Renting a dorm room in Burlington, Vermont

Hi, MeFi's collective oracle.

I was wondering if anyone out there has ever successfully rented as vacation accommodations a dorm room from either UVM, Burlington College or Goddard College in Burlington, Vermont. I'm planning a Memorial-Day getaway there and, because my needs are few, I figured that staying in a dorm room might be the most cost-effective option.

Any tips, tricks or other insights would be gratefully received!

Banff in May?

I'm thinking about taking my wife to Banff, Alberta for our tenth anniversary near the beginning of May. Help me with some ideas.

What's the weather usually like at the beginning of May? We're not skiers, so the snow conditions aren't relevant.

More importantly, I'm also looking for recommendations on places to stay. We like cozy smaller places, rather than big chain hotels. Something with ambiance, lots of wood and antiques. Cost is not too much of a concern, but I really don't want to spend $500/night just for a room. B&B recommendations are also welcome if you know of a great one.

Lastly, what are the Do Not Miss things to do. I am planning to do the gondola and the hot springs, but what else is unique to Banff that I simply cannot miss?

Vacation group accomodations in Grand Junction/Glenwood Springs CO

Hotel/House rental ideas for 8-10 guys in Grand Junction and/or Glenwood Springs CO area? I've got an annual trip coming up in September with 10-12 guys for 3-4 days. This year we are heading to the Grand Junction/Glenwood Springs area of Colorado.

Outside of major chain hotels, can anyone give recommendations for places to stay? Proximity to food and beer...er I mean, beer and food, are a big plus. We'll probably be hanging out, playing poker, etc. so suites are preferable to hotel rooms. Kitchen facilities also a plus.

I think the tentative plan is that we will be in Grand Junction area for a couple of nights, Glenwood Springs for one.

This is year 3 of this question. Year 1 yielded perfect advice for Portland, where we stayed (and loved) at the Northrup Inn. Year 2 not so much for Santa Fe, where we found a rental house through other means.

Anniversary in Ensenada

Where should I take my partner for our anniversary in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico?

We're looking at the two-night packages at Las Rosas, but would like suggested alternatives, preferably smaller and more intimate. Also looking for good spa and massage recommendations. If San Felipe is waaay better, please let me know. I researched it online and it looks like a marina and golf courses for American weekenders, which is sort of what we want to avoid.

Oh, we're also interested in a day hike, maybe inland in the mountains.

Where to stay in Barcelona?

Pair of mid-20s friends looking for a place to stay in Barcelona in early June. I've read up a bit on the neighborhoods and it sounds like the popular, touristy area is near Las Ramblas. However, many of the modern tourist attractions are farther to the northeast. Help! I'm having trouble nailing down a neighborhood to find a hotel to stay. I love being in an urban neighborhood that's great for walking around day and night, cheap eats, and great shops. Since this will be our first time to Barcelona, we'll likely be heading to the big tourist spots as well which seem to be northeast of the old town center. So far I've picked out Hotel Del Mar just north of Las Ramblas but near a good metro station. What do you think? Should I go closer to the center or farther? Any suggested hotels for 6/1-6/6? Budget max is $200/night for the 5 nights.

HELP need cool texas getaway for fishing

I want to plan a trip for my bf's birthday. I live in TEXAS and want to find a cool cabin that sleeps at least 6 people with access to fishing. I would prefer a secluded area where he and his standoutish tattooed buddies can be noisy and not have to deal with neighbors or uptight rednecks.. I have seen some cool places in Lake Buchanan and near Lake Travis, I just want to find the perfect one, with cool atmosphere, access to the water and affordable. I would like to spend less than 250 per night (other guests not included). I know he likes to fish in Rockport but the cottages all look kind of dingy...any ideas...I'll take whatever you got.

Hotel/House rental ideas for 8-10 guys in Santa Fe or between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I've got an annual trip coming up in June with 8-10 guys for 3-4 days. This year we are heading to the Santa Fe area of New Mexico.

Outside of major chain hotels, can anyone give recommendations for places to stay? Proximity to food and beer...er I mean, beer and food, are a big plus. We'll probably be hanging out, playing poker, etc. so suites are preferable to hotel rooms. Kitchen facilities also a plus.

Last year I posted a similar question for this same trip, that time going to Portland, OR. Great success-- we ended up staying at Northrup Inn, as suggested in the thread, and it was great.

Where can the Eurotrash lay their weary heads in Cinque Terre? My wife and I, along with at least two other friends, are heading to Italy in April. We plan to spend some time in Cinque Terre, and are wondering if the Hive Mind has any lodging recommendations based upon past experience or insider information. We'd like an apartment to help split costs, but we're open to any suggestions.

I've checked the other Italy/Cinque Terre threads, but the accommodation answers deal more specifically with Rome.

Blame Babel Fish for any headline faux pas. :-)
Where do I sleep?

How can I do a roadtrip on the cheap? I'm planning to go on a 1 month long roadtrip sometime soon. The problem is, I dont have one of those fancy vans. All I've got is a 4 door car. Over a month of travel, accomodations turn out to be the most expensive expenditure. Even if we stay in hostels ($20/night minimum) it works out to about $600 over the course of the trip. I've though of camping, but that's kind of nasty - no showers for a couple of days and then driving for 10 hours.. Is there something obvious I'm forgetting or am I just gonna have to bite the bullet?

Amsterdam 2007

I just found out I won a scholarship for a month-long research trip to Amsterdam (yay me). I'm planning to go in January or February 2007 and need help with 2 things:

1- Cheap, central, decent accomadations. My wife will be going with, so we need a private room and bathroom. A private room in a hostel would be fine. A private house would be better. I'm aware of craigslist amsterdam, but wonder if their are other resources/networks I could tap.

2- I know I don't have time to actually learn the language, but would like to pick up the basic getting around, ordering food stuff, and do not have the time or money to take formal classes. What good internet resources could help me learn basic dutch?

Portland Oregon group accomodations

What are good options for a group of guys to vacation in Portland Oregon for 3-4 days? I'm going to Portland late this summer and meeting a bunch of guys (9) for 3-4 days.

Outside of major chain hotels, can anyone give recommendations for places to stay? Proximity to food and beer...er I mean, beer and food, are a big plus. We'll probably be hanging out, playing poker, etc. so suites are preferable to hotel rooms. Kitchen facilities also a plus.

This is an annual trip that goes to a different part of the country every year, and budget is not a primary concern. In past years we've rented vacation homes, but that seems like less of an option in a city Portland's size.

Affordable accompdations in Key West in May? Going sailing from Key West on the 13th of May, and need a shoreside place to stay on the 11th and 12th.
IndoorPoolFilter: Where can I splash about in the Northeast? I've had an icky month. I am in a middle of a llllooong layoff, where I am being kept until June 30th (and have to stay until then if I want my severance package), and the rest of my nine co-workers were let go last week. It sucks. There is nothing I would like more that to leave NYC for the weekend, and shack up in a hotel with a cheesy indoor pool and hot tub. This doesn't seem like it should be complicated, but since I don't have a destination in mind it's difficult to navigate the travel websites. My specifications: no more than a three hour drive from NYC, less than $200 a night, as uncrowded as possible. Not interested in touristy places, but a scenic drive or some local color would be nice. Not interested in gym/lap/spa pools. I want the fake-waterfall kidney-shaped variety. Any suggestions?

I need specific travel advice for a trip to Montreal: lodging, money, bars, parking.

I'm an American planning a trip to Montreal. I'll be there in the next few weeks, and I'm looking for some specific advice. Having never traveled to Canada, forgive me if some of these questions seem ignorant.

I'd like to stay in Montreal, get drunk and stoned and be able to get back to where I'm staying without driving (obviously). Where should I look to stay? Are there certain districts I should pay most attention to? Conversely, are there areas I should avoid?

How late are bars open? Do I need to change my money? I'll be by myself -- 24/male -- any good singles hot-spots?

How big is the city compared to, say, Boston V. NYC -- the two cities I'm most familier with. How much should I expect to spend on hotel/motel accomodations? What's parking like? Is there anything else I'm overlooking. And, finally, does anyone want to hang out?
