Hi all. I'm tutoring some students for the ACT, and wanted to find some good selections of prose fiction and humanities non-fiction to give them a sense of what they can expect on the reading section of the test. I had lots of ideas for prose fiction, but many seemed to involve something potentially confusing and controversial (abortion in Hills Like White Elephants, Tourette's Syndrome in Motherless Brooklyn, intersex identity in Middlesex) and most of the humanities writing I'm familiar with is high-level academic scholarship that is probably too dense for high school students. The daughter of a friend has taken the ACT four times trying to reach a score of 24. Her initial score was a 12. She did some self-preparation the second and third times and brought her score up to 19. Before taking the test for the fourth time she saw a tutor and brought her score up to 24.
The ACT people want to disallow the last score because they aren't comfortable with the degree to which her score improved. [more inside]

Our son, who's in eighth grade, is scheduled to take the SAT this Saturday but he's not enthusiastic at all. I gave him a review book and he said he didn't know how to do many of the problems.
We scheduled him for the test at the urging of his principal who believes he can qualify for the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) because he got a perfect score just recently on an ACT exam and she knows my son quite well because it's a very small grade school.
I don't think he has much to lose and a lot to gain but I think he's just plain petrified
of taking the test and would skip it if we let him. That however would greatly disappoint my wife, me, and the principal.
Any words of wisdom you can offer?

Aside from whether I should or why I should care what address I give a credit card company or bank, I am wondering whether the Patriot Act actually does allow consumers to give companies a business street address. It appears so but I'm no legal whiz so I'm looking for some answers out there. [more inside]

I am sort of familiar with CBT and ACT. I like the concepts of both, but I find when I would use CBT I would get into a shouting match with myself. I am thinking ACT would be better for myself, but I want to have confident thoughts also through CBT. I was wondering if anyone had luck intertwining both? IF you can mix both? I may need to look more into the two. I do not know all the techniques yet, but just wanted to hear some opinions. Thanks

Recently I was reading a book by Joseph Campbell called "The Hero with a Thousand Faces
" which goes into how the "mono-myth
" pattern serves as the underlying structure for most Western movies (think Star Wars, The Matrix, ...). I would love to learn more about alternative story arcs and dramatic structures (like the famous three-act structure), with examples from famous films.
Any comprehensive resources, blogs, articles, anything?

Act! database vs. Daylite?
I used Act forever & loved the fact i could keep notes per company & then look up companies by Co. name, first name, last name, city, state, or other custom tag i classified them as.
I used ACT when i had my PC.... but for the past 3 years i've been on a Macbook Pro and only using Daylite... which i hate. I can't look up by anything other than Company name or contact name....
I need a new database contact program that is similar to ACT in the regards of how I can look up each company & allowing me under notes (or something) to keep track of my conversations. I'd also like it to sync up with my iphone 5. [more inside]

I am a technology specialist for a large public school district. In my school, I am a "prep" teacher. Classes come to me, the teacher leaves, and I have them for 50 minutes. Last year, for various reasons, I developed a phobia of being alone in charge of 25-30 kids by myself. I kept seeing danger to them and being unable to help.
I took a leave from the middle of April through the end of the year. I tried to get an ELL position; that's my other license. ELL is small group and/or co-teaching and I would be just fine returning to it. [more inside]

I've been using ACT 2000 and just upgraded to Sage ACT 2011, however, I don't see the "SideACT" function which I used a lot to maintain to-do lists.
Does Sage ACT 2011 have SideACT or something similar?

I'm interested in starting an after-school ACT test prep program for the high school students that I work with.
I'm not an educator, so I don't have a clue where to start. What are the best techniques, from start to finish to organizing and operating a successful group test preparation workshop? How can I help my students acquire the techniques they need to do well on the test? [more inside]

I live in Oregon, and our elections are all vote-by-mail. In an effort to get out the vote, there are organizations (like ACT) accepting ballots all over Portland. There's a lone man with a Kerry sign outside my apartment complex accepting ballots who seems to have no organizational affiliation whatsoever. Some time ago I saw two male gymnasts on a late night talk show (I think) who did a routine where they lifted eachother and twisted their bodies in amazing ways -- all at EXTREMELY slow speed. Anyone know who these guys are?
