Playlist Filter: Help me find some fight music?

I'm writing a sci-fi novel and I've come to an extended battle scene. Music without lyrics is a MAJOR plus (lyrics can distract me and slow down the writing... but music is good for blocking out noise from outside my study.) Any suggestions? Guitar-oriented hard rock music and VNV Nation-style modern sounds would really help! [more inside]

What Are Some Lethal But Surmountable Diseases?

I'm trying to write a fictional character background that involves someone overcoming a generally fatal disease in childhood, and leading to a full recovery. The character must grow up to be physically fit and able to engage in a very physical job, but I'm imagining endless visits to the hospital in childhood & nobody expecting him to live long. I have a few reasons to avoid cancer as a story choice. What are other possibilities?

If I Told You, Would They Have to Kill Me, You, or Both of Us?

If a civilian in the US (who does not work for the gov't) learns top secret national security information through no active choice of her own (not snooping, stuff just happens in front of her or she is clearly dragged into the matter against her will), can the government legally compel her to keep said secret? How do I check my feminism as a writer?

Are there other simple-to-express checks like the Bechdel Test for measuring gender bias and feminism in fiction? I try hard to make sure I'm being a decent feminist as a writer -- I'm a guy, I tend to write with male protagonists but with a lot of female characters involved, and I worry about my blind spots. You don't need permission to dress up as a copyrighted character, but do you need permission to write about it?

My novel involves a costume party with some guests dressed as recognizable characters from films, TV, etc. I'm clearly not trying to claim them as my own and it's just all Halloween costumes, but am I asking to get sued? [more inside]

Do you think James Bond has any real friends?

Do you have a friend who seems to have it all -- financial stability, always the center of attention, people jumping into bed with them at the drop of a hat, to the point that it seems just plain unfair? Do you get jealous? If so, how do you maintain the friendship? If not, why do you think you don't feel any jealousy? (Particularly interested in answers from the early-twenties age range.) This time, does it really have to be personal?

What examples are there of hero stories (books, movies, etc) wherein the hero and villain don't come into contact until the climax? [more inside]

Will Kindle Demons Eat My Baby?

I want to self-publish my urban fantasy novel, but I'm worried about shooting myself in the foot with a number of decisions. [more inside]
