on short notice. Most is easily pulled off old statements, but how do I come up with a solid fair market valuation for household/personal goods? It's peak tax season, so impossible to get an fast answer from an accountant. The only obvious calculator

Looking for tips on dealing with the defense department acquisitions system. Basically, I am preparing taxes for a new LLC that expects to land some government contracts, and they are asking me about how best to deal with DFARS. None of my accounting connections knows anything about this. Should I just refer them to a D.C. based CPA who has experience, or is it not a big deal?

Is there an expense reporting app that's flexible, handy, and will help me finish next year's taxes quickly and easily? I know about excel, quicken, and various financial transaction apps, but what if I drive 100 miles to a tech conference and want to note my mileage? And what if I'm out entertaining clients and I want to pop onto my iPhone to note the total bill for the evening (before I forget the next day to open excel). Are there any web-based flexible apps for doing all the expense reporting you might need for a small business' bookkeeping needs?

I am contemplating on pursuing a Master's degree in Accounting. I am hoping to eventually be a CFO of a public company one day, and it seems having a CPA is better than spending additional year or two getting an MBA in Finance or something. I've been struggling to find accounting software, online or PC/Mac based (either will do) that is suitable for a computer consulting practice. I need to be able to handle the typical basic things done by QuickBooks, like invoicing and estimates, simple A/R and A/P reports, etc. But that isn't enough. I need to manage multiple bill rates on a per consultant/per customer/per job or work order basis. QuickBooks doesn't do that, and I've tried hard to find out how to make that work. Any advice, hive mind?

Looking for a little advise as to how to handle information or some ideas of a decent, and cheap (maybe free) software allowing me to track information gathered when doing accounts receivable or collection calls (NO I am not that person calling people around dinner time to ask why they have not paid the cable bill). Our customers are all corporations and are good about paying just some are a bit slower than we would like so we call to check on the status of payments. We currently use QuickBooks to do our invoicing and the method that I am currently using is to pull an aging report, pull the older invoices up and then type notes in the notes field of that invoice which I feel is not all that efficient of a method. Any advise or help that you can provide is appreciated.

Is there a “standardized” chart of accounts setup that is widely used among machine shops/small manufacturers (USA)? Working with other industries in the past (veterinary and restaurants), I have found that many choose to use a standard industry-specific chart of accounts – often established by a national industry association, etc. I have googled, etc. but have not found anything worthwhile for machine shops/small manufacturers... Any accountants or shop owners out there?

I run a tiny record label. So far we have one release under our belt and book keeping has been relatively easy as far as keeping track of what outlets we sell the cd too, and keeping track of collections and what not...We have three releases planned for the upcoming months, and this is gonna throw a wrench into our book keeping.. I could very well, just adopt the same policy for every release as I do for our first one, but it seems like a lot more work then needs to be done.. I keep a simple ledger for each account with how may cd's they took in, what they ow, and when a check comes in subtract the payment from the existing balance. NOw with some vendors having two or three of our releases, and checks coming in for more then one of our releases, Im gonna need a better way to keep track of ... (more inside) [more inside]

I'm new to the consulting world AND my mind has erased anything practical it might have learned in college accounting courses. My client is really slow to pay me, and I want to start charging them interest for overdue balances. My google-foo is failing, I can't seem to find any bookkeeping tutorials that tell me how to calculate this (daily? weekly? how much?), or even how to format/word it on my invoices. Can anyone either tell me how to do this, or direct me to an appropriate web resource?

Does anyone know of a program for Windows 2000/XP that will bring several different types of document files and image files together into one interface? This application should be able to reorder and renumber the pages accordingly. Also the tool must be able to export the end product into a universal format such as PDF or Word.
