Solutions for 'renting' internet while in a remote location?

I will be renting a cabin in a remote area in the US (mountains outside of Asheville, NC) and need to have internet access from my laptop for one day. I looked at maps of coverage and it seems like only 1 local carrier has a nearby tower. What are my options? (more inside) [more inside]

my virtual desktop

I'm a low- to medium-grade computer techie. I've recently fallen in love with the remote desktop concept (I've been using TeamViewer). I have my main PC with all my data and the software I use, setup how I like it, and then remote into that from mobile devices, friend's computers, work computers, etc., even my laptop I now prefer to use as a portal into my main PC. USB Unplug / Replug Automation

I'm looking for a way to have a windows computer do the equivalent of unpluging and re plugging a usb modem. This system is accessed remotely via Logmein and it is connected to the internet by an external usb evdo modem. The system is located in a third world country and the connection is not reliable. When it goes down, unplugging/replugging sometimes does the trick. How can I make the computer do this on its own? [more inside]

Remote area internet access

Email and basic web-browsing solution using a server in the city, dialup terminal in the bush - is it possible? I have a friend who operates a business at two locations in a 3rd-world country: (1) a city-based business office in which he is able to get ordinary DSL-speed and relatively reliable internet access, and (2) a remote site in which he has unreliable dialup-speed internet access. His problem is that #2 does not cope well with photos, videos, or anything bigger than about 100K, all of which he frequently gets as email attachments. [more inside]

Cheapest/Best solution for remote file access?

I have a three person Mac OS X office where we need to have remote access to about 4GB of files. I have looked around extensively for a solution and so far have not found an acceptable one. We have tried to use Back to my Mac and Apple Remote Desktop but the other two users are not that technically adept and it seem too complicated for them. Out problem is further complicated by the fact that we sometimes access the same files, so we can have version problems as well. Back to my Mac has never worked period. Could I use Amazon S3 storage? And manage with Subversion or Git? Are there reasonable clients for Subversion and Git. Drobo with network card seem over the top and too costly. Having the files on the cloud would be a perfect solution, however a local solution that could be accessed from anywhere will work as well. To further complicate we are thinking of having one person access via PC.

I will be leaving an XP laptop at my friend's house to seed some torrents with Azureus on a fast (10mbps up/down) connection. XP SP2 and WebDav

i have some of my remote users in the office connect to our fileserver using webdav as a means to quickly (though admittadly not-securely) access and change documents, etc. it seems though, that since using windows xp SP2 it's been dirt slow. my user will click on a directory, and it will take no less than 10 seconds for the directory to be highlighted. that's not even attempting to open the directory - that'll take another two minutes or so. i'm trying to figure out what's exactly going on here. ideally i'll be switching to VPN soon, but in the meantime, i need to get this working properly again.

thanks!
