I have an old hard drive that was password locked. I can't boot from it, but I can get to the files. I have to change permissions for every single file before I can copy it over, is there a way to do that for everything at once?

Windows XP. I can't get my Date/Time dialog to popup when clicking the clock, nor the video card/monitor properties to pop up (when right clicking desktop and choosing "properties"). I also have auto updates not being allowed to be turned on (or rather, the service is on, but in the control panel it says it can't be turned on). I think i got hit w/something a while back, but everything I've done to fix it isn't working.

I'm trying to copy some windows files to an external USB drive so I can wipe the disk. I am doing this under Ubuntu Jaunty because it won't stay up in XP due to malware (not even long enough to scan the drive, but I'm don't need to repair the system. I just want to get some files off it.)

XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated.

I'm an advanced computer user and would like to know how Windows 7 compares with XP Pro. I'm clinging to the latter like Dagon to an emaciated villager but I know the time will come when I'll have to move on.
Basic info about install size, resource hogging, software compatibility (particularly MS Office versions) and tweakability in terms of Windows' always annoying "security" functions will be greatly appreciated. I have tried Vista, only to run away from it screaming. I'll be sitting round the fire in the trashcan, looking forward to reading your thoughts.

I'm getting a Blue Screen of Death on startup (Windows XP Pro) which says that the "problem" (whatever it may be) is being caused by a file called klif.sys. Googling around indicates it's a Kaspersky file, and I do indeed have their anti-virus software installed on my system. But I haven't found any solutions, and I can't get past this BSOD. Is there any hope for me? (More details inside.)

I love Vista, hate the way it handles flash drives. Obi-Wan, Help Me!
I use a Vista laptop and an XP desktop for work. When I copy anything from the XP machine on my flash drive and use it on my Vista Laptop, it won't let me delete or re-save it after editing, saying the file is Read-Only.
Even if I copy something to it from the Vista machine it always asks to confirm things. I know UAC is a pain in the neck but is there anyway around it's behaviour on flashdrives?
