Detective/Mystery Novels in Current Day New York?

A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]

Fellow New Yorkers! I don't think it's a roach...but what is it?

Just moved to New York City to a clean, small apartment. I've been here a month and in the past few days have found several, small, brown bugs. My first thought, roaches! But these guys are really, really slow and come out in the daylight a lot. I've had roaches before and you can't catch them with your hands, these guys I can just swoop down and snag. [more inside]

Cityson is graduating, and we'll all be hungry to celebrate.

Cityson is graduating from a Western NY University. He's done great, and we're all as proud as we can be. About 8 family members are making the overnight trip, and would like to have a nice dinner after traveling on Friday, the evening before the ceremony, which is on Saturday, May 17. We're all staying at the same hotel in Bath, NY and Cityson requested a family restaurant meal rather than splitting up the extended family, as only a graduate and parents may attend the University-sponsored pregraduation dinner. I don't want to leave my own elderly parents and aunt to fend for themselves for dinner, either. The problem is that we've not eaten out at a restaurant nicer than a diner the entire time he's been a student, and have no idea where to go. [more inside]

Silence a loud outdoor gate

My landlord just installed an alley gate between my building and another. It was in response to some attempted break-ins from the back of the walkup. The problem is that when the door slams shut, it’s really loud and startling. On a Saturday, it slams shut very loudly around 20 or so times a day (not really an exaggeration). To me being the noise sensitive type, who gets a jolt of adrenalin each time it happens, this is a very bad addition to my already urban environs. [more inside]

Articles on structural inequality in NYC?

I would like to be pointed towards an article that connects how NYC's investment in corporate and banking interests directly worsened the prospects of the poor and working class in NYC during the Bloomberg years. This should be intelligent but not too dense -- something that could be easily readable by college freshmen without background in social science, written in a style such as you'd find in the New Yorker, Atlantic, NY Times Mag, etc in style and difficulty level. Thanks! Note: I **don't** need ethnographic stories focusing on people's lives, such as the Dasani article in the NY Times. (Those are great but I have plenty.) Rather I need a non-specialists' discussion of the structural connections between wealth and poverty in NYC, something explaining exactly why choices to invest in fancy buildings led to more homelessness -- for example, detailing how city money was diverted from x to y during these years.

Where can I find a pair of boots like these in NY?

Help! I live in Brooklyn and I need to have a pair of lace up boots like these or these on my feet by the end of the day. Where can I find some? Doesn't need to be this specific brand, just this type of lace-up boot that you see young women wearing everywhere. Even better if they're slightly beaten up. I'm willing to venture to Manhattan. Budget: must be less than 250.

How safe is Clinton Hill, Brooklyn?

I've been living in Brooklyn Heights for two years. It's expensive and kind of boring, but definitely very safe. I'm moving soon and found a place I love in Clinton Hill close to Pratt. I love the beautiful architecture and artsy vibe. I was ready to sign a year's lease but then I did a bit of googling and found out that Clinton Hill and Fort Greene were found to be the 6th most dangerous neighborhood in NYC. Is Clinton Hill really that dangerous? I am a 95 pound woman in my 20s, not super street smart, but familiar with the Subway and Brooklyn in general. Is moving to Clinton Hill a bad idea? Am I doomed to moving to Park Slope instead just to be safe? Will I be okay in Clinton Hill as long as I don't walk home alone at midnight - which I do in Brooklyn Heights now? Or conversely, is it on the dangerous level of not walking alone any time after dark?

How do I look for a job in NY without living there?

How is life in San Francisco different from life in New York City?

I'm a late 20's native New Yorker - grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for most of my life. I've lived in San Diego for the past year. Lovely place, but it's not for me. Got a job offer in San Francisco and I'm excited and ready to make the move. I've always loved my visits to San Francisco and its walkability, culture, food, shopping, and diversity have always made it comparable to New York in my mind. I love New York, but I don't want to move to San Francisco expecting it will be just like living in New York. I've already noticed some big differences that I embrace (and some I dislike.) People who have lived in both cities (especially as a young person): what are some of the differences you found between life in New York and life in San Francisco? Thanks!

Restorative Justice in NYC

I help run an arts organization in NYC, and recently, it was brought to our attention that a person's behavior has made some of our other community members feel unsafe. The person has agreed to stay away from our organization and its events until invited back, and seems genuinely repentant. I'm looking for information about restorative justice - either resources on how it works, what standard practices are, and also (ideally) any organizations in the NYC area that could help us understand and navigate this situation. Please understand I can't provide any more details than this, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.

Comfortable shoes for NYC businessman edition.

I just trudged 3/4 of a mile down 42nd street. My fancy black dress shoes (Allen Edmonds) are NOT cut out for this. My pinky toes have been replaced by blisters. What are the most comfortable shoes I can wear to work? I work in the financial industry but the dress code is business casual: slacks, button down shirt, maybe jacket or tie, rarely a full suit. Both black and brown shoes are needed, men's size 12. Must withstand walking in NYC.

How do I find a MAPP class in NYC?

My spouse and I want to be foster parents in New York City. The whole system is exasperatingly decentralized, but we've gone to two orientations, filled out reams upon reams of paperwork, gotten physicals, put down 28 years of address history on our SCR forms. Now we need to take a MAPP training. The catch is that the agency nearest us holds the training Monday and Thursday nights. I work Thursday nights, so that is out. I've been calling agencies trying to find an open MAPP class, to no avail so far. So I'm wondering if the MeFi hive mind has any insights on finding an open MAPP class in NYC. [more inside]

Am I insane to buy a mk1 Toyota MR2 if I live in NYC without a garage?

Writing spot in Lower Manhattan or upper Brooklyn

When I lived in Chicago, there was a great late-night coffee shop called New Wave Cafe in Logan Square that was perfect for after-work writing. I've been having a hard time finding a similar spot since moving to NYC. It doesn't need to be a coffee shop, but it does need to be well-lit enough that I can read, and calm enough that I won't be seen as preventing the establishment from doing business. Bonus points if the place has a neighborhood-y feel with a friendly staff. I live in Greenpoint, work in SoHo, and usually commute via bicycle over the Williamsburg Bridge. Any suggestions, Metafilter?
