World of Warcraft on UMPC?

Does anyone have experience playing World of Warcraft on an ultra mobile PC like the Samsung Q1, OQO or Sony Vaio UX series? I know it's technically possible to run by watching the demos on YouTube but I'd like to get some feedback about whether it's actually a playable experience long term or more of a novelty. The Sony device seems to have been discontinued so if you have other recommendations for an ultra mobile form factor I'm all ears. More importantly if you've actually tried playing WoW in a mobile environment what are the major issues to watch out for in terms of these UMPCs?

My druid had a backstory

What's the best massively multiplayer role-playing game for actual role-playing? I almost succumbed and installed World of Warcraft again last night after a couple of years WoW-free, when I realized that if I'm going to descend into the depths of an MMO again, I might as well try something new.

Looking back on the things I enjoyed about WoW, it was all about creative player interactions; story circles on Thunder Bluff, clever banter with passing strangers, handing out gold to good role-players in newbie areas. I liked actually playing my characters as characters, and finding others who'd play along.

What's the best game for that sort of interaction? Are there games out there that have active communities that do role-playing, or is it all like in WoW, where even on role-playing servers finding someone who was RPing was rare?

(I realize that my best bet might still be WoW, in which case... how do you find good role-playing players?)

I haz WoW - whut neckst?

A friend really wants me to get into World of Warcraft with him. My wife has graciously agreed. I know little to none about the game, never played an MMO before (RPG, yes, MMO, no). My friend plays Hoard characters. As a rank amateur, what do I need to know? Give me the works...

Help me find some WoW bedding for my boyfriend.

Attention WoW users! I'm trying to find a World of Warcraft blanket or pillow for my boyfriend's upcoming birthday, does anything like this exist? My google-fu is weak. Secondary question: If they don't make these, do you have an recommendations for those websites that will custom make pillow cases and whatnot? I'd like something quality and comfortable, not those cheap looking and feeling homemade pillows you see.

Tertiary question: Any other gift suggestions for a WoW obsessed boyfriend? He's already preordered the new one coming out, and I don't play myself, so I'm kind of at a loss here. T-shirts aren't possible, as he would wear them in public with me (my enabling only goes so far).

How do I save a script/content rich web page as a local file?

What is the best way to save a script/content rich web page for archival reasons from a remote server, locally? I would like to save my World of Warcraft Armory Page as a local file, for archival reasons. Is there a way to do this that would preserve all the mouse-over's and in general be a complete recreation of the content available? If so, what is the best way to do this? Is there a way to do it without locking it into a particular web browser or viewing program?

More on the reasons why:
Whenever a new item in the game is found, the armory web site is updated. A history of changes isn't reflected on the web site.

What I've tried:
All of the "Save Page As..." options in Firefox 3.0.3.

World of Warcraft: Want to BUY the most bad ass account possible!

Yes I know it is totally lame to buy a WOW account. Don't Care. I want to buy the most bad ass World of Warcraft character possible. Its a present to myself for finishing a 10 year long project. Anyway, how do I go about doing this, how do I evaluate the bad ass-ness of the account? I'm willing to spend thousands of dollars.

Yes yes yes, I know it is lame. Whatever. WOW looks pretty cool and I'd like to get into it no matter how lame.

Make WoW work on my external monitor, please.

Why does World of Warcraft shut off my mirrored external monitor? Just spent several hours downloading my free trial of WoW and as soon as I launch the game, it shuts off my external monitor and switches to my laptop's monitor (which is broken, hence the external).
Is there any way for me to get around this problem? I'm using a Powerbook G4 with OS X 10.4. I've found a few things online that say I can shut my computer and then play on the external but I do not have an external keyboard so that's not really a viable option. Any suggestions?

Looking for source of an explanation why Second Life gets a lot of press

Second Life attractive to media people, hence the preponderance of media coverage compared to World of Warcraft I now cannot find a personal blog post (possibly by a female writer). It made the point that Second Life gets a lot of media attention because, inside that domain, one may set up static and definable objects that are the result of creativity, sort of like a newspaper article or a segment on a nightly newscast. By contrast, World of Warcraft is an amorphous, open-ended game (another important distinction) that can’t be nailed down easily and does not relate directly to the work product of journalists.

I thought I read this via a link at Valleywag, but a really extensive search there, including trying out many links and asking Denton if he remembered it, has resulted in nothing. So has very well targeted Googling. I can more or less restate the theme of the original post, but I would like to be able to cite it properly.

Does this ring a bell with anybody?

How to get time with dad back from WoW?

What should I do about my dad's WoW addiction? Ever since my little brother showed my dad World of Warcraft, he hasn't stopped playing. This is to the exclusion of almost all time with my brother and I. I've got root access to the router, but I think simply blocking the ports is a bit harsh. Everyone in my family agrees that he plays WoW too much. What should I do?

Santa plays the Horde!?

In order to illustrate a part of a loooong blog post I'm finishing about World of Warcraft, I'm looking for a small, one panel comic that features Santa Claus raising his fist and, to his apparent disbelief, yelling "For the Horde!" to Rudolph. For the life of me I can't find it. Could any of you hope me on the matter? An Alliance counterpart would be fine too - doesn't have to be santa, just to be funny.

Additionnatlly, I'm open to any funny and/or representative illustration/video about WoW. I'm using a few videos already: Office Space commercial, "Live to win" section of the South Park episode, and the "Gay Bar" video from the Pretty Pink Ponies guild. I won't be putting the "Warcraft is for porn" video, 'cos my post is all written in French.

In short, I don't need much else than the Hordy Santa, but if you know of something truly good, please don't hesitate!

So, how would one go about selling a World of Warcraft account? After a couple of years I just can't bring myself to play anymore.
Casual player looking for WoW guild recommendations

Can anyone recommend a World of Warcraft guild that meets my specifications? Follow the bolds for the abridged version :)

First off, I know there's a MeFi guild in existence--used to run its earlier incarnation--but right now it seems like it's moved Horde-side and I'm looking for an Alliance guild. Plus the MeFi guild never stays very large and I'd like there to be people on most of the time - I miss EarBucket and the rest a lot, but it kinda stinks when half the time you're alone in guildchat.

I'm with a good group of people right now, but on a very young server (Vashj) and recently came to the realization that the auction house is piss-poor, and it's making it hard to level since my gear is lagging at 10+ levels behind my own. So I'm thinking of rerolling on a medium (or high) population server where there are plenty of things to buy on the AH.

Making matters worse is that I don't raid and most guilds are all about the endgame - I'm hoping for a group of people more interested in leveling, PvPing, playing alts, and just having fun than in phat lewt. Not that raiding is a bad thing, but I just don't see the point of being in a guild where <5 % of the population is below level 60. and this should go without saying, but there's millions of medium/large guilds medium/high pop servers which aren't all about raiding...but they don't all have b>cool, laid back, intelligent people. Since most MeFites fit this description, I'm hoping some of you have found similar groups of people to hang out with.

If possible I prefer RP or RP-PVP servers, since it usually means about 5% less idiocy from the pubbies, but that's definitely not a requirement at this point. Ditto for my timezone - EST is nice but not necessary.

And I could just suck it up and try to deal with the situation on my current server - for example, I could run lots of instances to get gear drops - but for now let's assume I don't want to.</5>

Help a Canadian MeFite in Paris play The Burning Crusade (Expansion to World of Warcraft)?

Help a Canadian MeFite in Paris play The Burning Crusade (Expansion to World of Warcraft)? Gang, here's the skinny: I'm travelling in Europe (Paris this week) with my Macbook, and I have WoW already installed. It's the North American version, since I'm from Canada. Back home in Canada a friend of mine has purchased a North American version of Burning Crusade for me, so I have a CD-Key to use. I want to continue playing on North American servers. (Otherwise I'd just buy EU versions of WoW and BC and start a new account.)

I'm downloading (via BitTorrent) a North American copy of BC, but the torrents I've found for that version aren't performing that well, and it could be days before I have the whole thing.

So far my on-line research seems to suggest that upgrading a US copy of Wow with an EU copy of BC isn't possible, but I don't have a definite answer on that yet. I know that it's no longer possible to play on EU realms with a US copy of WoW, so perhaps Blizzard has comprehensively separated the regions.

So, can anyone think of anything for me? US copies of BC that may be in Paris somehow, somewhere? A tourist-friendly 'net cafe that has anticipated my need? A trick for installing EU BC over US WoW? A faster/better torrent to download?

Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My fiance is going a bit mad not being able to play, and the taunting text messages from her guild-mates aren't helping. =)

Why would a mage turn to the right?

WoWFilter: Help me win a friendly bet involving World of Warcraft macintosh bugs, screen layout, and character positioning. Yep, lots A friend of mine in my World of Warcraft guild posted this screenshot of his new modded UI:

http://www.paucielecti.com/uploads/img456d2a186b701.jpg

And challenged us to the following mystery:

Notice everything that covers my screen is on the right? That's because when I fight I turn my left side slightly toward my target.
25g to the first person that can correctly post why I do this. And yes, there IS a reason.

Hints:

1) It's not about how my toon looks/animates from that angle.
2) It's not because of anything related to UI visuals.
3) It's something related to WoW, not anything personal/RL.
4) It's because of a bug that used to be in the game, but has been fixed.
5) It's because of what type of computer I used when I started playing.

I know oodles and oodles about the game, but this has me totally perplexed. My google-fu has failed me.

It could be due to some client/server bug that misread the orientation of the character. I also knew that mages suffered from bugs involving their Blink spell when facing certain directions or certain landscape features (like uphill and downhill). But I'm unsure as to any specifics beyond this.

How can I make dosh in WoW?

Auction House speculation in World of Warcraft. Since I started saving for my mount I've found that more gold can be made by purchasing and re-selling items on the AH than by repeatedly farming instances. I've only found a few items that are really worth looking for, like swifthistle, or perfect deviate scales. It's been slow but quite rewarding.

What other items should I be looking for? I'm playing Horde - are there any items I can sell at the neutral AH for dizzying profits? Does anyone have any gold-making secrets?
Recording Warcraft chat?

Researching World of Warcraft: I'm a graduate student studying online communication and social organization. I'm very interested in analyzing the chat interactions that happen in WoW. So far as I can tell, however, there's no way to save a transcript of the chat window. Is there any way to capture these interactions? It gets a little more complicated, of course. I'm running WoW on a Mac with OS X. I imagine most players are running the game under Windows. As I can't afford an intel based Mac, a cross platform solution would be ideal. Ultimately, I want to capture my chat as well as those of friends/guild members who might be willing to help me out be recording their communications. Thanks!

I need a DKP tracker!

I'm helping to administer a World of Warcraft guild and I need a recommendation for a DKP tracker that has some specific requirements. (Quick explanation: DKP is a system of rewarding points to people who participate in large events in a MMORPG. Those people can then use those points to purchase the stuff that comes from those events.)

My guild recently went through a transition from large raiding guild to small raiding guild. We have a starting pool of DKP that the current members of the guild earned before the transition. We're setting up a partnership with several other guilds, and we need to track separate DKP.

There are going to be two pools. One will be DKP earned and used with just the guild. The other will be DKP earned and used during events with the partner guilds. I want one system to track both pools.

Help me in my nerdy endeavor!

OS X, dual monitors: Game in fullscreen, secondary display untouched?

Is there any way, on an Intel iMac with two displays, to make apps like World of Warcraft or Unreal Tournament leave the secondary display alone? I like to take the occasional game break during the day, but I also like to keep one eye on IM during those sessions. With both the games mentioned, unless I run them in windowed mode, the secondary display, where I keep iChat and my inbox showing, goes blank. Is there any way to change this? Both have a windowed mode, but that causes some oddness with the mouse and it seems to hurt their performance a little.

It's not a 'World of Warcraft' per-se, but more of a 'Township of Warcraft'

Any idea as to the retention rates of users in online games such as World of Warcraft? After reading the new Wired, I just started learning about virtual property where you can sell the goods and stuff you earn playing games like World of Warcraft and Everquest. I'm not a gamer, but I find the idea really interesting and may be signing up myself soon...

However, after thinking about it, I was concerned that if you don't pay for a month, or if you get kicked out of the game, that would be akin to giving away a stack of money, somewhat like closing a credit card and losing your air miles in a way. So, I was trying to figure out: in the bigger online games - Everquest, WoW, Second Life, There, whatever other big ones are out there - how many people stay on as users month after month, and keep playing? I've found a bit of info on population as a whole for a few games via Wikipedia (see WoW's), but I have no idea as to how many people play most of them month after month, where to find out what percentage stay month after month, what percentage pack up and leave, and how many new gamers come... Any clues? Hope me, AskMeFi gamers!

WTF, Comcast?

Does Comcast hate World of Warcraft? Frequently (like maybe three quarters of the time) when I sign on to World of Warcraft, my Internet connection suddenly dies and I'm disconnected from World of Warcraft and AOL Instant Messager. Internet's back within a minute but it's a real pain because of login times and "That character is already logged in" errors that happen if you try and login just after getting disconnected.

Anyone else have this problem? More important, anyone know what the hell is going on?

Advice on choosing new wifi card for my PC.

I need help selecting a new wireless card for my PC [more inside, obviously] I'm downstairs and the router and modem are upstairs. Right now I have an older D-Link card (with antennae), but D-Link hasn't updated the drivers since mid 2003. My primary issue is with World of Warcraft, which hasn't been running properly (my computer blue screens immediately upon entering the game with one character). I've done troubleshooting on a variety of issues (memory tests, etc.), and although my blue screen no longer contains information for some reason, I'm pretty sure my network card is to blame. I've read some reports on my card, and it appears that there's some issue with it BSODing when it gets "too much info" or something.

Anyway, long story short, I'm also having issues with a few other programs (such as when I have bit torrents open) that cause a BSOD with a network card driver error, so I'd like to purchase a new card. I'm probably about fifty feet from the router, but you have to go through a few walls to get there; my current card has an antennae to help alleviate any issues this may cause, so that might be taken into consideration. I've also seen some of the USB 2.0 wireless adapters but have no experience with them--does anyone know how well they operate? I'd like a newer card from a company still updating its drivers so I can hopefully avoid similar problems.

Any help is appreciated.
