What does the phrase "accounting logic" mean, particularly as used in the new book Monoculture?

I'm reading the book Monoculture by FS Michaels, which describes how what the author calls "the economic story," which she sees as dominant in our culture and as having replaced earlier dominant stories rooted in religion and science, is shaping people's work, communities, education, and relationships. In the book, Michaels talks about how "as the economic story spreads to government, a language based on economics develops along with a new way of thinking and reasoning about what goes on in government -- a kind of accounting logic. That accounting logic makes two assumptions: first, that anything and everything your government does can be assessed in terms of what value is added, and second, that the value added can be linked to how much money is spent on the activity in the first place." Etc. My question is: in this context, what does the phrase "accounting logic" mean? [more inside]

Just beginning my journey into the wonderful world of accountancy, and I'm lost already.

Hello everyone! Once again I am turning to AskMeFi for advice. The gist of it is: I'm a recent UK-based graduate in a non-finance discipline, and decided to make the move into finance and accounting. So far I have completed the three foundation modules of ACCA International, and am about to start studying for the upcoming F4 exam... and I've started to look for relevant jobs. Of course, the problem is experience (lack of). I've never had a direct finance job, and most positions (including entry-level ones [don't get me wrong; I know it's a long road and I'm barely at the start!]) seem to demand at least 2 years' experience. So, what to do? [more inside]

I never took accounting 101 please help!

Basic accounting text? I'm an attorney and recently a lot of my job involves ferreting out a defendant's financials, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. I've never taken accounting and my knowledge is very limited. I'd like to get some kind of basic accounting text (or other source) to just kind of help me better understand what I'm looking at and also ask informed questions of CFOs and accountants and the like. I work in a very small firm, so we (and our clients) don't really have money for expensive experts and I've got to do a lot of this leg work on my own. Thanks for your help. I'm looking for something that just explains the basics of balance sheets, cash flow statements, and financials etc.

Working on a fictional story about campaign finance reform. I need holes shot in the governing premises.
