Journalist changing careers.

I have, for the past several years, worked as a journalist in a fairly niche area. I do not want to do this anymore - but I do want to put my skills to good use, and make a decent living. How do I do this? What now? [more inside]

Jobs Like Journalism, Minus the Writing

I've been working in either journalism or communications for a few years now and while I like it a lot, I feel like I still haven't quite found the right job. What are some career trajectories for someone who is really good at research, loves talking to people, and has an overwhelming sense of curiosity, but is tired of writing everyday. [more inside]

Help me level up as a writer

I am a 32 y/o creative writer (poetry, short fiction, essays) and arts journalist. I have an MFA and I have been very well-published in lit mags and on websites (but no book yet). I have two poetry manuscripts that I’ve circulated, and both have had some near-misses. I am very prolific and always have projects going, and I submit often. However, I feel a lack of professional traction, and I am hoping some of you have ways I can level up. [more inside]

LinkedIn equivalent for creative freelancers?

I work in freelance newspaper/online journalism currently, but came into it through a sort of backdoor (via a career in corporate communications rather than via j-school). I now find myself in the situation of having regular work for clients that I absolutely love. Unfortunately, that work only comes out to about 20 or 25 hours a week and it would be fantastic if I could double my workload. [more inside]

This is a question for the experienced journalists of MeFi.

I'm a freelance journalist who is mostly self-taught. I didn't go to j-school and I've never worked on staff at a newspaper or magazine. While I'm confident in my research and writing skills (at least I know where I need to improve) there are a few "rules" of journalism that I feel like everyone else knows and I have never learned. Hence this question. [more inside]

Long Form Music Journalism

Link me to riveting, long form music journalism online! I want to read case histories of musicians with troubled lives, like these articles about Elliot Smith and Ben Todd. Or maybe a peek at a subculture I barely knew existed, like Kid Rock's Cruise or Nathan Rabin's many recaps of The Gathering. I'll also accept a straight-ahead profile, as long as it's as well written as Elizabeth Gilbert's piece on Hank-3. [more inside]

Writing an "as told by" article, should I divide my compensation?

Asking for a friend. Friend interviewing a source for an article and wanted to publish it as an interview. He pitched it to a paper and the paper wants him to right a story in the form of "as told by." So the article reads like a narrative by the source but is written by my friend. He has never written anything like this before and wonders whether or not he should pay some of what he's paid for the article to the source?

Examples of essay/articles without a character or main person

Hello, I'm looking for examples of good essays/articles/long form journalism (2000-5000 words) that aren't told through profiling a person or based on the author's experience somewhere. I received advice that you don't pitch an idea or a subject, but a character, and I've stuck to that, but I'd like to try a few shorter articles and essays that don't depend on framing it around a person or a trip somewhere (my essays that hang off a person's story take over a year to get the material because I follow the person's journey). I hope that makes sense.

Resources on how to write (satirical) newspaper articles?

I've been writing satirical news articles for a website I created, and while my articles have been popular so far, I realized that I've been writing solely on my instinct of how a newspaper article would sound. What are some resources that go more in-depth on the style of newspaper articles, rather than the news gathering/reporting side of journalism?

pulitzer drafts

Years ago Jack Hart, the esteemed editor and writing coach at The Oregonian, posted the rough drafts of Tom Hallman's Pulitzer winning story The Boy Behind the Mask somewhere online. Perhaps to a writers'/journalists' forum or mailing list. One editor's reaction to seeing the progression of the story through the drafts was to call it the most instructive lesson he'd ever had in newspaper writing. Help me track down those drafts!

Translating WriteNow Mac files

How can I translate thousands of files written in an old Macintosh word processing program called WriteNow, into a format that is easily accessible, probably Microsoft Word or RTF? It's a problem. I'm a writer and I used WriteNow exclusively for about 15 years. Now it is unsupported and an orphan. A translator program I used to use, MacLink Plus, no longer works on the current Lion operation system for Macintosh. Here's a link that describes WriteNow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WriteNow
