I've been filling some of my idle time by playing Bastion (
previously), and have fallen in love with the
soundtrack. I'm pretty sure I remember some thematically similar stuff in Firefly, as well, for what that's worth. The Bastion team have categorized it as "acoustic frontier trip-hop," but since that's a genre that they pretty much just made up, I was hoping that my fellow AskMe folks could point me at other similar music. Special snowflake details after the break.

Is Tracy Chapman's guitar in
this video (best shots are in the first 10 seconds) a custom jobbie, or is an acoustic with electric pickups a thing that can be bought off the rack?

What other songs are like
Ross' Concert by Jeff Danna?
Instrumental, preferably acoustic with delight, energy and ideally a similarly blissful build and crescendo? Ideally I'm after pop-song length pieces. I'm not against vocals - the important thing is finding similar moods, expressiveness and complexity.

Using Youtube-to-MP3 tools found online, I've recently started putting some of my favorite acoustic covers of popular music on my iPod. Some of these favorites are within, along with other popular examples of the stripped-down cover trend, but I would appreciate discovering yours as well.

Calling all guitar players: Looking for popular songs that can easily be played and sung by a single person with an acoustic guitar without losing too much. Basically, the kind of songs you can put in a set list where people's reactions are to immediately say, "Hey, I really like that song," followed immediately by "and hey, that sounds pretty close to the original too!"
Also, very important: Any song should be playable by a *
mediocre* guitar player.

LongShotFilter: I once was in a music store in Northern California and while waiting for a friend I picked up a mini acoustic guitar which was selling for around $75-150 (I think) in order to pass the time. To my great surprise, I loved the feel and sound of this cheap small guitar, and would have bought it at the time but was broke. Now I need to find it again...

Suggestions for acoustic music venues in New Orleans? I'll be visiting NOLA in a couple of weeks and would appreciate some advice about likely spots to hear live music. My tastes run to acoustic Americana, a touch of twang okay, bluesy too, and I already have a basic notion of the more touristy Dixieland scene from previous visits (all of them pre-Katrina). As examples of my interests I would mention the Nawlins-based musicians
Mary Gauthier and
Anders Osborne (or at least his folkier side). Thanks!

I've just discovered The Mountain Goats (John Darnielle) courtesy of
Large Hearted Boy and some positive online reviews. I love the fact that he used to record albums into a boom box, and has a voice and singing style that are quirky but oddly compelling. Any other recommendations for acoustic indie lo-fi folk (if that is a category)?
