What to do in or near Fort Collins, CO

I'll be in Fort Collins for the next week and a half, which means I'll have a free weekend (6/25-26). I'm alone, and I'm not a beer fan, so brewery tours are not advised. I have a rental car, so I can travel a bit. Any suggestions for fun things to do?

Breaking down systems of oppression, high school edition

I often have the opportunity to talk about sexism, gender issues, racism and other forms of oppression with groups of high school students while working as an outdoor educator. So cool! I've got a diversity handbook with activities, but they're starting to feel a bit dated. Instead of dining out, where can we go to get out?

We're a middle-aged couple who just want to get out of the house for a change. This means we eat out at the local restaurants. It's getting a bit dull and truly, I'm tired of looking at the menu and feeling sad about all the foods I shouldn't eat. Dating in New York City, places to go, things to see and do

Sometimes people invite me on a first or second date and then insist that I suggest a place to go or a thing to do. What are some fun/interesting/free/inexpensive things to do in Brooklyn and Manhattan south of ...say the 70s east or west side? Budget conscious is important because the concept of "who invited" gets murky in this situation, and I make sure to always be prepared to pay for anything I have suggested. So pizza suggestions are good. Steaks are not. [more inside]

When to push your kids, when to let them give up?

My daughter (7 years old) is constantly begging us to let her try new extracurricular activities -- dance, ice-skaing, T-ball, soccer. These activities are not cheap. However, she displays a strong propensity to quit and sulk at the first sign of not being an expert during the first go-round and obstinately demands to abandon the activity, saying she "hates" it. Given that some of these activities represent a significant non-refundable investment, when do you force your kids to keep going and when do you cut bait? [more inside]

My niece, a 15-year-old who'll be on her first trip outside the US, is visiting us in London in mid June. My wife and I will have lots of time to spend with her doing tourist things as well as just hanging out, and her grandparents will also be here for part of the time, but she'll be on her own for portions of a few days. C'mon, get happy

I am in a pretty emotionally difficult time in my life. (I'm in the midst of a season of high stakes interviews, and my finances right now are rather limited.) I've got access to professional help, so I'm all covered there, but I think it would be helpful to have a list that I can turn to on a regular basis of easy to do things that are 1) free or very low cost, 2) outside my apartment, and 3) schedule-independent* to help me keep my spirits up during this difficult time.
