Scary abdominal surgery that's still sort of optional.

I don't require surgery. Yet. Yet is the word that I keep thinking. I think I'm better off planning surgery now than needing it as an emergency, which is a possibility (but I don't know how likely). I have a 8 cm simple cyst just chilling between my ovaries. It was discovered in May due to a (probably) unrelated MRI. Following up with an ultrasound has shown that a) it doesn't appear to be attached to my ovaries, or anything else and b) it hasn't changed since May. Of course, I have no idea how long it's actually been there. My doctor doesn't think surgery is *required*, but is sort of recommending it. I'm scared. I don't know how to plan for this, or what questions to ask. [more inside]

Is this abdominal pain something I need to go to the hospital for?

I'm experiencing abdominal pain, and would like a non-medical sounding board for how serious it sounds, and whether it's hospital worthy (given my almost non-existent lack of health insurance). You are not my doctor, etc., etc., but I'd like some non-medical advice about whether what I'm experiencing is something serious, or something that I can just push through. I think I have a low pain tolerance threshold, and I'm not good at gauging relative pain strength while in pain, so I'd like some perspective. I don't know which details are important, so I'm including them all. [more inside]

Newfangled core exercise featured on CTV, Global or CBC?

Partner and I saw a segment on one of CTV, Global or CBC (national? maybe... we're in Calgary) in which an American professor of... kinesiology, or something like it, demonstrated what he said was the perfect core exercise. Desperately trying to track it down. [more inside]

If the ultrasound was normal, what else could this mass be?

I know you aren't my doctor, but I'm just frustrated and hoping for some ideas while I wait for a follow-up appointment. For the last two months, I've developed a tender mass on the left side of my abdomen, right underneath the ribs. I noticed it during my last period, it stopped hurting after a few days, and now it's come back again with my next period. [more inside]

You gotta be kidney.

AmateurMedicalOpinionsFilter: I've been experiencing mild to moderate pain in my mid-back (and occasionally my right-lower-quadrant abdominal area) for four days now. It feels a bit like a bad backache. I'm worried that this may be a kidney issue, although I have no significant medical history. [more inside]

abdominal aortic aneurysm

abdominal aortic aneurysm filter: My 53 year old mother-in-law was just rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with a 7cm abdominal aortic aneurysm. Apparently it was caught just before it was about to rupture. The doctors are currently trying to figure out best procedure to deal with this since some blood has been leaking into areas it wasnt supposed to. Anyways, my question is has anyone ever dealt with this? What should my expectations be? Survivability? After operation? Thanks.
