Grad school - advice for when the program is cancelled after acceptance

Asking for your ideas about what it'd be smart and reasonable to ask for from the program director if your chosen graduate school cancelled a program after sending out acceptances. I got word less than a month from when the program would have begun. There is the potential that this program would start two semesters from now. A phone conversation with their team confirmed that my acceptance would carry over, but I am not confident that this program will start on that timeline, and am applying to other programs, mostly for a fall start. Tisch School of the Arts Drama Acceptance Rate

Can anyone tell me what the acceptance rate for New York University's Tisch School of the Arts drama program is? If historical information is available, I'd be looking for it around 1991 -- if not, modern-day is fine. Knowledgeable word-of-mouth or educated guesses are fine if formal stats can't be officially found. I have already found NYU's university-wide acceptance rate, but that data's not useful for me in this case.

Have you cared for a dementia sufferer who hasn't accepted their illness?

This month the progress of my father's dementia came to a decision point, as his drivers license was suspended on Halloween. Getting him to give up driving has been fraught, as one might expect. I've been kicked out of his house twice now, but have ultimately managed to get him to stop driving. I don't blame him, as I know it's his illness, but I'm left wondering if I have to accept that he is incapable of cooperating at all in getting him the care he needs. [more inside]

Letting go of something on your bucket list?

What's a good way to 'give up' an item on your bucket list without feeling resentful? I don't mean giving up a life-long dream (like becoming a successful writer) or an impossible wish (like being an astronaut), I mean giving up something small like 'Before I die, I want to go to Paris for a few days' (my actual example is something else that's about the same level of effort as visiting Paris). Have you learned to really accept your partner? How?

I am with a wonderful man. We love each other and see a future together, and have a good relationship. However, I am a perfectionist about relationships and a depressive (in therapy, on meds, regularly meditating), and sometimes I react absolutely terribly to his imperfections. Yes, I'm working on it in therapy with a great therapist, but please help? [more inside]

How can I stop making myself miserable wishing things were different

I spend soul shredding hours focused on things I lack, like good looks and social grace. I'm aware that my only real choice is to focus on the life I have and to live it with the traits I possess. I'm PRETTY sure I'm gay. Help me be okay with it.

I've always known I was a little different. I have trouble remembering things from my relatively normal childhood, so it took until high school to connect the few dots I had, but after I did that, I relished in the attraction I felt for certain other men. It was exciting and made me feel as though I was part of a community with a common story. I grew up with conservative parents who I haven't been able to tell but who I suspect have an inkling, given the things they found left open on my teenage computer and my shy, sensitive nature. I was fine with not making it a part of my identity and limited its sphere of influence to my taste in porn and online friendships. I never felt the need for a relationship- with women or men- but I enjoyed the way validation from "manly" men made me feel both emotionally and physically. [more inside]

how did you learn to accept kindness and positive feedback with grace?

I have an awful reaction to being on the receiving end of compliments, gifts, and expressions of gratitude: visceral discomfort followed by impotent self-directed rage at having failed to insulate myself against any/all kindness. Ideally, I would love to be able to do things that other people consider to be nice without ever receiving any sort of thanks or even acknowledgment, but I know this is not a realistic goal. What are some concrete steps/resources I can use to learn how to change this overwrought bad attitude, and start meeting others' generosity, kindness, and gratitude with equanimity and grace rather than petulant rejection and destructive anger? How can I help my friend cope and accept her dogs death?

One of my best friends is having a really hard time with her dying canine. She has had this dog since I have know her (14 years) and since the dog was a puppy. She has had some tough times in the years I have known her, and this dog has been her constant companion and helped her power through those times when she struggled even to get out of bed in the morning. She is (rightfully) having a really hard time letting go, though at this point it is the right thing to do. [more inside]
