I've just applied for my first university tutoring position (English Literature) and just want to know a bit about what I can expect. Example: how much of the preparation/material is guided by the lecturer of the course you end up tutoring for?
Tutoring, like lecturing, seems to be one of those things that have no set route for getting into. While I'm sure the pay rate for tutoring on campus varies from one university (and probably, from one course) to another, is there an applicable standard rate to keep in mind? Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

CV help requested: I'm an academic who's currently looking for jobs both inside and outside of academia. My CV is currently in "academic form". This means 6 pages. How long should a CV be (tech jobs, UK)? What should I cut? What's the general consensus on "straplines" starting the CV?

Does anyone have experience using an ebook reader for academic papers (physics, bio-chem)? Since most articles are available only as high-resolution, multi-column PDFs my instinct is that a standard Kindle may be a no-go.

I'm in Spain and have been asked to give summer courses in English for academic purposes to university researchers and teachers of engineering. Apart from "English Academic Vocabulary in Use" (CUP), which I used last year - it's good - do any MeFites have any tried and tested recommendations for books and other materials that might be suitable? Amazon is great, but too often you can't get a feel for the book.

I am interested in academic librarianship. I am currently finishing my first year in an MLIS program. I already have my Master's Degree in computer science and am currently working as a computer programmer in an academic library in Southern California. I'm curious as to what the job market is like out there for academic librarians now. I know that many universities have experienced dramatic budget cuts recently and several (including ours) have instituted hiring freezes. I won't be graduating for another year or more but I'm curious as to what the climate is like out there now. Are there many openings? Also, given my programming background, what areas do you think it's best for me to focus on in my studies? What is going to make me hireable and look good on a resume?
