Some new neighbors just moved into the flat above us. How do I reduce the noise of their constant stomping? Would asking them nicely render a solution?
And more importantly, is there some stomping disorder in modern psychology that I should know about? Because their flat is the same size and layout as ours, which isn't that big at all (you can walk across the hall to the door in about 10 steps) and I am genuinely baffled at how much stomping can indeed be done in such a capacity.

I will be vacating my house for a few months over the winter. Aside from some house plants there will be nothing organic in the house to worry about. I was planning on turning the heat down to near 40.
The house is not particularly well insulated so, if we get a serious cold snap, which is entirely likely,I would like to be prepared. I was thinking of turning off the water from the basement so the pipes will be empty, therefore not freeze.
Is there any danger in this?
Have you any other suggestions?

I want to send to few people (myself included) few pages from a book of my choice, every working day, so we could for example, read complete "Catcher in a Rye" in a month or so.
Does anyone know some online service that I could use for such purpose? I found only "Chapter-a-day" services, but I want to use book of my choice.

I'm writing an article on the proliferation of student-run a cappella groups on college campuses. Unfortunately, quantity does not equal quality. There are several competitions which give awards to the best groups regionally and nationally. But does anyone have opinions on which are some of the worst a cappella groups in the U.S.?

My memory has infuriatingly mislaid the title and author of an unusually excellent (schlocky) long thriller I borrowed and gave back while on vacation recently. The book was by no means brand new. Chief climactic scene was a tunnel war under a mountain between vicious, separatist hillbillies in a southern "company" mining town and ex-Vietcong mercenaries. Author is a veteran writer - and the novel's protagonists - NY husband and wife lawyers with unusual kids - may have featured in a previous work of his. It's a perfectly satisfying read for a transatlantic flight when you can't take other "good" books for back-up due to hand luggage restrictions, which my long-suffering husband faces again in a fortnight. The title had nothing to do with the plot specifics above - it was a generic couple of words - like "justice" or similar. The author's name was pretty bland too. I can't believe I stupidly relied on my memory.

I'm curious what it would take to make and sell a bottle of booze commercially. A new tequila or vodka for instance. What would it take to have my own bottle for sale in Albertson's (etc...) nationwide. I know Sammy Hagar wanted his own tequila and now has it, and I know some guy started Skyy vodka. Now, Sammy is clearly a $$$$$-onaire, and for all I know, so was the Skyy guy before he started. Does it take a million bucks? Or can I start small for $10,000? What kind of barriers to entry are there? Legality issues? Initial production? Production scalability? Any info would be appreciated.

What is involved in running for a seat in the House? Right now there is an uncontested seat in my district, (AR-03) Arkansas, going to Boozman (R). He has a lot of financial backing and and a solid religious support base but he is also batshit insane. I am a 32 year old network/computer specialist that works for the university with no previous political experience, I am pretty good organizer and a fair public speaker and would do well on web activism. but I am not sure if this would even make a difference in a real congressional race as I have no $$$, if there was another candidate I would support them, but this guy is running unopposed so somebody should do something!

How did Kubrick film the psychedelic 'stargate' sequence of "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Some of the movie's special effects are obviously crude CGI (like the cockpit displays during spacecraft rendezvous) but the ending seems far more sophisticated. Regular old animation? Looks too... digital. Articles on 'the making of' I've seen never discuss this all-important visual (although it's cool knowing about the spinning set used for example in the jogging scene).
