I've always been fascinated by war, and recently I've been on one of those kicks that seems ephemeral at first but just won't go away. I am particularly fascinated by WWII. I want reading suggestions. [more inside]

Why did the allies permit West Germany sovereignty after World War II (admittedly only in 1955) rather than keeping control in their hands? Were they not at all suspicious of Germany after its role in the first two world wars?

Looking for the film of a trailer I saw a while back: A lesbian couple during World War II. Possibly artists, writers. They live together in a house in Germany. One (or both?) gets captured by the Nazis while stubbornly staying put in the house, instead of making a run for it. [more inside]

Help me find a new (I think) nonfiction book about Germany in World War II. All I know about it: It MAY have been recently mentioned in the NY Times (a search there failed) and one memorable scene. In the scene, a German pilot writes about flying over Normandy on D-Day, seeing the sheer mass of the Allied force, and knowing right then that the war was lost for his country. I know it's not much to go on, but can anyone help?
