Summer work for an academic between assistantships

My funding for my current project ran out. I should be fine for the upcoming fall semester, when I will be finishing and defending my dissertation. However, the summer semester is unaccounted for. I have a part-time catering gig that I can get a little bit of money with, but I'm looking for ideas for other work. Details in the extended explanation. [more inside]

Online communities for academics

I occasionally have questions that come up with regards to PhD work that I don't necessarily feel comfortable asking in person to other people in my program or to my adviser. Recently I've found myself wishing for an online community of other academics so I could get advice and share information in a pseudonymous environment. Are there any well known communities that fit this description out there?

How to: Have a good summer vacation

I'm in academia and during summer my workload goes down quite a bit. I'm earning enough money through a part-time appointment and a grant stipend so that I don't necessarily need to work extra to make ends meet, and as such I anticipate having a great deal of free time. I have a few projects lined up with deadlines far in the future, and I'm looking for advice on ways to structure having a lot of free time without wasting it getting stuck in a social media / video game k-hole. What was academia like before different IT revolutions?

I've been working on putting together an annotated bibliography for my adviser over the past few days. I'm struck by how much work it is in terms of finding all of the articles, saving them, and then tracking backwards and forwards through citations to find related material. However as I've been doing this (and, in fact, each time I do any sort of review of the literature) I wonder what life was like before you had giant relational databases of material, not even counting things like writing up the report on a type writer. So, my question: if you've been in academia for a while, then what was life like before word processors / large relational databases of literature / instant collaboration and communication through email? And what sort of changes have you seen with the job as technology has advanced?

Citation Question

As I'm writing a literature review I'm reading another review paper (Paper A) and found a citation to a source (Paper B) that makes a point I want to incorporate in to my own work. I've tracked down that source (Paper B) and agree with the way it was paraphrased in Paper A. How do I ethically and accurately cite this in my own work using APA? [more inside]

Good idea? Huge mistake?

I've been accepted to a PHD program at the University of Maryland's iSchool, and will likely be researching social media and social gaming for my dissertation. I'm excited, love the program, and can't wait to start publishing work as part of the academic community, however recent discussion on Metafilter, and a smaller living stipend than I expected, have me second guessing what I thought was a great opportunity.
