My XP system is severed from the internet and runs beautifully as a stand alone. It has never been as responsive as now. I still have nag screens that are looking for an anti-virus and firewall. How are they disabled? I used REVO Uninstaller and CCleaner to remove as much of the old internet crud as possible. What other internet features that are not listed in Add or Remove programs or Revo can be removed and how is it done?

I understand that Google Chrome plans to continue supporting the Windows XP operating system for another year. Does anyone know Firefox's position concerning this support issue? Thanks in advance.

My XP system is going off-line in April. It will stay in operation, running in tandem with a new W8.1 system, that will be its conduit onto the web. I need to keep XP running because some of my $$$$$ drafting software will not run on 8.1.
8.1 is also, IMHO, irritating.
Can my Dell T3400 workstation, 4 GB, be used as a music center with a sound card upgrade? I have tried the system, as it is configured, with Sennheiser TR220 headphones. The sound is horrible. The CD player in my truck sounds better.
Part of the sound problems are caused by background processes that interrupt the sound output. Clearing most of the Start Menu and everything concerned with internet operation should stop this part of the problem.
I am considering an ASUS Xonar Essence ST Headphone sound card.
Would this card in my XP system with the Sennheiser TR220 headphones be reasonably equivalent to a good stand alone sound system?
Might another card be better than the Asus?
I am avoiding a separate player due to limited space in my office.

I have an old laptop running XP. The laptop actually dates from the Vista era, but I chose to have XP installed given the lousy rep that Vista had. I have seen this question
. I have a newer laptop that I use for most of my word processing and internetting needs. I can retire the old laptop, but it still works so I'd rather not ditch it. Assuming I am not going to attempt to run XP on anything connected to the outside world, what can I do with this old laptop? [more inside]

I'm a late adaptor. After much happy gaming in Windows XP (via Boot Camp on my Mac), I am finally getting around to Vista-only games like Assassin's Creed III. So it's time to take the plunge and buy a copy of Vista on eBay. But which version? 64-bit or 32-bit? Service pack 1, 2, or 3? Starter, basic, or ultimate? Home or business? As somebody who isn't well-versed in Windows to begin with, I'm finding the choice a little overwhelming.
I will be using Windows exclusively for gaming and don't care about any other features. Also, note that Windows Vista is the latest Windows my 2006 Mac Pro will support, so unfortunately "Skip straight to Windows 7 or 8" isn't an option. [more inside]

VPN software on a Win 7 machine and an XP machine on my home network. The VPN connected Windows 7 machine reports good speeds at www.speedtest.net

I just created a fresh installation of Windows XP with updates and drivers on my parents' computer. How can I preserve this installation, so that they can easily
rollback (or even wipe the hard drive) to get back to this uncorrupted state after it is inevitably infected with some unremovable malware? The contents of the hard drive are under 4gb and can fit on a DVD. They don't store content locally, so I'm unconcerned with losing data.
And, no, switching to Linux is not an option. Thanks!

XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated. [more inside]
