and wildly varying levels lying leading to all sort of trust issues, I am a 30-year old woman with a very complicated relationship with my aging mom. I feel more than a little guilt and sadness about this, and authentically would like to improve our relationship. There are, of course complications. [more inside]

Someone near to me has recently recognised, and begun to address, a serious problem with debt. The debt is not a result of extravagant spending; it seems to stem from persistently bad decisions about consumer credit, and a habit of repaying loans with other loans.
So... once the debt has been consolidated and the credit cards have been destroyed, what measures can this person take to ensure they never, ever get into debt again? Is it possible to voluntarily ban oneself from being offered credit?
The person is in Australia.

You could call me an alcoholic in that I have drunk nearly every day for ten years. I am 34 years old. I am thin and healthy looking. Because I’m asking in part for medical advice I want to be very specific about the amount I drink.

How do I go cold turkey? Several months ago I had an injury and was prescribed pain killers (synthetic opoid, medium dosage). The injury is mostly healed and although I still have some pain it's at a level I can probably live with until I'm fully healed. But now I find that I'm addicted to the pain medicine. When I stop taking it, within 24 hours I'm itching and twitching so much that I have to start taking it again. I've decided not to prolong the situation and pick a suitable time to just stop taking it. But I'm nervous about the process and the risks involved. How do I go about setting up a time and place to go through withdrawal? How long will it take, what will it be like? I want to handle it myself, with help from friends and family. I'm looking for pointers to websites, personal stories, anything that can help me prepare for going through this.

My friend has gone from an occasional cocaine user to a regular (daily) user. As someone who has experimented with drugs, I never felt comfortable getting overly moralistic with her about her cocaine use, even though it always bothered me. But she's gotten to the point where she is snorting a few times an hour every night and almost all weekend. [more inside]

Marijuana is said to have the potential for psychological addiction. I just started using it, and I'm hyper-paranoid about such things (even when not high!), so I'm wondering about this. Has anyone here struggled with this? How do you tell the difference between "psychological addiction", and just wanting to do something fun, because it's fun? Is psychological addiction a bunch of anti-drug scaremongering? How do you tell if you're starting to become addicted?

I think one of my close friends has developed a serious drug addiction. They used to be an active, hard-working, happy person, but in the last couple of months they are reluctant to socialize, ended all outside commitments, are barely sleeping, have seriously neglected their hygiene, and I just found out they have stolen thousands of dollars from their work, at which they are well paid, in the last month. I thought it was 'just' depression, but the money seems to point to something worse and there is a history of casually using hard drugs. They don't seem to want help, so will it do any good if I try? Does anyone have any experience with interventions, or is that just something people do on television?
